How many quarts? It doesn't say in the manual and if I remember right from last year I put in 4 and the dipstick was showing over full.

4 just seems so low but to much is almost as bad as too little. After reading a different post I think the boat might be a 89 but I'm sure they didn't change the 351 in the late 80's

Ford 351w has a 5 quart pan. HOWEVER, due the tilt of the engine, there is always some left in the pan, when draining. (Also, depend on the brand of oil filter. Put in four, check oil level, then add up to 1/2 quart.

Make sure your new oil has some Zinc in it. 4 - 4 1/2 is right about

All the respected people on here quote SKIDIM. I called them yesterday on this exact same issue. They said the dipsticks are marked incorrectly on many of the 351's.
They said "drain oil, then add 4 quarts and mark your dipstick with a file, then add another quart, mark this spot with a file again so you have your high and low marks on the dipstick."
They say put in 5 quarts. The manufacturers of the dipsticks did not allow for the tilt of the motor.

Zinc in the oil? Not sure what you're talking about Hollywood.

Boyd, That's great information Boyd, make good sense and I'll do that, it's been a slow start to Summer here in NW Montana, hopefully I'll finaly get the hull wet this weekend...

ZDDP, its an additive that helps reduce wear on flat tappet lifter and cams. Newer roller lifters dont require it. Valvoline VR1 (IIRC) still has the zinc additive.
