VW in the IRL?????

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/01/19/volkswagen-could-join-irl-in-2011-to-promote-tsi-or-tdi-engines/

Volkswagen could join IRL in 2011 to promote TSI or TDI engines

For the last few years, Honda has had the IndyCar engine supply market all to itself as Toyota and Chevrolet departed to pursue other ventures. At the end of the 2008, the company recommitted to another five years but before that time is up the Honda could have some new competition from an unlikely corner. IRL officials are in talks with a number of potential engine suppliers about the post-2010 rules package. Currently, the rules allow only 3.5L normally-aspirated V8 engines.

The new rules are likely to follow the path of an increasing number of road-going engines with smaller displacements and forced induction. The package being considered reportedly includes allowing 4, 6 or 8 cylinders and turbocharging. One of the most enthusiastic purveyors of small displacement turbo engines is Volkswagen. As VW introduces more of its TSI engines in the U.S. market in the next few years, it may use IRL to promote the technology. It's also possible that the IRL could allow fuels beyond the E100 currently being used. That could mean the addition of E85 and diesel as options. With VW's diesel enthusiasm, that would give the German automaker another reason to go to Indy.

It will be interesting seeing the begininning of the season. There have been a lot of mergers, loss of sponsors, teams going out of business, etc. I bet there will be times when they do jot have 43 cars in the race.

NASCAR NEWS...Jeff Gordon fires his entire pit crew

This announcement followed Gordon's decision to take advantage of the
government's scheme to employ Harlem youngsters.

The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on
how unemployed youths from Harlem were able to remove a set of wheels in
less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Gordon's existing
crew could only do it in 8 seconds with millions of dollars worth of high
tech equipment.
It was thought to be an excellent and bold move by Gordon's management team as most races are won or lost in the pits. However Gordon got more than he bargained for!

At the crew's first practice session, not only was the inexperienced crew able to change all 4 wheels in under 6 seconds, but within 12 seconds they had changed the paint scheme, altered the Vin number, and sold the car to Dale Jr. for 10 cases of Bud, a bag of weed, and some photos of Jeff Gordon's wife in the shower.

I don’t know???

#1 you know a lot more about NASCAR than I,:D IMHO I think it is going to be a tuff year for Tony, I see him in the “also run” cars this year, I don’t see big changes in the top cars this year? it will be Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs and some scattering of wins by RCR and maybe Penske? With the new testing rule IMHO it will keep the big money teams on top, my only hope this year is to see Mark Martin win a championship, it would be the big one finger to Roush, something he could not do for Mark, there is some things to watch this year? Will Jr. do better this year? Can the Dodge teams get there chit together?? How will Casey Mears do? OMHO with his 3 and last team RCR?? And so on….. But I don’t see Tony having a good year?? And seeing him meltdown and having a temper tantrum, with this said I like Tony!!!! what you see is what you get ………………………..

That feels strange? Not agreeing with #1??? Next thing you know  I will get a fiberglass swim step? :( Noooo that will not happen………..:D

http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_11_6.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSfox000) I don't think Tony can do much worse than last year and did a remarkable job of holding his composure IMO, while doing all the things he does and negotiating his new deal behind the scenes. Being a track promoter, World of Outlaw Team owner and now Nextel Cup team owner, among other things and has got his mind off the petty crap and now he's performing as a business owner, not just a hired gun. I think too, Tony being the GM guy he is, and JGR changing to Toyota was like asking Kyle Bush to have a sex change operation! But, we will see by years end. I just hope he doesn't blow it.

I should have bet he would start the first crash; I was surprised how well Stewart did, and how well Newman qualified?? Was it me or were the “TV announcers” were full of more hot air than the past? so true......................:D

Five Drivers Most Likely to Cause a Crash

1. Michael Waltrip: Although he is a two-time Daytona 500 winner, Waltrip seems to find trouble on the track. Starting alongside teammate David Reutimann, who sent Ryan Newman into the wall during Thursday's qualifying race, and Sam Hornish, Jr., this trio could become the "Three Stooges" of the Daytona 500.
2. David Reutimann: See above. Let's make him "Larry" to Waltrip's "Moe."
3. Sam Hornish, Jr.: It's sad that the greatest IndyCar driver of his generation has been relegated to the role of "Shemp," but in his second season as a Sprint Cup driver, Hornish can still be counted on to slide up the track at least once or a twice a race.
4. Joey Logano: At 18, he has youthful exuberance on his side, but not experience. He'll probably try to put the car in a hole in which it doesn't fit, leading to a crash and caution.
5, Scott Speed: Another rookie driver who is known for driving over his head, Speed lives up to his last name on the track, which is why he'll probably end up doing something squirrelly.

Trickskier, thanks for the pics!
Definitely glad I didn't spend the money to fly down like I was going to. Wanted to save the money for the "boat fund" and think I made a wise choice.

As for Jr., I'm a Jr. fan and agree that he needs to get his head out of his @ss. If his sign is so difficult to see, why not change the shape of it??? The 24 or 48 have a large oval sign. As for him being outside the pit box... it almost looked like his pit crew left a 1/2 second too early, which forced him to remain towards the outside of the box. As for the crash, they were both at fault. I suspect he wanted to give Vickers a little tap, but obviously not to cause a wreck. In the pre-race interviews he seemed really off and you could tell he wasn't going to have a good day. Oh well, at least Kyle wound up where he belongs!

Was really good to see Tony running well. He definitely had a top-three car.

In regards to the rain,
NASCAR obviously knew the rain was coming, I don't understand why they don't have 2-5 or 10 lap dash before they throw the yellow / red due to rain. With radar forecasting this should be able to determine who much longer it's going to be before the rain arrives, it's easy to do I've done it with a standard marine navigation radar. Anyway, at "X" time before the rain arrives an should reach into a "hat" and pull a number from 2 through 10. This number will become the number of laps that will be run before they throw a yellow / red to stop, or temporarily delay, the race. Announce this number to all of the teams and the fans will at least get to see a dash for cash finish.

I've written Robin Braig the President of Daytona International Speedway a letter about not starting the race earlier knowing that rain was on the way. FOX came on at 2 O'Clock so there is no reason they couldn't start the race earlier. NASCAR is just plain stubborn, it's their way or the highway! They have turned the Daytona 500 into a Hollywood production and the race is secondary.

I encourage everyone to write Robin Braig and complain about the rain shortened race. Someone from the speedway will call you back! Here's the adddress:

I respectfully disagree. If you have a good car, you should be up front or trying to get up front whether there are 100 laps to go or 2 laps to go. That's RACING. If you're going to hang back and think you'll just cruise until the last few laps, you get what you deserve if they throw the red. Besides, I'm sure the crew chiefs/drivers knew where the rain was just as well as NASCAR did. If they didn't know, they should have.

IMHO since they've gone to the new car and have repaved a few of the tracks. (excluding Talladega and Atlanta) NASCAR has really screwed things up. I've been to both the Charlotte races since 2003 and thinking the Coca-Cola 600 this year will be my last one. I've been to both the Charlotte races since 2003 and thinking the Coca-Cola 600 this year will be my last one. (I just want to play with my new camera at the race) I'm looking for that absolute perfect picture that I can blow up to a 24 x 36 or possibly bigger.

If you want some good seats for the 600 PM me. I have 4 on the Start/Finish line. :D

Trickskier, good idea wrt contacting Robin Braig!

Shepherd, I totally agree with you that drivers should be racing and not hanging back when they know rain is on the way, agruably all the time, but they obviously employ various strategies.

All I was suggesting was that there needs to be some non-arbitrary method to call a race. This will add excitement for the fans, both at the track and tv audience, in addition to making things more interesting for the drivers.

The issue that I see is that if NASCAR seemingly arbitrarily calls a race when driver "X" is out front and driver "Y" is making ground / charging for first, then driver "Y" fans are going to feel that the race was called to allow driver "X" to win. Substitute Busch, Jr, Stewart, Johnson, Gordon, Edwards, etc and/or even throw some "lesser" names into the mix for "X" and "Y" and I strongly suggest it would cause quite a bit of controversy. This happened at Pocono in 2007 when Ryan Newman was challenging Gordon for the lead in one of the turns when the race was called. Would have been a lot better to see them at least race to the start/finish line.
OR
If there was a call of "two laps to go" prior to waving the flag for rain, then the fans would likely leave the race feeling like there was an element of excitement that they saw a race to the finish, rather than a seemingly arbitrary call and witnessing a driver being told on pitroad that they won the race.

IMO, NASCAR went to crap with pit road speed limits, elimination of racing back to the yellow, roof flaps, and the green-white-checker rule. I'd also add restrictor plates, but they were already using them when I started watching the races.

A few pics from Sunday at the Auto Club 500. Great scenery with the recent storms. Great day with the RV out there at 6am. Not too much excitement in the race besides a few sprinkles. Kenseth had the fastest car, that's for sure. My boy Jimmie was fast early but fell off late.

Late pit stops first one, second one lined up before the race.

Not sure if this has ever been posted but with all of the losses at GM and the others why do you think Nascar is funded at this point. How much does each of these companies have to be responsible for during a season. i know the team owners pay alot but Chevy, Ford, and Dodge have to have alot invested as well. I think if I was about to file bankruptcy I would put a hold on rubbin wouldn't you?

This is not a nascar hate post. I have been to many races. i understand it is for the fans and they buy cars etc. But I don't think they are buying enough right now.

Brian Loftin, our 2008 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Champion was one of six Modified drivers to participate in testing at Bristol Motor Speedway Tuesday for the Modified race in August!
To start the day, all six cars employed the same restrictor plate that is used annually at the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s two events at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. In the morning session, Szegedy paced the field with a fast lap of 15.022 seconds (127.733 mph).
The afternoon session proved to be significantly faster for all involved as the temperature warmed. As of mid-afternoon, Miller topped the charts at 14.742 seconds (130.159 mph.) well under the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series track qualifying record of 14.908 seconds (128.709) set by Ryan Newman in 2003.
It's my understand from some Modified owners/drivers, they are going to have to run the Nextel/Nationwide/CampingWorld Truck Series 5 lug on 5" hub/rotor, spindle, bearing assembly on the right front after some troublesome wheel bearing problems during the day instead of the wide 5 style, there was too much stress and speed for them to handle.

April Fooled: NASCAR Hoax Causes Web Frenzy

by Claudine Zap April 1, 2009 03:05:41 PM

Sure, April Fools' Day (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=April+Fools%27+Day+&cs=bz&fr=buzz) comes but once a year, and some silly stories have been making the rounds. (Stairmasters in the NYC subway? Brad and Angelina married? Really? No.) But one thing is now clear: Keep the jokes away from NASCAR (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=NASCAR&cs=bz&fr=buzz).
All Car and Driver (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Car+and+Driver+&cs=bz&fr=buzz) magazine tried to do was drive a little levity into the auto industry bailout with a prank. The serious publication ran a joke story that announced that Obama had ordered Chevrolet and Dodge out of NASCAR if they wanted to keep their federal funds (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/01/obama-nascar-in-april-foo_n_181891.html). For a brief web-fueled moment, NASCAR fans had to imagine a future of cheering on Japanese cars. Or worse, French ones. The horror.
Immediately, the Internet went crazy, with searches on "obama nascar (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=obama+nascar&cs=bz&fr=buzz)" accelerating in Search and zooming across Twitter (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_nascar/2009/04/did-obama-tell-chevy-dodge-to-ditch-its-nascar-funding-.html). Although the story was clearly marked a hoax, Car and Driver eventually pulled the fake story (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_nascar/2009/04/did-obama-tell-chevy-dodge-to-ditch-its-nascar-funding-.html) and apologized for going "too far."
Not to worry, NASCAR fans: Nobody's pulling out of NASCAR. Yet. As Automobile magazine's blog (http://rumors.automobilemag.com/6502994/news/car-and-driver-chevrolet-and-dodge-ordered-out-of-nascar/index.html) noted nervously, "Let's just hope that the auto task force doesn't read this and get any ideas."

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. Supporting these race teams has got to be expensive as hell. NASCAR fans are some of the most brand-loyal customers out there, but I wonder if the increased sales offset the millions that each automaker is pouring into it. I guess it does. These guys aren't that stupid, are they?

Back to Victory Lane (http://www.nascar.com/2009/races/lapbylap/04/05/lap.by.lap.texas/index.html)

Jeff Gordon held off teammate Jimmie Johnson to win for the first time at Texas Motor Speedway. More to the point, he ended that 47-race winless skid. http://www.nascar.com/races/leaderboard/cup/race/

Keselowski wins at 'Dega (http://www.nascar.com/2009/races/lapbylap/04/25/lap.by.lap.talladega/index.html)

Lap 188 -- CHECKERED FLAG: Brad Keselowski wins the Aaron's 499 after he and Carl Edwards get together sending Edwards airborne into the catchfence and into Ryan Newman. On the cool-down lap, Edwards runs across the finish line to finish the race and Kyle Busch spins Brad Keselowski. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishes 2nd. On the cool-down lap, Carl Edwards runs (on his fee, not in the car) across the finish line to finish the race.

Brad Keselowski pushed Carl Edwards to the front in the final four laps, then dove inside for the victory as Edwards spun trying to block and was flipped.

Awesome finish! It was amazing how fast Kes and Edwards blew by everyone during the last laps. Freight train!

I'm glad Edwards took the blame for the wreck. Class act.

How about our local track, Bowman Gray Stadium is NASCAR's longest running weekly race track, where Richard Childress (RCR Racing), got his racing start, among others. Average weekly attendance averages above 10,000 for 16+ races a year, 1/4 mile, 2 degree (?) banked racetrack outside a football field, inside the stadium.

Not good for the injured spectators. A couple didn't walk away. They were reported to have been flown away for treatment. I have not heard many details, other than non- life threatening injuries.

Cousin Carl has some suggestions for new rules at Talladaga. Stay tuned....

Two were airlifted because of traffic. The worst injury appears to be a broken jaw.

trickskier is correct. I found a few more details:
Eight fans injured in Edwards wreck: Eight spectators suffered injuries at the end of the Aaron's 499 Sunday when the #99 Ford of Carl Edwards went airborne and slammed into the catchfence on the frontstretch. "None of the injuries are dangerous or life-threatening," said Dr. Bobby Lewis, medical director at Talladega Superspeedway. "It's mostly bumps and bruises with possible minor fractures." Two women were airlifted to an area hospital, but Lewis said that was for traffic concerns and not because of the severity of their injuries. "One has a lacerated lip and possible broken jaw," Lewis said. "The other person was not injured, but has unrelated medical problems." When the car hit the catchfence, pieces exploded off the car as catch fencing bent back severely, but did not break. "I'm not sure if it was pieces of car or pieces of debris from the fence that hurt the spectators," Lewis said.(ESPN)(4-26-2009)

Lucky!

It was a good race I am happy the fans are ok?? Broken jaw..Bummer, I thought Newman took the biggest hit with Edwards’s car hitting the windshield of Newman car??? That could have been bad……… I don’t get the outrage of some people saying NASCAR needs to change the racing at “Dega” before someone get hurt or killed??? Why??? it was the driver’s fault Edwards went down to block, it is 100% Edwards fault and NASCAR should look into that? And sit his A$$ out a race for reckless driving and this Howdy Doody smiley ….. LOOK JACK HOLE… you almost decapitated Newman and you sent some fans to the hospital and this is your quote after the race????

"style of racing," Edwards said. "I guess we'll do this until somebody gets killed and then we'll change it, but that's the way it is."
He blocked two times and if I remember right??? Blocking is how Earnhardt was killed???

Oh and get out of your car and run to the finish line?? LOOK JACK HOLE get out of your car and do what the officials ask you to do …………………….. What a jack a$$

So Trick how did you like the race?:D
