The bearing on my johnson raw water pump has started squeeking and going hot, so I either have to change the bearing or the whole pump. Has anybody changed the bearing? Is it possible?

I think you'll have to change the whole pump

There is a rebuild kit, but from what I hear, you'll be better off replacing the whole pump. If the bearing is gone and it overheated, you may find that the pump shaft has been damaged.

I replaced the bearing and seal in mine and it lasted about a month. The shaft had enough wear on it that it wore the new seal out. I replace the entire pump then, easy job, and have not had a problem since.

I needed a quick fix for this weekend, so i went to to work and pressed the bearings out, very very easy on the johnson pump, no locking rings su just straight forward if you have a press. Theese bearing are a very common size(40x17x12 millimeters) and they are dead cheap, so if the shaft are straigt and look ok in the sealing area, I woud change the bearings and the inner seal instead of buying a new pump.

I just changed the seal on mine and so far it is holding up. the part number at napa is 6410 it is a metric oil seal 16x28x7. The seal was $4 and It changed out in minutes. Use a 3/4 deep socket to drive it in.
