Won't Start, just a click...

Hello all,

Have a 1994 Mastercraft PS190 w/ Indmar 310hp FI. Motor will not crank, just gives a single "click" which sounds like the solenoid activating, but wont crank the motor.
I have replaced the battery, the starter solenoid, tested the Neutral Safety switch, to no avail, and the motor is neither frozen or vapor-locked. The ignition switch SEEMS to be working, but dont know what voltages should be present between the posts in both start and accessory.
Any ideas ?? Bad starter ? Bad ignition switch ? Bad circuit breaker ?? What are the things to test each for and the tell-tale signs of them being bad ??

if your skiing 6 @ 41 off, have someone else look at it , and work on that 43 pass!

Hammer.

Tap the starter w/ a hammer while some one turns the key..

i used the hammer trick on my brendella in college for one summer. ( too broke to change it out at the time) .to minimize the hammer swings i would leave the boat on all day.

could be a weak battery, too. I've had the same thing happen in cars before.

Since it only takes removing the wires and two bolts to get the starter off, do that and look at the shaft by rotating the starter gear. If you turn it one way, it shouldn't move. If you turn it the other way, it should climb up the shaft. If it won't turn at all, you know that it's frozen. If you want, take it to a starter/alternator rebuild shop. They can test it for you.

Thanks guys !! It ended up being just that the starter itself was corroded and dirty... cleaned it up and it fired right up.

and if i COULD ski 6 at 41 off, i'd PROBABLY have a NEW Mastercraft, dont ya think ?? 8p
