View Full Version : 2005 trailer brakes

I have a 2005 197 prostar. the wiring harness has been a challenge from day one. thought i had it working fine but this year when i pulled it out of the barn, the back up lights and therefore backing up, did not work. found a jump from the rear brake lights on the truck going into the harness on the truck. does not seem right. have a 2007 gmc sierra with the 8 point round connector. i pull all my other boats, dump trailers, you name it with no problems. this one has me stumped. should i have been able to plug and go from the dealer or is special wiring necessary to make this compatible. my dealer told me i should be able to plug and go but has not happened. i am in distress here. just learned about the key in the hitch so, i have a back up plan now.............that the boat is back in the yard and off the boat ramp. never received a trailer manual from the dealer. any help would be appreciated.

start from your trailer and work your way to the truck. do you have a multimeter? unwrap the mess of wires in your trailer tongue and see if the wires going to your reverse lights are getting voltage when the truck is in reverse. if not, then you have a problem with either a wiring harness connection or vehicle wiring such as fuse or ground problem.
