View Full Version : Full or Mini tower for 197

Looking for advice...I have been searching through the archives and the only negatives I can find on the mini is the low clearance (bumping head).

Anybody got some experiences or advice to share?

I'm 5'-10" and the mini tower is fine as long as it doesn't have speakers or lights on it.

But I haven't spent alot of time in a boat that has one either.

My personal experience and opinions.

Mini tower hands down on a 197. The full tower looks much too tall and cumbersome. The bimini is too high on a full tower, rendering it useless.

The mini tower does pose a clearance problem, however, the bimini would be sitting at the same height whether there was or was not a tower, so what's the issue?

My '05 had the mini.

I loved watching buddies smash their heads when they stood up from the observers seat.:D Mitch from the forum almost knocked himself out.:D:D

They have changed the newer towers so that the horizontal section is further back so that when you stand up from the driver or observer seat you don't hit your head. The problem with that is that you then have to duck to wak to the back of the boat.

I do agree with Cam that the mini looks much better on a 197 than a full.

That's a good point about the bimini height...I never thought of that. I definitely like the looks of the mini over the full but haven't been in a boat with either so my experience is zero.

Mine is a 2002 197 and am probably going to go with the New dimensions either full or mini...

Keep in mind that the full towers will interfere with shortline slalom skiing as well.

I was just about to ask for a pic of the mini with a bimini...

I am definitely leaning mini...I am going to think it over a few days.

Sweet looking boat by the way...

My full tower mounts the same as the N.D. mini he is looking at.

Incorrect.

The Full size ND and the Mini Tower have the same mounts... they will not interfere with shortline.

The NEW style full size tower will interfere with shortline, while the mini will not. However, I do not think that Mgurley wants to put a new style $7,000 tower on his boat! :D

Admittedly I didn't read the OP very closely.:o

I have the full tower, and love it. If your going to put anything on it, I think it would make sense to get the full. I have to duck a bit to get under my speakers, and couldn't imagine what it would be like if I had less headroom.

Of course if your using the tower for wakeboarding or whatever, and really don't want to have it "cluttered up" with speakers, lights, rocket launchers, luggage racks, and the like then, by all means... go with the squatty one.

Still thinking about adding ND tower to mine, especially since I learned in another thread that dealers don't want used 197's :D

On the new towers, I wonder if anyone knows exactly how deep into shortline you have to get before the rope swipes it. In looking around at TT boats for sale, I've seen several with the full tower, seems very very odd..... Did they get it just for resale, and run the boat with the tower OFF for most of the year?

Are you buying the tower for looks of for pulling wakeboarders? The difference in height of the two will make a big difference to the boarders you're pulling with that 197. Go big if you're gonna board, go small if you only want it for looks.

At 28 off on a 214 from what I've read. I'm not good enough to ski there, so I don't know personally.

But I plan to pull some at that length this May to find out. Shep....

That 08 TT looks horrible with that full tower. Mini if you have to have one and IMHO the New Dimension towers look way better than the new style towers especially on 197s.

I agree, I like the look of the mini on my '05 much more than the newer ones. Full or mini.

If you need a cheap removable tower go with the LG tower, JohnE ordered one for his new 214 8p

Have you purchased the tower yet? I have a brand new 2004 MasterCraft OEM mini for sale here at MasterCraft of Charlotte. It is the same exact style as the ND tower but with the MasterCraft board rack mounts.OEM in this case is the better option. Let me know.

I can't say enough about NDT great people to deal with a 100% hassle free transaction and the tower looks great. We also took the opportunity to visit Cades Cove while the tower was being installed. Here are some pics...hopefully I'll have some of it in the water soon looks like great weather ahead for us.

Doesn't matter if its mini or full size, unless you have a 9 ft plus door, it aint gonna fit without folding it. They are easy to fold.

Andyg
07-15-2010, 11:21 PM
You will need a 9ft tall garage door for it to clear a mini tower. I installed a 9ft door on my garage so I didn't have to fold the mini tower down to get it in. I have about 3-4 inches of clearance between the light on the mini tower and the garage door. In the attached picture you can see my third stall that is 9ft tall and the main garage door that is 7ft tall.

That would be nice! but probably not a big deal to fold either it sounds like. I have a newer garage with an 8 foot door, so probably won't be changing that to a 9 footer anytime soon.
