On an '04 MC210 w/MCX, the incredibly generic owner's manual (applies to the entire line and all three engines) refers to checking the transmission cooler intake for debris. As many times as I've studied this section, I look in the engine compartment and nothing looks remotely designed for disassembly literally "before each use". I know I'm missing an easy and important step here. What is it?

I don't think it is necessary to check it every time. If you notice your temps creeping up I would definitely check the cooler. On the MCX you just have to pull the raw water intake hose off at the bottom of the transmission cooler. Then you can poke you finger in the housing to check for debris.

FYI: If you find debris, I have found the easiet way to pull it out is with a thin pair of needle nose plyers. I agree with previous responder that there is not need to check it every time out. I usually check it twice a year. If the water your in is dirty (contains lots of small debris), you may need to check more often. Also, if you do by chance burn out an impeller, you should look for & remove the rubber pieces in the tranny cooler.
