I turned on every damn light and ran every appliance in my house. Space heaters, toaster and blenders all were on for an hour straight. Every TV. The washer and ELECTRIC dryer...

All the green earth coolers think they are making a difference. They have no idea how gullible and have no sense of the insignificant difference this makes. Its almost immeasurable.

Ummm..."green earth cooler" here. You can relax, we are not gullible, we are well aware that the hour itself has little impact.

Now this may be a tad sophisticated for you to grasp whilst you are frying squirrels, but the idea is to raise awareness, and it is a symbolic act.

The only thing that has been dubunked, is your lot's ability to grasp science. Or perhaps more accurately, your ability to deny overwhelming scientific evidence. (see Copenhagen Conference etc.)

The evidence has grown consistently and immensely since IPCC 4, and if your had cared to investigate with anything other than inherent bias and politically driven directive, you would know that.

I sense some stereotyping going on in this thread. Whom are you including in his lot's? People tend to get very angry when you bring in some sort of how you are higher the rest of us common folks on smarts list. That kind of talk turns what could be a good debate into a personal attack.

That is just silly, the only politically driven objective is the old global warming now know as climate change.

You refuse to see the tide has turned and no one is listening to the "consensus" crowd anymore. The so called science was flawed from the beginning to pursue a political end. Have you not seen the 1,000's of respected scientists that have turned their backs on the

Have you not seen the 1,000's of respected scientists that have turned their backs on the
foolish sky is falling nuts.

No. In fact, the 2500 climate scientists at Copenhagen, have shown that the studies since IPCC 4 have become significantly more concerning and that the state of climate modeling at the time of IPCC 4 (report released in 2007, data up until 2005) has greatly underestimated the likely effects of climate change.

Further, not one of the national academies of science nor any leading climate scientists, nor any of the signatories to IPCC 4, nor any of the signatories to the G8 climate statement has "turned their back" on anything.

See, what makes your statements so ill advised, is that there isn't a shred of truth to them. You would think that if "1,000's of respected scientists that have turned their backs on the foolish sky is falling nuts", that one of the nations governments in the G8, would declare their relief that billions of dollars don't need to be spent..phew.

On cue, you will now rebutt as you usually do, by either attacking me (Maristar particularly likes this strategy), or somehow equate being Canadian with being a socialist so don't listen to him (this where TX-X30 comes in), or by quoting someone from a right wing think tank (Heartland Institute, Friends of Science, American Enterprise Institue) who has virtually no science background nor education in the field, and more often than not receives funding from the oil industry.

I will save you the trouble, because your best argument is that of Richard Linz from MIT. He actually is a climate scientist, he is educated in the field. Usually, someone finds an old article where he denies the existence of AGW..he now states publicly that global warming exists, that it is caused by human activity, but that the effects won't be that great.

Beyond that there isn't much to say. I would pay particular attention to the Climate Staement of the G8...a joint declaration on the realities of global warming signed by the heads of the chief scientific advisors for all the G8 countries (China, Canada, Brazil, Russia, United States, Japan, Italy, India, Germany). See link below:

For those interested here are some links to sites where they discuss and accumulate science rather than opinion:

If everyone had observed the "earth hour" and shut off all of their electronics, it would have wrecked havoc on the power grid. and like already stated, it really wouldn't have acomplished a whole lot. That said, I also understand the other side of the argument, that it is not actually for the power savings, but more for the attention it brings to other issues (actually issues or not). But if that was actually the main point to it, then im pretty sure that there are many other ways that would bring more attention to those issues and actually accomplish something.

And once man came to have more physical information about his planet he accepted the fact that the earth is round.

Now, that didn't stop people who were offended by this finding from denying the truth. Just as you disregard the science with regard to global warming.

As for the video link put up by TX-X30...TX, you really need to do some research prior to posting. That video has been indicted by scientists around the world, and more importantly by two of the scientists in that very film:

Carl Wunsch:

Carl Wunsch, professor of Physical Oceanography at MIT, is featured in the Channel 4 version of the programme. Afterwards he said that he was "completely misrepresented" in the film and had been "totally misled" when he agreed to be interviewed.[34][7] He called the film "grossly distorted" and "as close to pure propaganda as anything since World War Two."[35] Wunsch was reported to have threatened legal action[35] and lodged a complaint with Ofcom. He also raised objections as to how his interview material was used:

"In the part of The Great Climate Change Swindle where I am describing the fact that the ocean tends to expel carbon dioxide where it is warm, and to absorb it where it is cold, my intent was to explain that warming the ocean could be dangerous—because it is such a gigantic reservoir of carbon. By its placement in the film, it appears that I am saying that since carbon dioxide exists in the ocean in such large quantities, human influence must not be very important—diametrically opposite to the point I was making—which is that global warming is both real and threatening."[7]

Eigil Friis-Christensen

Eigil Friis-Christensen's research was used to support claims about the influence of solar activity on climate, both in the programme and Durkin's subsequent defence of it. Friis-Christensen, with environmental Research Fellow Nathan Rive, criticised the way the solar data were used:

"We have concerns regarding the use of a graph featured in the documentary titled ‘Temp & Solar Activity 400 Years’. Firstly, we have reason to believe that parts of the graph were made up of fabricated data that were presented as genuine. The inclusion of the artificial data is both misleading and pointless. Secondly, although the narrator commentary during the presentation of the graph is consistent with the conclusions of the paper from which the figure originates, it incorrectly rules out a contribution by anthropogenic greenhouse gases to 20th century global warming.[8]"

In response to a question from The Independent as to whether the programme was scientifically accurate, Friis-Christensen said: "No, I think several points were not explained in the way that I, as a scientist, would have explained them ... it is obvious it's not accurate."

Following Eigil Friis-Christensen's criticism of the ‘Temp & Solar Activity 400 Years’ graph used in the programme (for perfectly matching the lines in the 100 years 1610-1710 where data did not in fact exist in the original), Durkin emailed Friis-Christensen to thank him for highlighting the error: "it is an annoying mistake which all of us missed and is being fixed for all future transmissions of the film. It doesn't alter our argument".[42]

The other reference was a very old documentary from CBC; however, it makes no mention of a much more current CBC documentary:

The Denial Machine: which details how many of the characters involved with The Heartland Institute, and The Friends of Science such as Fred Singer, and Tim Ball have not only received significant funding from the oil industry but previously were involved in presenting "science" that smoking cigarettes was safe, and that tobacco didn't cause cancer. At that time they were heavily funded by the tobacco industry.

As far as the dollars leaving they have been for a long time because we refuse to use our resources properly.

You are exactly right TX, we have NOT been using our resources properly. We have the potential to create all the energy we need right here in our lower 48. The combination of wind, solar, wave action, and geothermal would be enough to shut down every coal and natural gas power plant in the country. And then we should stop importing goods from other countries so our manufacturing base thrives within our borders... in fact, lets close our borders too. No more immigration messing up our communities with funny speaking people, and those little asian kids that take all the top educational spots. We could build a wall...a GREAT BIG WALL!! Oh think how glorious it will be in our windy wavey free power island nation. Lets put a cover on it too, something in a lexan or plexiglass! Just up the road from here in the NC Foothills is 100's of chicken farms supplying chickens to Tyson Foods, that has all this chicken manure going in the landfills. A company that takes chicken manure and burns it to generate electricity for a fraction of the cost of conventional hydroelectric and steam generated power wants to build a plant to generate electricity for the region, creating jobs both in construction of the plant and to operate the plant, but the people in the community won't allow it.

Indictment of my position? You quoted me, yet not once of this thread have I revealed my position. Take a deep breath, dude. ;)

But...since you asked...my position (as a scientist engaged daily and actively publishing in related areas) is that we have no way of proving man's contribution to the galactic energy balance at this point in time. We have only been taking data for a small sample of time in a much larger thermal cycle and with very large forcing functions. Some of those who disagree with you are not ignoring....they are just holding off before casting judgment. The data are plentiful, but not enough yet to forfeit the null hypothesis. Again, deep breath please.

So...Jorski...do you ski or board? When do you plan to get out on the water this year?

I have been a member here longer than you have, I have made 600 posts; at least 500 of them have been about boats. No, no info on the "carb setting on a 351", don't have one, and I don't know anything about it. Plenty of posts about gelcoat, LT-1 engine stuff, rubrail installation, waterskiing instruction/information.

As usual, why would I expect that you wouldn't let facts get in the way. For the record, why don't you show me where I called your President a "lying pig". I'll save you some time, you won't be able to find it, because it never happened.

If you want to know about being ignorant and rude, I suggest that you read your own posts. You resort to name calling as soon as you don't like what someone has to say.

You put in your own profile on this site that you are a "a liberal hater". Hate is strong language my friend; but, it does fit with your posts.

Anyhow, I suspect that you think that you are doing some kind of service, to the conservative cause or something...it's pretty funny, you write like some kind of Rush Limbaugh wannabe. If you think that makes you smart, well good for you.

In the end, you must be driven by insecurity. Too bad for you.

Have to love the old fairness doctrine, anyone that doesn't believe what we do should not be heard. That sounds like Berlin in the 30's or the USSR was before that. Is that really what liberals want in this country a media that never questions the people the believe in and try to silence anyone that disagrees??

correct me if i'm wrong but didn't you only cite one station as an example? So one could easily say "You make my point better than I could. one station that does not regurgitate the news as conservatives want and it becomes a vendetta of hatred with the Red Kool aid drinkers. In all fairness, all news is biased one way or another. If people view one news station as the truth then that's their lookout. It's down to the individual to filter through all the BS that we're thrown on TV. News has now become less informative and more entertainment. NBC, Fox whoever... it's all garbage since so many people behind the scenes have hidden (or not) agendas.

Then why the hatred for a divergence of opinion?? Baffles me how people can get their news from CNN, NBC and the new york times and believe they are somehow informed.

What is sad is we now have a president that was elected by a media machine that was fawning over the guy for two years and refused to print or broadcast anything negative about the guy.

That is simply the sad truth, and now all I hear is what his wife is going to wear next.

What are you on, and where can I get some? If the media were dominated by Conservatives, Obama would never have won. The media made him into a Messiah and he'll take a huge hit if he doesn't live up to their claims. Yea I know, we NEVER heard what Nancy Reagan was doing during the 80's.

Simple truth is, there are a hand-full of companies that own all the news stations. Most of them are donors to the republican party and therefore we have the slanted news we have. The reality of the situation is, you have to work to get the facts and then make your own conclusion but most americans are too lazy to do this because they like to have everything spoon-fed to them without thinking.

There are all kinds of studies out there, most show a very similar outcome. I think a very telling fact come from the man that worked in there for 40 years. His name slips my mind he has written several books about what goes on in these news rooms.

MSNBC.com identified 143 journalists who made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign, according to the public records of the Federal Election Commission. Most of the newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 16 gave to Republicans. Two gave to both parties.

A lot of industries are being "demonized".

Americans from all walks of life are directly employed by these companies. Big Oil, Big Retail, Big Coffee..... (whatabout Big Government?) And untold more have business that supply those companies. If you hold mutual funds, what are the odds you have Big Oil, Big Retail, Big Pharma, Big Bank within your holdings? Pretty good! What do you think will happen to your holdings if those industries are crushed in the machine?

None of these things happen in a vacuum - except in the case of politicians - whose income, retirement, benefits do NOT depend on the performance of companies and investments. Makes it much easier for them to make such decisions on behalf of those who voted for them!

When market forces move industry and markets from one type of technology to another, from one product to another, companies shift investment, change strategy, invest & divest. Investors can watch the trends, adjust their portfolios, and support the entrepeneurs and companies most likely to succeed. When government stomps on market forces and forces a change, it won't just be the CEO's of the targeted "Big" industry that are hurting - it will hurt the employees, investors, and all of the related businesses as well.

Alright, enough rant. Time to head for a cold brew..... Have a good weekend TTers :D

When government stomps on market forces and forces a change, it won't just be the CEO's of the targeted "Big" industry that are hurting - it will hurt the employees, investors, and all of the related businesses as well.

Sounds a lot like the justifications for repeal of Glass-Steagall Act; which deregulated the big banks and wall street. This is basically what got us into our current economic mess...The article below is, I kid you not from 10 years ago, and if you read it you will see that there were plenty of boneheads from both sides of the political spectrum, as well as some with foresight:

''Today Congress voted to update the rules that have governed financial services since the Great Depression and replace them with a system for the 21st century,'' Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers said. ''This historic legislation will better enable American companies to compete in the new economy.''

The decision to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 provoked dire warnings from a handful of dissenters that the deregulation of Wall Street would someday wreak havoc on the nation's financial system. ...

''The world changes, and we have to change with it,'' said Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, who wrote the law that will bear his name along with the two other main Republican sponsors, Representative Jim Leach of Iowa and Representative Thomas J. Bliley Jr. of Virginia. ''We have a new century coming, and we have an opportunity to dominate that century the same way we dominated this century. Glass-Steagall, in the midst of the Great Depression, came at a time when the thinking was that the government was the answer. In this era of economic prosperity, we have decided that freedom is the answer.''

In the House debate, Mr. Leach said, ''This is a historic day. The landscape for delivery of financial services will now surely shift.''...

The opponents of the measure gloomily predicted that by unshackling banks and enabling them to move more freely into new kinds of financial activities, the new law could lead to an economic crisis down the road when the marketplace is no longer growing briskly.

''I think we will look back in 10 years' time and say we should not have done this but we did because we forgot the lessons of the past, and that that which is true in the 1930's is true in 2010,'' said Senator Byron L. Dorgan, Democrat of North Dakota. ''I wasn't around during the 1930's or the debate over Glass-Steagall. But I was here in the early 1980's when it was decided to allow the expansion of savings and loans. We have now decided in the name of modernization to forget the lessons of the past, of safety and of soundness.''

Senator Paul Wellstone, Democrat of Minnesota, said that Congress had ''seemed determined to unlearn the lessons from our past mistakes.''

''Scores of banks failed in the Great Depression as a result of unsound banking practices, and their failure only deepened the crisis,'' Mr. Wellstone said. ''Glass-Steagall was intended to protect our financial system by insulating commercial banking from other forms of risk. It was one of several stabilizers designed to keep a similar tragedy from recurring. Now Congress is about to repeal that economic stabilizer without putting any comparable safeguard in its place.''

Supporters of the legislation rejected those arguments. They responded that historians and economists have concluded that the Glass-Steagall Act was not the correct response to the banking crisis because it was the failure of the Federal Reserve in carrying out monetary policy, not speculation in the stock market, that caused the collapse of 11,000 banks. If anything, the supporters said, the new law will give financial companies the ability to diversify and therefore reduce their risks. The new law, they said, will also give regulators new tools to supervise shaky institutions.

''The concerns that we will have a meltdown like 1929 are dramatically overblown,'' said Senator Bob Kerrey, Democrat of Nebraska.

There are 7000 plus members here but only about 6000 different users.

Tina is someone in drag trying to get your goat and it is working.....
