i installed a new head unit and everything is fine except for when i turn the key off the power is totally killed. When this happens, all the presets are lost, the clock resets, etc.
It is a real pain in the butt. I have checked the wiring and everything looks to be wired right from what the H/U maunal shows.
I have a 1991 ps190.
anyone know what else i could check?
I noticed that there is a pinkish wire labeled "mem" under the dash - I have tried attaching that one to the power lead as well with no luck.

A little help please!

one of the leads from the stereo needs to be on a permanent supply from the battery not sure which stereo you have if you have the manual it should mention the wiring, sorry if you already new this thought it worth a mention

you should have a red wire and a yellow wire. One goes to the key switch (red) and the other to constant battery (yellow-memory).

I don't remember which one but try this and if it works, great, if not switch the two.

its a Sony Xplod Marine CDX-501

It shows that there is a yellow one that needs to be connected to power at all times. i thought i had that right.

a red one that is connected to power from the acc position of the ignition.

What color is the all time power wire typically under the dash?

cant you put a meter on the wire your already connected to,if not there should be a live wire somewhere, if not try running a temp wire from the battery to see if that cures it.

NEVERMIND!!

I just fixed it.

I was pretty sure that I had it wired correctly.

There were two spring loaded things wired inline with both power leads. clear white in color. They must of went bad. I cut them out and rewired without them, now everything works fine.

What are those for ?
Do I need them?

Those are the fuse holders, were there were fuses inside? Those are kind of important if you dont want to fry your stereo.

You are kidding right?

nope - not kidding.

I haven't been messing with this stuff long enough to know any better.

Wouldn't the fuse in the back of the head unit blow if there was a chance it would fry?

If the consensus is that I need them then I will wire them back in.

Should I wire them back in?

mikey you dont need a concensus to find out if you should wire them in, just put them back in fuses are there for a reason agree ones in head unit should blow but you should have them in also to be safe

I would. A power surge could fry the head unit. The manufacturer put them there for a reason.
