Driving an '04 210/MCX (bought new this year). It's got 30 hours now and runs like a dream. I'm enjoying every second. However, I'm out with some friends last weekend and had just picked up my boarder. I put it into nuetral to turn off the PP and this horrible whiney sound came from the engine compartment. The guages all went dead. Took it out of nuetral and the sound went away and everything came back up. I immediately shut off the motor for about a minute. I started her up again and everything sounded normal and the gauges worked fine. Oil pressure good, temp good, power good. Ran it for another two hours with no trouble. Boarded all afternoon the next day and all was great. So again I ask, what was that?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might have brought it back to neutral too slow causing the transmission to squeal.

I would agree with Diesel. It has to be that or a belt. Welcome to the board. This is the place to ask.

My father-in-law's boat had the back to neutral whine for a few months after he got a new shaft. It's a bit disconcerting.

In recalling this incident in more detail, I actually did try to bring it back into nuetral a second time and got the same scary results. Again as soon as I took it out of nuetral the problem went away. It wasn't until I turned off the boat and turned it back on that the problem in nuetral disappeared for good. In probably three or four hours of operation after that it never came up again. Really weird. I'll check the belts closely tomorrow. Thanks!!!

Out this past weekend and it happened again...once in about five hours of operation and MANY rides meaning in and out of nuetral a lot. Unfortunately for me, was heading in yesterday and clipped a piece of drift wood. Dinged the prop. Minor vibration in the controls...hopefully not too serious. Took it in to the dealer this morning so will just have to wait & see. Anyway, asked them to check out the issue with nuetral as well. I'll post it back here if they say anything intelligent.
I have this gut feeling you will be hearing the words "could not duplicate". I hope I'm wrong, for your sake.
I've given up on gm dealerships largely because of this popular phrase. I think it's part of their training! GOOD LUCK

I had the same problem with my older 205. It wasn't just out of neutral but just when I pushed out of idle RPM's. It turned out to be my alternator pulley coming loose. Took nit off and reseated it with some loctite and have not had the problem in two seasons. Just something to check. Let us know!!

Update: Service guy told me today that since the problem is so intermitent, it's probably becuase I'm being too cautious in and out of nuetral. Says to move it in and out of nuetral "with authority" and I probably won't experience the problem again. BUT, they will check the thottle cable and the alternater belt just to be sure everything's cool. So, there you have it. We'll see...

For what it's worth, owners manual sez "..always move the control lever smoothly and quickly into gear. Do not hesitate. Slow gear engagement could damage the shifting mechanism in the transmission."
