View Full Version : Boat FINALLY runs really good

Well after 3 different carbs, multiple distributors and lots of wrench turning the boat finally runs good.
I had an Edelbrock 750 cfm carb on the boat that I thought was a Marine version (it's what I ordered) but every once in a while during accelaration from a dead stop the boat would cut out and die!
After LOTS of calls to Vince and Richard at Ski Dim diagnosing about everything I could think of I did some web surfing on Jegs site, which is where the carb came from. After looking closely at some pictures comparing the auto version and the marine version of the Edelbrock carbs it became pretty clear that somehow I had the auto version. That explained the stumbling symptom my boat had accelarating on a plane (wrong floats)
Long story short, installed the new carb last night and water tested it this evening. The boat ran like a new one! Only tinkering I did was adjust the idle, the fuel/air ratio was good right out of the box.

Moral of the story:

1. double check your parts before installing
2. If anyone tells you there's no difference between and marine and auto carb run away!

Almost forgot, HUGE Thanks and Kudos (once again) for Skidim!! Had the idea of the solution not been brought to my attention I'd still be with a funky running 86' :worthy:

Jeff,

Amen to that!! Discount Inboard Marine rocks. :worthy: I just had a medium problem on mine. I emailed a photo to JimN and he picked out the problem. After 3 phone calls totalling over an hour with Vince at DIM I got a new intake manifold installed and everything back together. We went out yesterday and ran HARD. It runs great now.

jeff, I sent you a PM back. I would also like to give my thanks to skidim. just for having knowledge of what they sell. Most places you have to go through about 20 people before anyone knows anything. Not there. Ok I'm done now

Well maybe I spoke to soon! Pulled a bfooter this morning and then slalomed and then we wakeboarded for a while. Ran great for all that then decided to take another set and she kept stumbling all over herself. I thought maybe it was vapor lock (93 degrees here) but even after cooling down, no go. Finally got it back to the dock limping. Pulled it out of the water and she happily took in about 21 gallons. Maybe that was the problem  How big a tank does this year boat have?

Uhh yeah there Jeff, that could be the problem. That's why I always fill my boat up on the way home from the river.

Well I never should have made this post, I jinxed myself! After running out of fuel I put a new fuel filter on the boat. I filled the tank and tried to restart it and no go, took the fuel filte off and it was a nightmare! Probably a small handful of ash type deposits. So.... I thought new fuel filter and she'll run. Not the case. It starts almost everytime no problem but won't run more than about 4 seconds and runs really rough when it does. If you try and rev it up to clear it out it shake so bad you'd think the boat would come apart and then it dies. Any suggestions??

Did you burn up the fuel pump?

I don't know maybe? Are these mechanical pumps strong?

No. Change it to electric while you have it off.

Thanks Jeremy. Is there a difference between marine and auto electric fuel pumps? Whats the advantages of going with Electric?

I really cant tell you. I wouldnt think there would be a difference. But hey I was wrong one other time. advantages better holeshot, suposedly better fuel "mileage" but I really dont know other than that.
