I need some pictures of the storage behind the observer's seat. Any measurements, pictures, etc. that you can give would be great. I am trying to plan for a few upgrades, but need to see the layout of the area, so I can get some idea of the space I have under there.

Thanks in advance!

Trying to figure out how to cram 3 amps, a capacitor and an additional battery under there while still having enough room for fenders and life jackets. :o

About 300 miles.... it will be coming home obviously when I start the work, but for now it is tucked away at the river. :(

Ah, I guess I take for granted my boat is in storage about 7 miles from my house where I can get to it any time I want.

3 amps?!?!? Wow, you playing music for the entire bay??

Is there room under the drivers helm to hang any amps?

Having the boat 7 miles from the house would be nice until I had to use it! 8p It is very nice to get in the car on Friday night and not have to drag the boat 300 miles. Without the boat I can get out to the river in about 4 hours.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Do the sub amp under the driver's dash and then the tower amp and cockpit amp under the observer's seat.

That works.

I think am going to drive out to the river this weekend with some cardboard and a tape measure to draw up some templates of what I want to do. At least I can build the amp rack and have an idea of what I want to do while the boat is away, that way when I get the boat home, I can just worry about the wiring of everything.

Is that an 8 hour round trip? If so, someone must have a 197 that can make some templates for you. Cheaper to have someone send them than pay for gas. Even if you paid for overnight shipping.

If it helps the 2 JL amps (6 channel and mono) that were in my 197 were mounted to the right "wall" under the observer seat.

Good luck.

Sodar,
My 04 197 is about 30 feet away from me tucked away for the winter under her cover in the garage. I can take all the dimensions you want, and if you need lots of pictures. Give me the specifics you are looking for, and I can probably save you that 8 hour drive.

I know this is not much, but it was on the harddrive, so its a start. I can get you specific dimensions of the side wall, or the overall height and depth. Just say the word and I will try to be your remote eyes and tape measure. :)

Sodar

I have the specific dimensions via a very gracious member (Thanks Matt!)

What I am worried about and have not yet seen is how the heater is going to play into this mess. I know that it is mounted on the "wall" that is the reverse side of the front seat, but I need to see if it is too close to the side "wall" to allow for me to mount an amp tucked in the back corner.

Thanks for any help!

Cool. Good luck with the upgrade. Let me know if you need any more info later since the boat is always calling me to take off the cover anyway. :D

Under the observers seat on the 197. Three Amps, one 12" sub.

What kind of amps are those? Clarions? They look thinner than the JL's

Keep that heater core away from your amps. It will spring a leak at some point.

Don't know if they're considered worth a flip, but those little Alpine PDX-5 amps are really compact and low heat.

Justjamie how does that sub fire, into the back of the seatback??? I know where my wife would be sitting if so.

Kath always sits in that seat when she is in my boat. She loves the 10" JL under her pooper.

sodarski, there is already a hole for your new free air JL 10" sub under the drivers dash....
You'll need a million watts driving it, but the location is perfect.

Here is three amps and the sirius tuner all mounted on the walls of the observer side storage in the 197

Plenty and will sound great. have you checked what you need for alt. output for the new stuff?? Your alt. is a 70 or 90 amp?? Splurge and get a big AGM battery for the stereo.

I just bought 2 Optima D34M batteries, but was hoping I would not need to do anything with the alternator. Think I am going to need to upgrade that too?

What is in the boat? It was 3 years ago but I believe I added all the amp hr. draw from my stuff to calculate how much I needed from my alt. I know the pros on here could explain it better. I have read if your drawing too much it can fry the alt. I think I found the draw rates for my amps on the JL site but again 3 years and a couple of cases of beer later. Let me know I think I still have all my old notes and I do have info on exact replacement marine alts. at various outputs.

I guess I need to figure this out.

When I am done, I will have:

a JL Audio M1700

a JL Audio M2250

a JL Audio M6600

2 Optima D34M Batteries on an isolator like what Diesel had in his thread.

I am not thinking my draw will be even close to yours, but I have been wrong before!

How'd you mount your amps to the side wall like that, without punching through ? Did you glue plastic plates under the carpet to drill into? Just curious, will be adding an amp to mine this spring.

Can anyone tell me if this bad boy (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02850131000P?mv=rr) will fit in the battery compartment on a 197?

Here are the dimensions:

Height: 9-1/2 in.
Width: 6-4/5 in.
Length: 13 in.

If the big one does not fit, does this (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02850134000P?mv=rr):

Height: 7-9/10 in.
Width: 6-4/5 in.
Length: 10-9/10 in.

I am thinking of forgoing the dual battery for the time being and just adding this. I never listen to the stereo for more than 30 minutes or so when the boat is not running, so I am thinking of saying fuggit and seeing how I do with 1 battery.

IIRC, the side wall has a layer of the starboard between the carpet and the fiberglass. Check yours to be sure, but that area in the walkthru is structural, so it's beefy. (It's a MasterCraft dammit!)

The area on the backside of the bow seating area was not as thick. I wasn't worried with the screws breaking thru up there because the cushioned backrests cover all that area quite well (I still don't think the screws broke thru though)

oh and kids.......... Don't forget the MC left a nice tunnel for you which runs under the ice chest from that amp area over to the driver's footboard area. CHECK IT OUT

Any updated stereo pics!!!! I am currently in the process of phase 3 of my boat stereo. I am not doing the work (as I could be tim the tool man taylor) myself. I am always trying to figure out how to get more sound out of the minimal space in the 197..:D

I misplaced my camera with all my pics on it. I actually think I left it up under the driver's dash. When I get the camera back, I will post some pics showing what I have done so far. To follow the progress, I will be posting them here. (http://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=28992)
