View Full Version : Tower Speaker Help!

I fitted my extended pylon on my 1983 Stars and Stripes with Polk DB tower speakers last year and loved them until one of them blew. I bought a pair of JL 7.7 with the sport grill (EBAY) for this year because I thought they were one of the best and now I'm having second thoughts. I haven't tried them out yet as they are still in the box but I am hearing everyone talk about Wetsounds. I am looking for two tower speakers that are really really really loud. I don't want to completely bust my bank but I can resell these JL's on ebay if someone has any better options for me. Can someone tell me how the JL's sound? Thanks, Cody

The JL's are pretty decent and I have heard multiple Wetsounds setups as well as I have owned a couple of NVS setups. (www.nvs1.net). You should put a proper amp to them and see how you like them. They will not be as loud as a pair of Pro 80's from Wetsounds, but the quality of the JL is above reproach.
If you take them out of the box and mount them up once, I fail to see how that would diminish your resale, so I would do that first and see how they sound. I am sure you would put them on ebay right now and say they have never even been listened to, but I wouldn't believe you now, so I won't believe you later, if you know what I mean. Unless you are a dealer and have access to some sort of warranty, I don't think your resale will change if you listen to them once or twice and see what you think.

How much would I expect to pay for used wet sounds speakers.. I guess the Pro 80 or Pro 60. Also.. Can someone tell me what amp would be good to power the JL's with and how I should wire them. I have an Infinity Amp that is 111x4. I used it for the Polks. Thanks, Cody

The Pro 60 msrp is 850 and the Pro80 msrp is 1000. You should be able to get them used for 600-800 but I wouldn't buy used speakers personally, even wet sounds. They arn't worth the money if they are blown. If they are on a friends boat and sound good that would be different.

I'm probably just going to stick with the JL's because they are new and I already have them, not to mention that alot of people say they are a really good speaker. I still dont really know how I should power them so if anybody wants to share their setup, it would be appreciated.

I have four JL tower speakers powered by an Alpine PDX 2.150, four 7.7 and two 6.5 JL in the hull driven by an Alpine PDX 4.150, and three 10" subs (Two Treo, and one Memphis Audio) driven by an Alpine PDX 1000U.
Sounds pretty good.
