I am considering synthetic oil for my 1990 PS190 (351 Indmar). Does anyone have advice on this? What weight should I use? 10W30 or 10W40 or something else?

Suggest reading this (http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=2708) thread, specifically Engine Nut's advice.

I've been advised against going with a 10 weight oil. The ideal oil is either 15w40 or 20w40. Engine temp and burnoff are better suited for marine engines with these oils.

Two oil changes ago I went with synthetic but am going to switch back, partially because I am not sure there are really any benefits; but also because now whenever I come off the trottle to idle, the oil pressure gauge fluctuates drastically between just about 0 to around 40. This may not be related to the oil or even be cause for concern, but it started immediately after putting in the synthetic and it is discomforting to see the indicated oil pressure that low.

If you are changing your oil on a regular interval I think that synthetic is a waste of money. Use Dino and use the extra change for gas.:twocents:

I agree with this comment... The only thing I use synthetic in any more is the Merkur, due to it being turbo'ed, and the excess heat it seems to generate under the hood..... That is where the synthetics truly shine is there resistance to breakdown due to heat... Personally our boats all have the biggest radiators in town, the lake......
