According to my '89 Owners Manual, owners papers, 4200 to 4400 rpm WOT depending on the prop. Same for PowerSlot and non PowerSlot.

Yup, 4400 is the max recommended RPM for the base 240hp 351w. I believe that recommendation is more based on the max power than it does on the strength of the internal components- the HO version has the same bottom end and is recommended to run up to 4800 RPM. I turn my stock bottom ended 351w up to 5200 and dont give it a second thought. Back when it was still the base 240hp, I turned it 4600 and picked up holeshot and top end with an Acme prop, so I would say its plenty safe to turn it a little higher than the manufacturer's recommendation.
