I have a 94 Prostar 205 with 556 hours. I started it today in the driveway to get ready for the season and when i was wiping the back down I noticed that the rudder is cracked on the left side ( looking towards the front of the boat) right where it pivots. the crack is about 1 1/2 to 2 " long. Has anyone ever had this happen? Can I have it fixed or do I have to get a new one?

I found the rudder cracked about 2" down from the top/stb. side on our '89 in 2003 and replaced it with a MasterCraft by Design polished S/S rudder. The CS dept and one of the engineers at MC I know said, "Do not try to repair it"!
Replacement rudders can be found at a MC dealer or here, http://www.elberts.com/underwatergear.htm, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1123 and http://www.ojprops.com/products/rudder_kits among other places.

Here are some pics. What do you guys think. Seen anything like it? We haven't hit anything, what would have caused it?

Yours is on the opposite side than mine was. Mine was probably from too much sanding and polishing added to the age, but I didn't want to take any chances, so I replaced it.

Did you replace the bearing and seal when you did yours?

In my case, all I did was use the new rudder with the new o-rings that came with the new rudder port in the kit, applied a light film of grease to the new rudder shaft, and inside the existing rudder port and on the o-rings. Be gentle with inserting the rudder shaft in the rudder port, not to tear or damage the o-rings as the shaft is inserted. Then after all was buttoned back up, I gave the rudder port three shots of grease thru the zerk fitting to seal/lubricate the shaft between the o-rings and was done.

Our port does not use O-rings to seal. We seal the port with a double lip seal, same seal that is used in our dripless shaft seal system. The port also has a Vesconite sleeve.

have a friend who had the same exact problem on his Supra, and one day on the lake, the whole thing just snapped off. you are gonna have to pull the gas tank out to get at hit. my friend wanted to try to fix it but there was no way he could. dont wanna be out on the lake when that happens.

you are gonna have to pull the gas tank out to get at it. .
He should not have to remove the gas tank if there is enough room above the rudder shaft to take off the tiller arm. It's about a 45 minute job once the seat, motor cover and floor panel is removed. All he has to do is lay a good thick blanket between the stringers, lay on your back and or stomach and go at it.
