Antman

Hi all! Im new to this site as I have just bought what I believe to be a 190 stars and stripes, It has a pink and purple stripe through the centre of the craft, can i tell the year from the serial number? It starts with the letters MBC KU 19 **** (at least I think the third letter is a C its a little worn)
Can anyone help me, as I would like to restore it as it once was
Kind regards
Antman

The last two numbers of the hull identification number will let you know. For example, say the the boat is a 1986. If the last three are 686, it was an 86 built in 1986. If they are 586, it's an 86 that was built in late '85.

Back then the model was simply a Skier or 19 Skier, depending on the year.
Post some ome pictures from different angles. Can you read the entire HIN? or was it painted or glassed over?
Also, is the deck textured or smooth?
Antman

Hi thanks, I now know that it is a late 1980 model, is it a stars and stripes? Do you have a copy of the 1980 brochure?
Antman
04-04-2009, 06:08 PM
The Number is MBCKU 19 2580, im not sure if the deck is textured or not. What should the decals look like?
ski_king
04-04-2009, 06:09 PM
It is a 19 Skier (or was that Skier 19?)
Does it have the Capacity tag near the throttle? Mine has the model name there.
The Name Stars and Strips was never the official model name. It is just a name we use to describe those beautiful older boats.
If its an 80, the decals should look like the ad Jay has above.

I cannot understand why the centre stripe is pink and purple over the engine cover and that it does not have stars on like the photo, was this some kind of option when purchased new, or is it from a different model?

Someone has apparently taken the boat and redone it to look like it does now instead of going back original. No that definitely was not a option or a different model.
As previously stated, that boat should look practically identical to the above brochure picture, except it could be one of several other color combos. Probably, somewhere under the paint/gelcoat????? and graphics will be the original color/colors. The interior is not original nor a option, but something someone did to match the exterior or visa versa. Do you have any paperwork or history of the boat.

No this was never an option on the 1980. The previous owner(s) just decided to part ways with the original beauty of the boat....
Lucky for you, you will have a blank canvas to work with. Keep the original white hull and deck. Just decide on a color for the stripe. All stars and lettering should be white as well. The stripe can be solid or metalfalke. I will need an expert on here, but I believe original color options for the stripe would include:
-Red
-Green
-Blue
-Black
-Yellow

Is there currently anyone selling 1980 Stars and Stripes Decals?
ski_king
04-05-2009, 07:17 AM
For the decals, first check with Jim at Bay Area Water Sports. He bought all the old decal inventory from MasterCraft.
If he dosnt have what you need, there is somebody on Ebay selling decal kits.

antman dont think your going to find any original covers for the seats, try a local upholsterer, as for the engine cover i'm prety sure originally the cover on that model was just fibre glass so the stars would have just been decals, i had my upholstery done a few years ago cost i think about £400 for the lot with new foam including the back seat.
A lot depends on the vinyl that you want.
good luck

So not all of the early boats were metalflake?
ski_king

My guess is that under that paint, you will find a abused and faded metalflake stripe.

I agree. That's what most people do when they can't bring back the metalflake. Just paint over it.
How does it RUN?
Antman
04-06-2009, 05:04 PM
It runs like a dream, The engine has been totally re-built and re-bored slightly. It was 5.7 ltr I think its more like 6 ltr now, Just a few treakes to the interior and paintwork then were off and running
I am also looking for a tower and perhaps a canopy, Do you know any?

There is a a Thread right now about a guy who put a tower on an older Mastercraft. I would check it out before you do anything. Positive's and Negative's.

I believe that is a standard 1:1 box. Original to the boat. Is the red metalflake or not?
Antman

I dont see a flake in the paint, but its certainly red...After we removed the leather on the engine cover and removed the glued???? foam, the above picture is what we found

Welcome to the show, nice boat BTW....The engine appears to be a 351 Windsor (Ford) Pleasure craft marine PCM, I think is the 240 hp It's similar to mine, the Transmission is the 1.1 if i was to guess, but I'm no expert, just glad you found a jewel under that paint, hopefully you can restore it IMO, get a skylon, don't do a tower on it...my 2 cents....keep it classic...good luck with it, shortly some one else will ring with more info for you....

Ok, now you know the orginal colors were red stripe on white. It is still possible the side stripes were metalflake. The box has the same texture as the deck and I don't know if they flaked that stripe.

The deck is smooth but the engine cover is slightly contoured, Im not sure the wet deck is original! Ill take pics tomorrow. We have stipped the craft completely now and are just finishing up the wiring.. We have changed all the hoses including the fuel pipe, We are not gonna resrpay the craft until winter, we want it on the water as soon as pos, The red/white S&S decals are on there way from the US as we speak and i hope will arrive in the UK for next week. The following weekend we sould have some action shots....Also we have recovered two of the seats in our own leatherette material, Not ideal but will do until we source original upholstery, we are looking at a bimini, its a nice look.. Also we are running cable for a radio. Whats a SKYLON ?

antman
Skylon is a brand name for a high pole, instead of a tower you mount a skylon over your ski pole attached with a wire/ratchet to front of the boat, easily removable in two minutes, where you skiing, if any riders are out this weekend i'm sure you will see a boat with the high pole on, if they dont have a tower they usually have the high pole.

Youre boat also has wooden stringers,I would check the pylon and engine mounts just to be safe.
