View Full Version : Transmission problems with a 2002 X-9

Have a transmision problem, and not sure if it is the transmission itself or the flex plate. The sound it is making is like a rocks or marbles in a tin can. It's usually worse when just putting it into gear, forward or reverse. Sometimes it goes away, but it does come back. If I put my hand on the transmission or bellhousing while it is in gear, I can feel a definite vibration or knocking in time with the noise. Checked the fluid and it is OK. The engine runs fine, and the boat rides fine even with the knocking noise, no noticable vibration while under way, pulls a skier or tube fine, no problems.

Any one have any ideas on what it may be? Any way to test if it is the transmission versus the flex plate? It's an LQ-9 engine and a ZF Hurth 45C (HSW 450 D-V) transmission, with only about 325 hours on it.

V-drives are known to be some noisy suckers. Every V-drive or powerslot tranny makes a racket, especially when going into reverse....but marbles in a tin can sounds a bit more noisier than i would like....

You might be able to take a peek down inside that area after removing the starter?

Is it an X-9 with a V-Drive?? Or is that just the model of the trans?

It is not a V drive, it is a direct drive. The V is just part of the transmission model number.

Sorry, thought you had a V-Drive. I would have to say, that kind of noise coming from yours would means you got something loose...
