You'll also have to get the motor to Top Dead Center (TDC) before connecting the wires, so you'll know where the #1 plug connects. Then, if the distributor hasn't been moved, you can reference to the rotor.

Hey bud - did the engine get turned over or the dist. get moved after the wires were off? If not, then all you should have to do is put them back on in the correct order.

See the long red mark I put on the slot on the harmonic balancer behind the bottom chrome pulley? By tapping the ignition switch, bring the mark/slot on the harmonic balancer around to as close to TDC (middle)(Top Dead Center) on the timing tab on the block as you can get it for Top Dead Center.

The safest way is to reference the firing order which will be somewhere on a tag on the top of your engine block or stamped into it. #1 on the distributor is the first to make contact with the rotor starting from top dead center as TMCno1 described.

Someone has probably pointed this out before, but Harold, is that a coke can over the coil?
