View Full Version : Pimp Your Mastercraft
I know this is simular to a thread I did last year but here goes.
What are you doing to make your boat or boating experience better this year?
I added the 2nd battery and added a new slalom ski. I hope to add sub and another amp before the summer is over!
What about you cats?

I am going to start a thread on my improvements here shortly. I just picked up my 05 209 and I have a long list of things I am doing. I will be detailing the install for all those interested. Here is a brief list:
Pioneer MP860 Head Unit
Pioneer Wired Marine Remote
Ipod Connections
4 Kicker RS65.2 Speakers
Kicker L7 12" Sub
Fusion T-Series Tower Speakers
Kicker SX1250.1 Sub Amp
Kicker SX900.4 Full Range Amp
Three Blue Top Optimas with Relay Isolators
Unlike other installs I have seen I am trying to make this system almost invisible. By being creative I am trying to utilize wasted space in the boat instead of storage space. So far it has been a pain but I think it will be worth it in the end. I will post some pictures soon........
93 PS 190, here's what I added this winter

-Alpine 350W @ 2 0hm mono sub amp
-Alpine Head unit

Next project on the list to sandblast and repaint the trailer.

Added an amp and second battery. Cut two more speakers into the motor box for four total now. Added Perfect Pass (thanks again Andre). Bought a wakeboard for myself, a new O'Brien Siege slalom ski for my wife and a wake surfboard for the family. Also added on of these http://www.flameball.com/Flame3/fl3-31.htm blue flame on ivory.

2002 X30:
This winter I did the following:
1) bought the boat
2) added a bimini top
3) fixed my 3-vent heater
4) added trailer guide pole pads with no white lettering
5) added transparent transome protection tape to protect the metal flake gel coat
What I plan on doing during the summer:
1) add spare tire and MasterCraft tire cover
2) tweek my stock stereo - it sounds like a tin can
3) Ski rack attachment for my 2005 Tower
4) Acme prop and prop puller kit
5) speaker and board rack covers or "socks"

Speaker/Light Pods for Tower
JL 6450 6 Channel Amp
2 new MTX 10" subs

How does the IPOD connector work on the XMD1 head unit? I have been contemplating either doing that or swapping the head unit out for a XMD3 unit that already has the AUX inputs.
I currently use a FM modulator.

Prostar205 - Are you looking to convert the wakeboard rack to a ski rack or add a new ski rack? We did the conversion of the wakeboard rack. Looks good and much cheaper. :)
I replaced all of the interior with new MC skins, tune-up on my 86 ProStar 190... Then went and bought Diesels 95 205.... (All under the radar when ERKOEHLER was searching high and low for his)...... BTW, the stereo, amp, and sub that Diesel installed in the 205 was a beautiful job and can't wait to see pics of the install on his new 209!!!!!!

I had the boat out this past weekend for the first time with the iPod hooked up and it sounded really awesome. I can hear the difference between a CD and the iPod when I compare them, but if you aren't comparing it back and forth you probably won't notice the difference.
I used a mini cup holder mount on the driver side cup holder. I then wired in a second power adapter (AKA cigarette lighter) that is wired to the key and plugged a charger into it permanently I ran the charger cord up through the bottom of the cup holder. This way the charger is only powered when the boat is on since that is the only time the stereo is powered. I also ran the 1/8 stereo plug up through the bottom of the cup holder.
The last thing I have left to do on it is install the switch that tells the XMD1 that the iPod is connected. I have a generic switch from Radio Shack, but I don't like the looks of it. I am installing a MasterCraft switch that won't have power to it (if you power the switch you will fry your stereo) on the lower right control panel that usually controls the ballast. I will take some pics when it’s done.

Over the past two months I have done the following either myself or contracted out to the dealership, not a Mastercraft dealership, because they wouldn't call me back, typical. 89' Tristar 190
Added a Clarion 1000W Amp
Added 4 Clarion 6.5" speakers around the inside, previous locations
Added a Clarion basic CD player
Installed a Monster Tower
Installed 6 light bar across middle
Installed 4 Liquid Audio 6.5" Speakers on the tower
Complete new custom upholstery
Complete new Carpet
Installed Electronic Ignition in place of factory points system
New Boat pads for trailer
Rewired trailer lights
All of this and I have yet to put it in the water, go figure. My wife is probably getting a little frustrated with all the dinero spent thus far. I will start a new thread once all is complete and post pics. It has been a fun project with a good end result.

I rewired all my accessories with 6 gauge wire. It made a big differance with the amps. Now I have to turn the gain down.
I installed a second battery, and isolator, and battery condition indicator.
I am in the process of installing a High amp alternator, and rewiring.
Oh yea this weekend, had my new acme repaired, from doing battle with a floating 2 X 6 $100.00 for the first 30 minutes of memorial day. ( glad I kept the old O.J.)

Well, the stereo was the big upgrade and 50-75% of the time my old boat sits outside so I needed a good cover. The stereo is almost obnoxiously loud. I haven't been out without the baby yet so polluting the neighborhood has been about as lound as I've gone (25 on the volume setting and still no distorting). My boat has turned into a labor of love. I know when I sell it I won't get what I have in it.

It sounds like a tin can and there is very little bass coming from the Clarion sub. I have messed around with the head units bass and treble controls. The next thing is to trace the wires for each speaker to see which amp they are connected to and mess with the crossovers and gain settings.

Some newer headunits come with the receiver built in, and all you have to do is get the antenna.. a subscription is still required tho.

Well, by searching for the model numbers of the amps I have found this
the APA4204 is a 4 channel amp, is this it? http://www.clarionworld.co.uk/stock/apa4204.asp
and the other one should be this one
http://www.navaidmarine.com/products/P-CLARION/APX400.4M.htm
It looks as if both of the amplifiers are 4 channel amps, one of which might be running in 3 channel mode.
what you can easily do, is just pull the RCA's off of an amp and find out whats doing what.
the subwoofer amplifer and whatever its connected to will probably be in 3 channel mode to get some more power out of the amp. By bridging you are combining two of the amplifer channels to make one larger one.
I am going to guess thats what they have done for the sub.
More than likely the above amp will also have a seperate "gain" control for both channels 1 and 2, and 3 and 4, assuming that the above is correct, you will want to adjust the gain and crossover frequencies accordingly. the crossover settings should be set to LPF, or low pass filter, you wouldn't want the sub playing Full range, there is no point.
You will want to do something similar up front.. it depends what crossover functions those amplifiers have, if you were to take a picture i might be able to give some more input.. but if you have an adjustable crossover frequency on the other amplifier you will want to set that between probably 70-80 hz.. and have the fronts using the ALL or Full range feature on the crossover.
Adjusting the gain, is going to be tough.. but it can be done yourself.
you might want to tow the boat into a stereo shop, and see if they might be able to either help you set the system up the way YOU want it, or maybe adjust the wiring if possible. The way I always set the gains is to turn up the volume to where i usually will be playing it, and then match the gains to that point saying well this is the loudest it can be without distortion, then usually turn it down one click from there. its hard to explain that on the internet, but easy to explain in person because I could show you.
If you have any other questions feel free to either post, or just shoot me a pm.
Boys I have a question. Since you all have added so much "bling" to your boats, I figured you were the ones to ask. We just added a light bar to the tower on the boat. Now the question is, will an extra battery be needed for any reason?

Will the lights be used when the engine is off? If not, or not for long periods of time I would say no. What is the current draw? The alternator thats on the boat should be very sufficient to power 4 lights and the rest of the electronics while the engine is running, especially while towing a skiier when the motor is at ~4k rpm or so.
Anything you plan to use when the boat is off, will need to be taken into consideration when figuring out if a 2nd battery is necessary.
It is a 6 light bar with 55 watt bulbs. We don't leave the stereo on when the boat isn't on. I don't see us using the lights without the boat running. Thank you. :)

Check out this discussion. I have some pictures in that post of my 97 PS190 that should have the same interior as your 96.

Let's see...
Repaired swim platform (gouged it turning away from dock)
Had some warranty work done re lights, a gelcoat crack on engine cover.
Installed Ipod connection for Clarion system
]That said, I am really interested in adding tower speakers and an additional amp. I have the JL Audio 500 watt system, but no Tower Speakers. Any thoughts here? seems like most folks have limited experience in the area and since pricing of the speakers is high ($1500+) just want to make certain I am somewhat informed.[/COLOR] Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks!

Bought a 2004 X-9 Last year.. It came with 2 fat sacs & that's about it. I recently put 2 bazooka tubies on the tower (they sound awesome!) Just bought a tower mirror..finally, a wired remote for the clarion xmd3.. finally & an Ipod hookup. All those to be installed shortly. Next step is to get a PerfectPass & led lights for the inside! Any other recommendations?

I did underwater lights on my 03 myself and was never happy with how they turned out. I used red LEDs and they just were not bright enough in the dark water that I boat in to make a noticeable effect. Here is a photo on the 03.
On my 08 I get the factory installed underwater lights and love them. They are really bright and you can definetly see them in dark water.

I am going to add to my new 2007 X2 this winter.
-A JL amp and two JL tower speakers with lights (maybe a sub)
-A Harmon Kardon Drive+play 2 for the Ipod.
-A new Island Surfer blue lake board
-More ballast fat sack system plumbed into my main lines for surfing.
-tower braces (I guess they are back ordered on them or something)
-possibly the new brackets for the teak platform so I can fold it down.

Here is a close up of one of the LEDs mounted to the hull of the boat. Basically I drilled a small hole just large enough for the wires to go through. Then I drilled small pilot holes for the screws that hold them on. I siliconed the crap out of it and never had a problem.

Wiring for platform?
Or you could use the tie down hooks on the bottom of the boat. One hook is positive and one is negative. Then you just wire from the switch to the hooks on the inside of the hull. I would advice a fuse inline just to be safe. My X9 was done this way and never had any issues. Good Luck.

This winter on my '97 PS190:
1. Remove all decals, restore gelcoat & put new original decals on.
2. Replace the stupid MC mirror mount with a windshield mount.
3. Replace Bimini plastic with SS hardware.
4. Get 4 new 6.5" speakers (probably POLK MOMO)
5. Try to fix a 12"sub under the deck (brand not know yet)
6. 1 or 2 ch AMP only for SUB
7. New SS FlyHigh pole (the one with the swivel heads)
8. 4 Pop-Up cleats
Maybe the winter after that:
Complete upholstery job
Perfect Pass
Everything depends on the cashflow......

The 08 has two round LED lights mounted between the exhaust tips. Each LED light is composed of I think 8 individual LEDs. Unfortunately this is the only picture I have that even shows them.

Anyone have any idea why these underwater LEDs are so damn expensive? Is it just me or is $300 - $600 seem like a bit much for them? Their even that expensive on Ebay.
Definitely a cool effect & I'd love to have it on my ride.

Suprisingly, they have come down significantly since they first come out. They have also gotten small and brighter than the 36V 60amp monsters that were originally introduced.

Underwater Lights
2 more cockpit speakers, amps and a sub

The plan is:
Bring the boat home from winter storage at the marina in spring and drilling some holes for some speakers. Then an amp or 2. And a sub.
Thats the plan. But whatever happens happens.
The LED interior lights would be a sick upgrade too. Anybody know a way to do it at home and not buy the kit and maybe a little cheaper too?

I added roughtly 200 LED lights to the interior of my 2002 X30 last winter. It was a time consumming project but was relatively inexpensive. I got all the LEDs from www.superbrightleds.com. I then wired them all to the courtsey light circuit after removing the OEM incandescent light fixtures. I think the hole project cost my $150 max which included LEDs, wiring and connectors.
I did the following: New trailer tires, points, plugs, wires. New brass fittings on exhust manifolds, brass plugs on engine block. Chrome throttle knob, And the best is the American flag decal on the passenger side window.

I ordered the following:
ALM-C-x6: this is the chrome oval module that contains 6 single chip LEDs. I used 8 of these LEDs positioned on the vertical wall between the seats and the floor. They are $8.95 ea.
ALM-RB-x3: these are the rectangular modules that contain 3 single chip LEDs in each module. I used these under the gunnels to illuminate the cup holder areas and under the dash and sub. I think I used 8 of these modules. They are $5.49 ea.
ALS-x16: this is a string of 36 LEDs that I used to illuminate the storage areas under the passenger seat and in each rear locker on the right and left of the engine. I used 5 strings of 36 LEDs - 2 in each rear locker and 1 under the passenger seat storage area. They are $7.95 ea.
That should keep you busy for a while.
