Well then, I'm having some issues with my top-end speed on my 1997 Prostar 205 with 285hp GM 350. My issues may stem from the stock prop, high elevation (4500'), or engine maintenance issues. Or a combination of a few. I'm topping out at about 39+/- mph @ 4200rpms. The speedos have been calibrated, and are true to form. The prop is straight, no bend/nicks/etc. But it is a stock 3blade 11x13 (i think). I would think I could still hit 42 no problem, and hate to spend $400 on a new prop when that may not be the culprit. Just thought I'd drop on here and see if any one has similar issues/suggestions/ or what everyone else is running at top end at what elevations? Any info would be appreciated. thank all!

Looking in that era of engine your GM 350 should have a wide open throttle (WOT) rpm of 5,000. If your engine isn't making it up there, you may need to get a different prop. For my 94' LT1 at 6,500 feet elevation I got a new prop from OJ and it's a 13 X 11 LC 1" XMP 3-blade.

When I go to Idaho (3,000 feet I think), I have all kinds of power. Pretty much a hot rod at that elevation.

The manual says you should be around 43 or 45 mph top speed. Here is a link for some owner's manuals:

Well then, I'm having some issues with my top-end speed on my 1997 Prostar 205 with 285hp 351. My issues may stem from the stock prop, high elevation (4500'), or engine maintenance issues. Or a combination of a few. I'm going to head out today and write down the rpm ranges, at certain speeds, but for the time being, I'm topping out at about 39+/- mph. The speedos have been calibrated, and are true to form. The prop is straight, no bend/nicks/etc. But it is a stock 3blade 11x13 (i think). In 1997 MC did not put a FORD 351 285 HP HO in the boats. That is probably your problem
