I just replaced the starter relay on my '91 with the ford 351 motor. Anyway, the old relay had three posts on it and the new one has 4. It looks like the extra one on the new one is a ground post. The onld one had no ground wire connected to it. My question is should I leave it as is with no ground or run a ground wire jumper?

Why did you replace the starter relay? Does it work without grounding the forth post?

JS,

I could be wrong but I know when I hold the old style starter on my boat and a new starter relay that 4th post remained unused. I updated to the Permanent Magnet style starter that Ski Dim carries (which rocks BTW!) and that starter requires the use of that pole for a jumper wire. Might call Ski Dim to confirm or maybe Jim will post on here.

At the ramp over Memorial Day my starter got stuck kicking over, I'm assuming that the relay got stuck. Anyway, upon further inspection I managed to break one of the posts off of the relay checking connections. So if it wasn't broken before, it is now. Cheap part to replace. I'll call Skidim on Monday about the 4th post. I'm sure my starter will be next so atleat I'll have the updated relay for it when I have to upgrade.

on some of the older ford solenoids the extra post becomes 12v+ during cranking. this provided full battery power to the coil + only during cranking. try it with the post unhooked.
