View Full Version : Swing-away tongue modification question...

Hey guys,
I'm just curious if there's anyone out there who's modded their trailer to the swing-away hitch design? I have a 2000 X-Star with the single axle trailer w/ breaks and was just curious if this was even possible with the trailer design and breaks and all. I'd love to be able to do it to save garage space but figured the chances of it be a possiblity were slim.

Sure its possible. Any good weld shop should be able to hook you up. You basically need either a heavy duty commercial hinge, or a machinist to fab you one. Then a pin or bolt plate to lock it straight. Then you'll need to extend your brake and possibly your electrical lines to compensate for the swing.
My old hallett had a modified tongue and it worked great.

I modified the tongue on mine that was already a swing away. Needed to add length because my truck camper over hangs the box by about 20". All i did was install another piece of break line to match the length from the added tongue. Had a local welder that trust with anything fab up the new piece. Removed the origional swing portion of the tongue, bolted the new piece to it with the extra brake line and attached to the pivot point on the trailer. Then added some brake fluid and blead air out of the brake system. Only took about an hour to do once I had all the parts needed. If you can make sure the welder knows what he is doing and gets a tight fit on the pivot point so no damage will occur during travel with too much play.

Extreme just merged with another West Coast trailer manufacturer, so their website is under construction.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just need to take some measurements when I get the boat out of storage. I came across a fulton conversion kit in the westmarine catalog ($130 or so). Anyone familiar with this kit? Seems pretty heavy-duty, I believe its a bolt on though (which would probably be easier for me).
