My wife's 40th birthday is next month and I am looking for some place that will be romantic but also on the water. She will be in the Clearwater area during that time and I would like to find something around there if possible. At least within about `1-2 hours anyways.

We stayed over in the Miami area at the Grove Isle a few years ago and would love to find something just like it, but closer to Tampa.

http://www.groveisle.com/

The only thing lacking was the sandy beach at the Grove....but otherwise, an awesome place.

I am also going to have a few of her friends fly down as well to celebrate.

The kids will be staying with the grandparents in Clearwater so it will be an adults only type of setting.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!~

Na, take her to Vegas. I hear what happens in Vegas stays there. In other words she wont be able to yell at you for getting drunk and hitting on hot female dealers!

Do you want to ski or just looking for a nice beach?

Just looking for a nice beach. I did briefly think about a ski lake/cabin but that would be what "I" want rather than what "she" would want. She loves to be pampered...

I know that she would love to stay at the Grove place again but logistically, it would be difficult to get there with the grandparents driving, etc.

Water is a definite but the beach would be second. After all, she is staying with her parents that live in a condo that already has a beach.

If you've never been go to Key West. A lot of nite life & good hotels. One of the only places where you can watch the sun rise & set over water.

If you want to stay close to Clearwater, I'd recommend one of the resorts on Sanibel or Captiva. If you don't mind a little drive and want to really spoil the wife, try the Ritz Carlton in Naples. Another option (don't laugh): They have some really nice hotels at Disney (Grand Floridian) and Universal (Portofino) south of Orlando.

If you want to spoil the wife in the Keys, the Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada is very nice.

If you want to be closer to Clearwater, take a look at this condo. I have stayed here and know the owners of a couple of units in the building.

You are going down my alley!!

We drove down to the Keys and stayed at the Cheeca lodge on the same trip (stopping halfway at the Grove). Unfortunately, the Cheeca lodge had a fire last new years and is closed right now. This was one of the most memorable spots my wife has ever been to. We stayed one night in a private type house and the second night in the main building. Nice but different. Loved the private house...

I only have Friday, Sat and Sunday so the Keys are probably out. I don't want to spend my whole time driving.....

I'll check out the Ritz as well, thanks!

Try Anna Maria Island - Bradenton area.

I second Anna Maria Island. We have been going there every summer for the past 8 years. Many 5 star operations and quite quaint. check www.amgcrentals.com www.islandreal.com The further north you go the better the accommodation IMO ie. Holmes Beach

Sanibel Island is the only place for beach combing shells!
I hear the Seafood is some of the freshest in town.

As a matter of fact, I happened to be working in Sanibel yesterday. I agree with Shep and Atl, since the kids will be in clearwater, logistically, the west coast would be better. Sanibel and Captiva are two of the best options along the west coast for the type of vacation you're thinking about. South Seas resort is the popular one.

Awesome stuff guys, thanks! I will spend some time looking over some of the areas to see what looks good. This should be a great surprise!! As far as she knows, I will be sitting in Colorado on her B-Day.;)

Sanibel and Captiva are OK but watch out for the bugs, We went 2 years ago. Last year we went to The Ginn Resort at Hammock beach it's on the east coast south of St. Augstine. It blows away South Seas at Captiva for the same price. We will be going back this summer.

If you stay at Anna Maria Island there's a good restaurant just south at Cortez Beach called the Beach House. It's right on the gulf, beautiful sunsets & good food. Sit out side!!!

Just an update...

I'm flying down this Friday to surprise her (along with some friends), have dinner and then stay at the Ritz down in Naples. I think the pampering should be good and sitting on the beach! I can't wait!

Wow, what an awesome time! It was just perfect and she had NO idea we were there. She was even more surprised that a few friends also came down from Colorado to make the weekend.

The Ritz is amazing and wonderful service. It certainly was a very pretty penny but worth every moment. We loved the beach and raising the flag to get a drink. Truly first class!

My wife and I are the couple on the right:D

Thank you all for the great recommendations! It was a great 40th birthday for her!
