Hello,
Long time visitor, first time thread poster. I have a 1972 MasterCraft Skier and I've looked high and low for the hull identification number on this boat and I can't find it anywhere. I've looked to see if it's stamped into the hull at the rear as described on this site and have had no luck. Did they even stamp the HIN into the hulls back in 1972?
Thanks for your help.

Back in the day, most had a aluminum plate with the HIN stamped in it and pop riveted to the transom on the starboard side in the general area of the present day Dymo label HIN's.

Like No1 said, my 73 has a plate on the starboard side of the transom, I would assume yours would be the same. Do you have any pictures of said boat?

Thanks for the responses - my boat doesn't have the aluminum plate on the transom, I wonder what happened to it. I do have some pics of the boat and as soon as I figure out how to post them I will. Right now I'm off to my girls' softball game.
Thanks again.

Sweet boat!! I'd love to see more pics. My '71 S&S has a nomenclature plate just forward of the throttle on the starboard gunnel. What's your engine?

Thanks! It has a Holman and Moody 302 that runs like clockwork, just a great engine,it never lets me down. I'll have to go out and look for the nomenclature plate but I don't recall ever seeing it. I would guess if I haven't seen it by now it's probably not there. I'll try to dig up a few more pics and post them later this weekend. Thanks again.

Is the HULL ID # on your title?
Is it on your registration?
If it is you can always make a plate for it and have it affixed to the stern in a permanant
way

http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html.
This is an article describing the HINS from 72-84, and from 84 to the present. As you'll see, HINs were not required until November 1, 1972. It is likely your boat was built before then. Often, on older boats, there is a HIN or manufacturer's serial number screwed into the stringer near the engine, or located on a plate in or around the driver's area. I've seen them under the gunnel on the drivers area.
Good looking old boat.

Thanks for this history on HINs and for all of the responses in general. This site is a great source for information on MasterCraft boats new and old.

That is the same.
If you search the "for sale" on this site the boat is the same blue one from Florida that was for sale. The ad remains on this site.
I bought her back in May, drove from Nashville to Melbourne Beach Fl to pick her up...14 hr ride back home towing the boat.
It was not in the "perfect shape" listed in the ad. I had some hull work done ($1000) and need to restore the trailer then do some engine work the replace the cutlass bearing.
I love the color and I get stopped by other MC here on the Cumberland River

Hey gid, great looking boat! I'm pretty partial to the old 72's. I also had to do quite a bit of work - stringers and floor etc. when I first got it. I replaced the original trailer with a 1994 MasterCraft Barefoot trailer taht I modified to fit my 72'. Does yours have a HIN? I have been unable to locate mine and it sounds like it might not have one due to the early production.
Hey nascar, this boat came from Hickory, NC and now resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. It happens to be the original gelcoat color, I guess the original owner must have been a Carolina fan.
Thanks,
Tom

I have not looked on the boat, there was a title with the boat (Florida) so I used that # when I registured it here in Nashville.
-- two owners before me replaced the stringers, floor, repainted the boat (on the trailer) and rebuilt the engine (for the most part)
Well, she broke down yesterday - the good news was I was coming into my dock when the engine just died and would not restart; so I could tie up the boat and tow her in with my homemade jon boat

Sorry , to hear she died on you . Hope it is something easy to fix . keep us posted .
FINALLY got some motivation to look at the problem; started at the battery and followed the red / black lines. I found the nut for the red line to the starter was very loose, tightened it and it started. I need to put her in the water for a test run.
I tired to post a somewhat recent photo of her...the trailer has been painted white
