View Full Version : Which head unit???

I need a head unit and know nothing about them other than the features that I want.

Priorities are:
* 6 channel preamp output and sub preamp output
* Sirus/XM compatible
* CD player
* IPod connectivity fast and good quality, will use IPod to control, not the head unit (head will be mounted in the glove box and will not be convenient to access)
* Remote for radio and volume.

The setup will be a Wetsounds Syn 4 pushing four wetsound 650s and a Wetsounds Syn Micro pushing a Wetsounds 10 sub.

Any advise will be appreciated.

Do the CMD5 and CMD6 both have 3 sets of outputs, plus one for a sub? What about a CMD4?

to be honest i'm not too sure... i've got the CMD4 now and i'm upgrading and by all accounts it will be a simple plug and play... it says there's a 6ch output and i don't know about the sub output to be honest...

i would look into the Alipine marine line... they now offer hard wired remotes. I like alpine because they are tough. nothing sucks worse than having your stereo go down when you are on vacation.

You may have trouble finding decks with 6 channels of pre-out, but this one might work http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=iDA-X100M

I've decided on the Pioneer P6000UB. It's not marine grade but it will be in the glove box and I'm not to worried about it. Pioneer does make a marine remote which I'll incorporate. For the money I don't think this head can be beat. Check out the specs at the link below.

Warning on the Pioneer wired remotes. Do a search for past threads where this has been discussed. They have a tendency to short out when mounted on the transom. I myself went through 2 of them in 1 year. They aren't very water proof. In one of the threads someone talked about using silicone on the remote to make it more water proof. Just wanted to give you the heads up.

as long as its not a kenwood remote... personal experience on a friend's boat... the remote beside the driver will not work unless the radio volume is below 22... makes no sense to me but what a piece of crap...

I wouldn't go this route. Its not a very permenant solution and your bound to have issues. Do you listen to CDs?

I have been, but I am looking at upgrading my XMD (from 2002) to get something with an aux input, or maybe even USB. I have amps on my speakers, and for my tower speakers, but would like to add a sub. Where does MC mount the factory sub on 197's?

Regarding CD's, I will use the iPod 90% of the time. All of my CD's will be imported into iTunes. The CD player will be used when a buddy brings along one.

Regarding a permanent solution, I've talked to guys who use non-marine versions and guys with marine versions and I find that the marine versions are no more reliable than the non marine version. My logic is that at $200 its really no big deal if it dies on me.
