I just winterized my X5, its a indmar 350. I changed the oil and used valvoline 5w-20 full synthetic although manufacture recommends regular 15w-40. Any advise should i change the oil again back to the 15w40 stuff. thx

The 5W-20 is nowhere close to the 15W-40, viscosity wise. Why would you use the completely wrong grade of oil? I'd change it.

I use the Rotella in both boats. Great oil, great price.

In automotive applications, I'm a believer in true, full-synthetic oil. (Amsoil, Mobil 1)

In a boat, where the oil is changed every 50hrs, I'm not sure it's worth the extra expense.

Rotella 15w-40 in my X9. :D

You know, the oil that you drain out doesn't have to be wasted. You can use it in your lawnmower, or give it to your neighbor to put in his Nautique. :D

its that time to change my oil for the first time in my fj. Trying to decide on Oil. weather i should go synthetic or regular. and what brand of oil. Any suggestions or anything as far as oil filters i should look out for? give me some info. thanks

Well, oil is a lot like wine. There are a lot of different brands, and all of them will get you/your engine lubricated. Some people/engines like different types, so it's hard to make a general statement. However, there are generally agreed quality indicators.

1. Get your wine from a glass bottle, and your oil from a plastic bottle. High quality wine doesn't come out of plastic bottles and certainly not a box, and high quality oil doesn't come out of cardboard cans or metal drums.
2. Size is important - high quality wines have standardized on a 750 ml bottle, not on a gallon jug. Same with oil - only buy the quart sized plastic bottles. Anything in a gallon jug is of suspect quality, and you don't even want to think about what comes out of a 55 gallon drum like the ez-lube places use.
3. Just like wine, price is an excellent secondary indication of quality if you don't have the time to educate yourself about the primary quality indicators. Higher priced wine is almost invariably better than lower priced wine; the same is true for oil. (By the way, the same is true for speaker wires for your home theatre.)
4. I'm sorry, I just can't continue this...but hopefully someone can.

I'll apologize in advance if your for real, Gwen, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Damn Frank, last time I saw you on the board, you were arguing with the boys in the storage/winterization thread about water and a damn plastic bucket to simulate condensation building in a plastic fuel tank... NICE TO SEE YA AGAIN BUDDY!:D

Anyways, before I even became a member, I called the dealer where I bought my boom from and talked to the tech, and he said 15w40 is where you want to be at, and that a popular brand is Shell's Rotella T. So I bought it, changed the oil with a delco filter, and everything was good to go. Now I've winterized and changed the oil & filter again. Seems to be a pretty popular brand on the board here as well. Majority has spoken;)
