View Full Version : Transmission question...

I think this is normal but since this is my first direct drive boat, I just want to make sure. When I put the boat in reverse there is a whining (gear) type noise, like a blower or gear drive on a car. It doesn't make this noise when I put it in forward gear, just in reverse...is this normal?

And, has anyone used the rubber coupling on the prop shaft instead of the solid coupling? I was thinking about getting one of these when I repack the stuffing box.

Juju :o

Yes, it is normal. My 94 whines in reverse also.

It's so you'll know your in reverse.

I thought so, it sounded like it was a normal thing, but I wanted to be sure...

Welcome. Perfectly normal. Haven't tried the dripless seal (assuming that's what you're talking about). There have been good reports on them compared to the wax packing though.

It's the transmission that whines... And every inboard I've driven does this a bit. Perfectly normal.

As for the dripless seal (PSS). A previous owner put one on mine, but not having to deal with a stuffing box is great! And others have described the retrofit process and it seems very straight forward. Do a search of this board for PSS and you should come up with some information.

I put a PSS on my '95 PS190. Straight forward installation. Biggest pain besides removing the driveshaft coupler from the shaft is re-aligning the engine/shaft back up when you're done.

Forgot to mention - it sure is nice to not ever have to worry about it. Been approx 4, going on 5 years now.
