You are correct. There are caves in the KC area that you can pay to store your boat or whatever else you want in there.

There are many old limestone mines in this area that are used for storage of cars, boats motorhomes etc.
MarkP, keeps/kept his MC in one locally (not sure if he still has his MC, he may have traded it for a mountain bike by now)

What about insurance? There are always freak storys about things like this where the walls "cave" in... Is this an "at your own risk" storage set up?

well as far as insurance, i have no idea, but Ive never heard of any of the "caves" around here caving in. I know there are a lot of businesses that use the caves for storage. There is even a 5 and 10k race in one. I have participated in that before, you might be able to search for it, its called the groundhog run. they are huge inside! I think I heard somewhere that one of the ones around here has the largest floor space of any single building in the Midwest. there are some stores and stuff in there too. just built walls and sheetrocked them and once your inside, other than the fact that there are no windows you would never know your in a cave.
but basically what you get is a pretty clean, as most of the walls ceilings and floors are painted, and its essentially climate controlled since it stays a constant temperature, i think something around 60 degrees. we have always kept our boats there without issue, some of the caves will even let you do some work on your boat and you can use your power tools and everything with the power lines that they have run in there. very convenient for those of us who don't have room in the garage.

Do they have Captain Cave Man on guard 24/7?

Typically in most storage facilities you need to maintain your own insurance.

The caves are common here in Kansas City area. They are from limestone mining. They are used for all types of things including manufacturing. Yes fork lifts are used in the caves. Ventilation systems keep the air circulating.

People store boats, cars, trucks. Some of the caves are big enough for tractor trailers and some actually have rail lines installed for rail service.

It is actually cheap storage. I needed additional short term space for my company so I store finished goods in the caves for 6 months at about half the cost than standard warehousing. Some are even set up with freezers and cold storage.
