I have a 2000 x star.
While I was out on the water today the boat just stopped. The prop and shaft slide out and the ruder stopped the prop and bent it. I got a tow and got the boat out of the water.
I checked everything out and found this. The nut that goes on the end of the shaft vibrated off and the shaft slid out and caused the damage.
How do you get the shaft back in place and what should I check for as far as damages go. I'm obviously going to have to get the prop straightened.

I would rebuild prop, check for damage on rudder, check for damage on strut, do an engine alignment, reinstall nut w/ lock-tite, and TIGHTEN THE NUT!

Alright.
The shaft wont just slide back in place.
Does that shaft housing come off?

New nut installed with a impact wrench. Send us the prop to check it out. Re-align the motor. I think the rudder will be fine.

Make sure when you put this back together that you have at least 3 threads above the nylock...this is an issue that continues to this day, they still seem to slip through production.

BTW...with a nylock in place LocTite should not be needed...if the nylock is properly engaged.

i had the exact same thing happen to me in my 2001 xstar
Lucky for me i just reassembled and tightened the nut - no real damage

If the shaft slid out of the coupler, unless it was still partially in the hole, I'm not sure the engine needs realigning although if it hasn't been checked in recent memory, it's probably time anyway.

Have you backed the prop nut away deliberately from the prop hub or has it worked itself away from the hub and against the cotter pin?

This exact same thing has happened to me twice in my '02 X30. Luckily I was able to just push the prop/shaft back up into the transmission and install a new nut. I've heard that once those nyloc nuts come off, throw them away and get a new one.
