Drivetrain rattle

88 PS 190.

It's making some rattling at no-wake speed coming from the rear of the engine or tranny. It sounds kinda like pinging, but heavier, more mechanical. I replaced the damper plate last year, which didn't help, and also replaced the tranny fluid, which looked ok. The prop looks to be in pretty good condition. It seems to perform fine, other than occassionally it has a very slight delay, engaged, but going from NWS to WOT. What could it be?

Have you checked the strut bushings, the shaft alignment, the shaft packing?

Thanks for the bump. I haven't, but there's no lateral play in the shaft at all. After doing a search, seems like some people had a problem with a miss in the firing order that caused a similar problem. It runs like a dream over 800 rpms.

does your RPM's fluctuate while in neutral? if so replace your PCV valve.
i have a problem with that same sound at NWS i have not replaced the damper plate yet though. my pcv valve keeps on going bad prematurely i think its getting oil in it the the valve cover.
