We got my father-in-law's boat back and put it through the paces this weekend. It's running smoother than before the accident and is vibration/rattle free. Pulls like a champ!

One thing that wasn't present before which has us wondering is our new noise. It's a high-pitched, short-lived sound that only occurs when we put the boat from gear back into neutral. It sounds like a squeaky gate being opened (metal on metal :( ) It's coming from around the shaft coupling. Never hear it when it goes into gear, only when it comes out. Shaft seal is giving 4-6 drops per minute in neutral.

Could it be that the lock nut over the seal is on too tight? Any other thoughts?

Had the exact same sound come from my 90 Nautique. A short squeek as the drive shaft slowed to a stop. Repacked the shaft seal and it went away.

Thanks, Dan. When you "repacked." Do you mean you completely undid all the packing and rewound it? I haven't done this before, so forgive my ignorance. Will probably take it back to the dealer that did the repairs anyway.

Doug, it may be the strut bushing. These are pretty tight and I know mine squeals if you turn the prop by hand when out of the water. The last few turns of the prop after you go into neutral may be what you hear.

When I repacked, I replaced the wax cord.

So what's involved in losing the noise there if it turns out to be the strut bushing?

That should be a new strut bushing.. If not Iíll bet it should have been replaced with the rest of the repair

I'm not sure Doug. My boat doesn't make this noise when running, just that it sounds like a rusty door hinge when I turn the prop by hand. Is the boat out of the water where you could fire it up, put it in gear and back to neutral, you may be able to pinpoint where its coming from.
Like the shaft packing, the bushing in the strut is lubricated by water. I don't think there's any thing you can do to adjust it. Its pretty much a solid bushing with some rifiling to the surface that draws water through to lube it. Keep us posted. I am assuming that in the repairs the strut an/or bushing was replaced. I forget what the extent of the damage was.

Strut bushings will make all kinds of different noises on land. I've had some some not make a peep and some scream like a banshee (even with a full on water hose hitting it) but then not make a noise in the water but I don't have that many data points.
But who knows what still might be out of alignment? Replacing the bushing (didn't they just replace it?) means pulling the prop and shaft. You might be able to carefully press the bushing out of the strut without damaging the gel coat but if it is not somewhat new, you will most likely will need to remove the strut.

Strut was not replaced. I don't think you're saying it's bent, but if it was bent, wouldn't I be getting vibration while underway? I'm going to call the service tech when he gets in in the morning and see what's what. It's got a new shaft, so whatever was done to get it in there needs adjusting.

The strut could be cockeyed and no vibration but not very likely. Easy enough to check with a long staight edge.

If the strut is bent, it won't necessarily cause a vibration, but it does throw the thrust line off and can wear the cutlass bearing prematurely. If the boat is coming out of the water and you want to run it on the trailer, spray a little WD-40 on the shaft above the strut. If the noise goes away, you at least know where it's coming from, anyway. I would have them check the strut again, though. Especially since the shaft was just replaced. If that bent, it's not hard to see why the strut would bend, too.

The strut bearings can't be removed with the shaft in place.
