Anyone have any tips on where to look for a summer trip to the beach on the right side of the country? We're trying to see if we can find something closer than myrtle beach or hilton head area. Long drive with 2 little ones. Any Virginia Beach experience? Or something in that area.

Looking to be able to have clean, friendly beaches to play with 2 kids under 4 and maybe some other side activities. Also want the water to be warm enough to play in some. Thinking July / August. Went to Fripp Island last year, which was great, but a long drive from MI.

Thanks.

Nags Head, NC is a great place to go. Lots of history there, lighthouses and such. Jockeys ridge (highest sand dune on US Atlantic IIRC) is fun for the kids. Puttputt and such. been going there since I was a kid.

Nags Head/Outer Banks probably is best, but Virginia Beach is nice too and a couple hours closer. Virginia Beach is a city with a lot more things to do, including visiting Norfolk if you're into Navy stuff (they used to give ship tours at the base, not sure if they still do that since 9/11 though). But if you want a pure beach vacation and fewer crowds, the Outer Banks would be the best place that I know of.

I wouldn't go farther North than Virginia Beach as I don't think the beaches and water are as clean at the northern locations.

3 for nags head, and the trip is easy now 4 lane most of the way.

Just don't go near Kitty Hawk, there's crazy people down there from Ohio with those fancy winged things that think they can fly!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_19_2.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSfox000)
