Just got my 2005 Prostar 197 and the depth finder is acting odd, to say the least. It started off not wanting to read anything but .5, then it would lock onto a depth and no matter where I went, it would always read that depth. So, I talked with my dealer, and they thought it might be a void under the transducer, so I pulled it out, cleaned it up, and reattached it(I chose to do the work myself, because I had put my last one in and knew what to do). First time out after doing this, it still didn't work, then I had it out 2 days later and it worked perfectly. Just had it out last night and it is acting odd again.
Any ideas.......???????

Thanks

I have a 2001 ps 190 and I use it on a river which has a very muddy bottom. The only time I seem to experience this problem is after I have beached it and am returning to the water. My assumption is the the bottom of the boat get covered in mucky goo. However, once I get back out in the water and on the step it usually goes away.

Doesn't feel the same as your problem, yours sounds like a defective part or faulty installation. Hopefully someone can diagnose.

If your depth finder was dealer installed and not factory installed your dealer may have not mounted it in the correct location. I had trouble with my depth finder also and it turned out my dealer mounted it in the wrong location. My research tells me that there is a specific place on your hull (to the driver's side and behind the motor basically) that the depth finder must be mounted or it will not read correctly. Where is yours located? If that's not it - it could possibly be a bad transducer. Good luck. I'm no expert but have some experience in the matter.

The depth finder was installed at the factory and you are absolutely right, there is a special place for it to be mounted, right next to where the drive shaft goes through the hull. I'm thinking you are right about the transducer being bad, maybe it is working intermitently.

curious about the new depth finders, it is my understanding that on the new boat the depth reads where you would see the hours, etc. Is this correct? If so, how do you compare it to the single gauge with large screen? I am used to seeing the big numbers......Finally since you have new boats...(not to hijack the thread) how do you like the drive by wire? I don't need all the fanciness of pp, and curious if mc cruise would be suffiecient.

You are right, the new depth readout is on the Tach, and I like it. On my 2002 197, I had the larger readout on a seperate gauge, and honestly, it is better on the tach, that way your eyes are always on it. You can toggle between the air temp, water temp, hours, time, and depth at the push of a button.
As far as the MC cruise goes, I like it as well. If you are a tournament skier, you'll want to go with the Perfect Pass, because of the timing magnet ability and some other things, but for everything else, the MC cruise is great. You can drive it by speed or RPM and it does a nice job of countering the pull. With the MC cruise, you'll have a readout in the right side(starboard) speedo gauge, rather than having a different gauge all together.
Hope this helps.

I just took my '04 210 into the dealer today. I told the service manager what it was doing. He was 95% sure it was the transducer. He's going to switch them out and see if that fixes the problem. I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping it's that easy.

my 03 X10 did that too....they replaced the transducer and it worked like a charm.

Thanks everyone, I am contacting my dealer today and will just get a new transducer. Hopefully I'll have the same luck as you!
