My ski partner is considering purchasing a 2006 PS 197. Mastercraft has had some great success with their hulls, and some marginal success with others. I think 1993 was one of the best, and 1998 was marginal at best. Does anyone have any experience with the 2006 hull on the PS197, and how does it compare to other PS hulls, including the 2008 or 2009? The purpose of this boat is pure waterskiing. He currently has a Malibu Sportster. Thoughts?

From 03 to 09 the hulls are all the same.

In 06 they made a rudder upgrade for handling.

In 09 they changed the vinyl scheme alittle.

The 06' 197 hull has been in existence since 2001 or 2002. It is proven and well accepted as one of the best. As 03 35th mentioned, there was a change in rudders between 05 and 06. Depends if you are looking at Tournament Team 197's as some of the changes in that limited edition typically comes a year earlier than in production models.

There was also a change around 2003 with the hook in the bottom of transom. They added a slight hook to bottom of stern to improve the wake slightly in that year.

Otherwise, the 01 to current 197 hull is outstanding and has seen little change.

I have a 2005 TT 197. I think it has a very good slalom wake. What were the differences in the rudder between 05 and 06 and how did they affect handling?

I think there was a little undocumented weight loss in the bow in 2007. But the hull is unchanged from 02 TT/03 Production on.

I had an '05 that I bought used and it already had the 06 rudder upgrade. My understanding is the the 06 rudder makes the boat handle like it is on rails. (It did). But I haven't driven one with the earlier rudder to have a comparison.

My 06 197 has IMO a fantastic wake, power enough to pull stumps (though I haven't), and handles like it's on a track. Even though it's for sale, I kinda don't want to lose it...of course the way things are going, in twelve years I won't owe anything on it so that would be cool. Now I just need to figure a way to keep pulling two boat payments a month in an environment that I can only use it six months a year.

Is is as simple as purchasing the 2006 rudder and changing it out or are other changes necessary?

If you can change the rudder, that's all that's required. I've driven and skied both and the 06 rudder is a very nice improvement both from the driver's and skier's perspective.
