This may sound stupid to some but, can someone elaborate on what is exactly ment by drive by wire vs. conventional. looking for perfect pass and keep coming up with for DBW when I find used ones, Looking to put one on my 96 ps190, LT-1 w/ power slot.

DBW is a throttle controlled electronically vs a traditional throttle cable. A perfect pass for DBW will be something that plugs in vs a servo that moves the throttle manually I believe

Drive by wire --- meaning there is no physical throttle cable connecting your throttle handle to the engine. The throttle position is transfered electronically via wires. The newer boats and some cars have this.
Your older 96' would be the standard cable (Not DBW).

Drive by wire does not have a cable that runs from the throttle control to the motor. Instead it uses a solinoid at the motor and the throttle control sends signals via a wire. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe 2005 and newer boats use drive by wire.

2005 MCX and newer. The RTP engine in 05 was still cable. I think by 06 all boats/engines were dbw.

They still have their problems. Our dbw system somehow un-calibrated itself, threw low voltage/check engine alarms and went into limp mode. After several phone calls to MC it took the dealer over a month to discover and fix the problem. :o

The bottom line is that if you are looking to add perfect pass to your '96 you will need the "mechanical" system that comes with a servo motor. Never fear, the mechanical systems still work great. You may want to consider the Perfect Pass Wake Edition. I installed it on my '99 this year and have been very pleased with it's performance for both slalom and wakeboarding.

so how would a guy recognize DBW? I have an 06 with the RTP and based on what I've read it should be DBW, but before I commit to a PP system I'd like to be sure. Any recommendations? Pictures?

No throttle cable going to the throttle body. All you'll have back by the engine is a single cable going to the trans.

Call your dealer with your serial # and ask.
