1999 Maristar VRS210 Just had everything inside my bellhousing explode. Boat has been maintained and serviced regularly since 1999. Only 332 hours and the drive unit blew apart and cracked the bellhousing into gaping holes. Now have a steel plate lodged in the bellhousing as well. I can see the flywheel through the BH. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Thoughts???

I doubt it has anything to do with your transmission - far more likely to be the damper plate. Your tranny should be fine. You'll need a new bellhousing, new flex plate, maybe new starter, and repairs for any associated shrapnel damage.

This was not an uncommon problem with Malibus several years back, might even have been an Indmar recall. I know it was commonly part of extended warranty claims. Maybe it has to do with driveline stress from their wedge system - I haven't heard it to be much of a problem with MasterCrafts - never seen a catastrophic failure like that reported here.

Look anything like this?

Thanks for that feedback. It sounds more like you described as there is some form of stainless stell plate protruding from the bellhousing. I assume that could be the damper plate. Is there a way to check with Indmar for possible recalls?

Call 'em http://indmar.com

Indmar is a good company with a reputation for good customer service. Even so...your boat is 10 years old...I hope it works out for you but don't be disappointed if you don't get much rhythm on the issue.

Anyway, if they won't supply the new part (or pay for part of it), I'd replace it with an aftermarket damper plate from SkiDim. Supposedly it's a much more robust piece. The correct plate will depend on which transmission you have

Great photos. Looks like my boat and looks like the piece of plate wedged in the BH. I know 10 years is a lot but I will try. Gonna repair anyways. Thanks for the tip on the aftermarket piece. Great help.

Had the same problem.
Indmar said No and No Not even.
They were aware of problem and now have revised part, not sure if number is different, but he said extra load from ballasts etc. have contributed to failure so stonger part now avail
part# S885203, So keep up to date, will be pulling mine soon, see my post under 98 Maristar.
Any extra advice on removal, and bellhousing or flex parts would be great.

It is NOT a recall item.

The DAMPNER/FLEX plate is also NOT covered under most extended service contracts
FPC specfically

This damper plate explosion business was kind of a big deal for awhile with Malibu boats, especially in the 2003-2005 model years or thereabouts - I think that's right, that they improved the damper plate after that. Probably has something to do with the combination of ballast AND wedge. Back then, a lot of those guys got some warranty help from Malibu and/or Indmar (don't know which), but IIRC if the boat was out of warranty, the best they'd do was provide the new damper plate, no labor. Not something I've heard much about with MasterCrafts. Another reason to be skeptical of the wedge, I suppose.
