View Full Version : Stringer replacement 1908 S&S

My son and I are in the process of refurbishing his 1980 S&S ski boat. We decided to start by rebuilding the engine. The engine is complete now, but as we were removing the flexible exhaust hoses, we noticed the engine mount was very loose. Further investigation revealed a completely rotted left stringer. Soaking wet and rotted. we opened the top of the fiberglass and it appears that the entire thing could be gone. We are curious if this is a repair that is reasonalbe to do in the barn or is this something that should be left to the professionals? Is there a published procedure that we can get our hands on? It appears that the plywood flooring will need to be removed (it's in great shape) and then open the glass by slicing off the top to remove the remaining rotted wood. I have read some postings about some type of two part epoxy structural foam. As you can see we are at a total loss at this point. We thought we would be reinstalling the engine this week and be ready for the water my Memorial Day. Now we're not even sure if the boat is worth the effort. We are looking for encouragment and support. Our intent to restore this old classic is being challenged right now. PLEASE ADVISE.

I believe most folks would take the boat to a good fiberglass repair shop to get the stringer done. I have no experience in repairing or replacing stringers.

definitely worth the time and effort to fix it..........I used to have an 83 S/S. Get with Chaser_rct on this forum. He replaced his floor and I believe would be a wealth of knowledge. He has some pictures also. I'm sure there are other people that can help you on here too..........lots of good folks on here. Good luck.

TMCNo1, for some reason this cracks me up. Kinda reminds me of "Stapler Guy" in Office Space before he goes nuts and burns the building down.

If you can rebuild a motor, you can rebuild the stringers. As suggested there have been at least 20 stringer jobs documented on correctcraftfan.com. One guy Bill, has since moved on to a 95 mastercraft, but he created a website to document stringer, floorboard, and gelcoat replacement. Very comprehensive, including materials lists.

There is no guarantee that any one of the posters that asked about stringer replacement in 3 different threads would read any of the other threads. If so, they wouldn't have asked the question, they would have already known a possible answer, so I just freakin' went wild did all three.

.........did I miss something?? Where did it say 1908?? Looks like 1980 to me. come on, let's help a brother out!

Could be why we had 3 different stringer replacement posts/thread questions in one day.
I have done all I could do, with the info and pictures of previous projects, except change the title of the thread.:confused::confused::confused:
