I am trying to help my brother inlaw get his boat running correctly again. When running at idle or slower speeds it does fine but when driving faster than 25-30mph the temp gauge climbs up to about 190 and engine goes into limp mode of some sort until the engine cools down. I replaced the impellar thinking it was a problem and it still over heats. He said he checked the screen under the boat and it was clear of any trash. My only other guess is possibly the thermostat. I dont know what engine is in the boat other than its a Chevrolet small block and has centerbolt valve covers. I am hoping to find a place I can order the t-stat online since we both work out of town and cannot get to it during the week. Also, is there any other water pickups under the boat to check or a hose i can disconnect to try and blow air through the pickup line to clear it, assuming something got passed the screen or something? He has had this problem the last couple times out, and I borrowed the boat this weekend and replaced the impellar thinking it was bad and it over heated on me also. My day of boating lasted about 10 minutes. Just want to get it working right so we can enjoy the boat again.
Thanks
Dave

a) Impellar DONE
b) Checked pickup DONE
c) Cleared OLD impellar pieces from Hoses NOT DONE
d) Cleared obstructions from top of TRANSCOOLER NOT DONE
And there you have it
Get that done run the boat hard watching TEMP and you should be good to go

Before going the thermostat replacement route, check the water inlet end of the transmission cooler for debris that may be blocking water getting to the pump. If it was blocked, that may have also damaged the impeller or at least cut off the raw water to the engine, but allowed enough water to prevent destroying the old impeller if it was still intact. When the old impeller was removed and replaced, was there anything left of the blades or had they been digested into the engine possibly blocking normal routes of cooling water or did it still appear to be OK?

Take a look at the owner's manual but it should be 142 thermostat in there. If not, you need to change it out. If it's the LT1, you have two thermostats, 160 and 142 degree.
I had a 185 stat in my LT1 engine and it was behaving just like yours. After new (and correct) thermostats....problem solved.
The link above was for the 1996 manual but keeps pulling up the 1995. I think they were the same engine options thought. Here is the "manual" link for other years as well.

The old impellar I removed was in good shape and no pieces missing. Had a few fins that looked like they had weather cracks like on a tire. Where do I look for the transmission cooler? What needs to be taken apart? Thanks for the help.

Take off the hose off on the inlet side of the transmission cooler and look inside and clean it out. The transmission cooler looks like this, but painted black, and has two lines to and from the transmission. Just trace the hose from the raw water pickup in the bilge to the transmission cooler.

Throttle body or LT-1? It matters, especially if the water circulating pump was replaced with the wrong kind. Same for the thermostat.
I would look at the intake side of the transmission cooler. That's where all of the crap accumulates.
Edited to add: And if I had read all of the other replies, I would have seen this one already.

OK, here's a better picture of what to look for, but may be in a different location, just check the cooler for debris,

I have a 97 PS205 and had a similar problem one time. For me, it was a loose connection on the water filter at the intake. Look under the engine compartment, near the back. On my 97 it is near the transmission. It looks like a clear plastic cup, with a metal screen on the inside. The cup was not screwed in tightly enough, creating a suction leak. With the suction leak, the boat was not able to pull enough cold water into the engine to cool it. For me it was a simple and easy fix. I had not screwed it in tight enough during the previous year's winterization process. Hope this helps!
