On a 85 S&S, how do you know when the prop is far enough back on the shaft and you have the nut tight enough? I have a habit of over tightening things and am trying to be carefull.

As long as you have the key seated properly and have the nut on far enough (plus 3-5 threads) to put the cotter pin in the hole, I'd say that is good. IMO.

Basically, when you have the front of the prop hub making contact on the tapered part of the shaft and yet you may barely see evidence of the key slot.
One easy thing to give you assurance, is to put the prop on the shaft as far up as it will go without the key in place and rotate it on the shaft several times and make sure it's seated good as far forward as it will go, then mark the shaft with a fine point Sharpie or a piece of tape at the point of contact. When you then install the prop on the shaft with the key installed and the nut is tight, you should be on or just past that preliminary Sharpie mark or just on the tape, then remove the tape, install the cotter pin.
