I'm looking for a used pickup, approximately 1999-2002, and 100-120k miles. Which was best those years: Chevrolet, Ford, or Dodge? Primarily concerned about reliability because of their age.

I will be keeping the truck for 3 years as a tow vehicle while I'm in law school. I'm going to Columbia Law School in New York, so it will mostly be driven the 3 months I am at home during the summer.

99-03 F250 with 7.3 diesel. The engines suck after those years. What were they thinking.

Whatever you get, make sure its a 1 ton Diesel with 4wd. UMP can confirm this for you. A forklift is also a good choice

Of course, I would never dream of towing a 4500 lb. boat and trailer combo with anything that has a tow rating below 10,000 lbs.

But, in all seriousness, I am looking at 1/2 ton trucks as it is all I can afford at my age.

Go with a Ford or Chevy. I wouldn't trust a Dodge with over 100K miles.

Not sure how much sarcasm is implied in this post, but I've got a '97 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L that is still going strong with nearly 200,000 miles. Had it since new and it has had no major problems, but has been taken good care of. Wouldn't hesitate to pick up a used one in the year ranges you are looking at with the 5.4L if it has been maintained well.:twocents:

I'm sure all three would be ok, but I'm a GM guy myself.

My '97 GMC 1500 4X4 was a great truck, sold it to a customer of mine and he still runs it everyday. Looks as good as new. It has the 5.7 liter engine, great power. I would stay away from the smaller V8 in the GMs, a bit underpowered. Best combo would be a 5.7 with a 3:73 rear, great for towing.

Apparently mine was made at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday.

2001 Expedition 5.4L 100K+ miles and running like a clock.

chevys 5.3 taps and knocks on cold starts but has the most comfortable seats for me. (6'4")
fords rear ends wine and are just more inconsistant on what goes wrong

I had a 1998 Silverado 1500 X-cab 4x4 that I bought in 1999 with 24,000 miles. I sold it in 2004 with 162K on it. Never did anything except fluid changes and tires. I saw the truck driving around last week so I know it is still running. My vote would be a Silverado

Haven't checked for awhile, but Consumer Reports may disagree with you on that one. Maybe someone that is a current subscriber can give us an update on this.

Anyone have any thoughts about the GM 4.8L V8? There is a good deal on a 1/2 ton 10 minutes from me, but it does not have the 5.3L. Keep in mind I will only towing a PS190, but I'm just worried that the engine is too undersized for the truck.

Since when is consumer reports right? Seems like they never are to me. I've bough quite a few things they gave bad reviews on, and never a problem. The said the Dodge Durango was a pile a crap. I had mine for about 130,000 miles, and never a problem. One set of brakes, one set of tires, one set of plugs, and oil changes.

Dont go with ford. Mine didn't blow. it just started on fire after sitting for 3 hours. It has to do with the speen control. It was an Expedition with 150k miles. Got the recall just before christmas and it burned on Jan. 6th. Hence i went back to Chevey...my 5th Tahoe...its on 02...Love it!!!!
