Transient ordered to pay $101M for setting fires.

Mon Nov 17, 11:20 pm ET
LOS ANGELES A homeless man has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison and ordered to pay more than $101 million for starting two fires, including one that burned more than 163,000 acres in California two years ago.
Fifty-year-old Steven Emory Butcher was convicted in February of starting blazes in the Los Padres National Forest in 2002 and 2006.
The 2006 fire raged for more than a month and cost more than $78 million to suppress. It injured 18 people, destroyed 11 structures and was the fifth-largest fire in California history, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The 2002 blaze burned 70 acres.

Something about this just doesn't make sense! Our judicial system hard at work?

Throw Road Rage,

>PORT ORCHARD, Wash.(AP) A 32-year-old man was booked and jailed for investigation of reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault on Friday after allegedly throwing a wrench at another vehicle on a highway.

The tool broke a vehicle's driver's-side window, showering glass inside the vehicle, and struck the driver in his left shoulder on State Highway 16. The man driving the vehicle wasn't injured.

The State Patrol said investigators were unable to determine the reason for the assault.

Witnesses traveling westbound on the highway told troopers the man had been passing vehicles and traveling at a high rate of speed when he threw the wrench "for no apparent reason."

The man was arrested at his house.

>LINCOLN, Neb.(AP) A driver who threw an axe at another motorist, wounding him, has been sentenced to 37 days in jail. The man, 51, was sentenced Friday in Lancaster County Court for third-degree assault and criminal mischief after pleading no contest to the charges.

Authorities said two vehicles were traveling near an intersection on June 13 and one cut in front of the other, prompting both vehicles to stop. The man threw a 3-foot axe through the other driver's passenger window, striking him in the ribs with the blunt end.

>Man nabbed after hitting girlfriend with sandwich.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A man faces a domestic battery charge after allegedly hitting his girlfriend with a sandwich as she was driving on Interstate 95 on Friday. Police said the 19-year-old man became angry and hit the woman in the arm and face with a sandwich, knocking her glasses off.

>City threatens blind woman over unpaid 1-cent bill.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. A 74-year-old blind woman was shocked when her daughter found a letter from the city saying a lien would be placed on her home unless she paid an overdue water bill.
The amount? 1 cent.
Eileen Wilbur told The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro the letter sent her blood pressure soaring, and pointed out that stamps cost 42 cents.
City Collector Debora Marcoccio said the letter was among 2,000 sent out. A computer automatically prints letters for accounts with an overdue balance, and they are not reviewed by staff before being mailed, she said.
The letter warned of a lien and a $48 penalty if the overdue bill is not paid by Dec. 10. The charge was from the previous fiscal year, which ran from July 2007 to July 2008.
"My question is, how come it wasn't paid when the (original) bills went out?" Marcoccio said.
Wilbur's daughter, Rose Brederson, who discovered the bill in her mother's mail, called the situation "ridiculous." But she said her mother, who has lived in the home since 1959, would likely end up paying the penny.

Dr. Pepper makes good on it's free soda promise!

LOS ANGELES(AP) Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality. The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.

"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.

Dr Pepper is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.

Chef dies after eating 'superhot' chilli for bet
An amateur chef died the day after eating a "superhot" chilli in a bet with his friend over who could make the hottest dish, an inquest heard.
Andrew Lee, 33, suffered heart failure the morning after he ate the chilli.
Toxicology tests are now being carried out to see if the fork lift truck driver suffered a fatal reaction to the dish or whether anything else contributed to his death.

Mr Lee, of Edlington, Doncaster was apparently in perfect health and had just passed a medical at work, the opening of the Doncaster hearing was told.

Cooking was one of his main interests and he went to his girlfriend Samantha Bailey's house to make a chilli.

His father John Lee told the inquest: "He had a bet with Samantha's brother who could make the hottest chilli then went back to her house to stay."

Mother-of-four Miss Bailey called the emergency services to her home nine days ago.

Police officers were called to the house after receiving reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest and Mr Lee was found lying on the floor.

Paramedics failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full post-mortem examination is underway and further inquiries are being carried out.

Deputy Doncaster coroner Fred Curtis granted a burial order and adjourned the inquest for further evidence.

Nude photo in phone left behind at McDonalds end up online.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.(AP) Here's some food for thought: If you have nude photos of your wife on your cell phone, hang onto it.

Phillip Sherman of Arkansas learned that lesson after he left his phone behind at a McDonald's restaurant and the photos ended up online. Now he and his wife, Tina, are suing the McDonald's Corp., the franchise owner and the store manager.

The suit was filed Friday and seeks a jury trial and $3 million in damages for suffering, embarrassment and the cost of having to move to a new home.

The suit says that Phillip Sherman left the phone the Fayetteville store in July and that employees promised to secure it until he returned.

Manager Aaron Brummley declined to comment, and other company officials didn't return messages.

SEDALIA, Mo. A hunter bagged a big buck on the second day of firearms season, but the kill caused him a lot of pain. Randy Goodman, 49, said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck on Nov. 19. Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life.
The buck rose up, knocked Goodman down and attacked him with his antlers in what the veteran hunter called "15 seconds of hell." The deer ran a short distance and went down, and died after Goodman fired two more shots.
Soon Goodman started feeling dizzy and noticed his vest was soaked in blood.
So he reached his truck and drove to a hospital, where he received seven staples in his scalp and was treated for a slight concussion and bruises.

Man accused of attacking his father with a Christmas tree.

PARRISH, Fla.(AP) Authorities say a west Florida man who lives with his parents has been arrested on a felony assault charge after he used a Christmas tree as a weapon to attack his father.

According to the Manatee County sheriff's report a 37-year-old man was arrested last week after he threw a 3-foot Christmas tree at his father. The tree missed, but the man then tried to use the steel base from the tree to strike his father.

His father and mother were able to grab his arms to prevent the attack. Deputies say the tree could have caused serious injuries because the metal base weighs about five pounds.

The man was charged with felony assault. He denied trying to strike his father.

Swedish researchers create body-swap illusion

Wed Dec 3, 2008 11:04am EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Researchers using closed-circuit televisions to create an illusion have made volunteers virtually swap bodies, even making women believe they were in a man's body and vice-versa.
The experiment, reported in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE on Tuesday, shows it is possible to manipulate the human mind to create the perception of having another body, the Swedish researchers said.
It helps explain how humans understand the limits of their own bodies, Valeria Petkova and Henrik Ehrsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm reported.
They set up a series of experiments aimed at fooling their volunteers, each an extension of a common illusion in which people can be fooled into thinking a rubber hand is their own.
For the illusion, the volunteer's real hand is concealed and stroked at the same time the visible rubber hand is. The brain will often trick the volunteer into truly feeling as if the rubber hand is his or her own hand.
Petkova and Ehrsson went further, using a closed-circuit camera to fool their volunteers into believing a rubber mannequin was in fact their own body -- and eventually, that another human being was.
"This effect is so robust that, while experiencing being in another person's body, a participant can face his or her biological body and shake hands with it without breaking the illusion," they wrote.
They started with a life-sized mannequin.
"Two closed-circuit television cameras were positioned on a male mannequin such that each recorded events from the position corresponding to one of the mannequin's eyes," they wrote.
"A set of head-mounted displays connected to the cameras was worn by the participants, and connected in such a way that the images from the left and right video cameras were presented on the left and right eye displays, respectively, providing a true stereoscopic image," they added.
"Participants were asked to tilt their heads downwards as if looking down at their bodies. Thus, the participants saw the mannequin's body where they expected to see their own."
As in the rubber hand illusion, the experimenters touched the volunteers' bodies at the same time as they touched the mannequin.
"...it was evident that the participants had felt the mannequin's body to be their own body," they wrote.
Finally, they tried a full body swap between two volunteers and it worked.
The illusion only goes so far. The researchers said they could not fool their volunteers into thinking they were a box, for example.

MAN ALLEGEDLY ATTACKS GIRLFRIEND WITH BURGER
VERO BEACH, Fla.(AP) A Vero Beach man faces a domestic violence charge after authorities said he assaulted his girlfriend with a cheeseburger. An Indian River County Sheriff's Office arrest report said a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend got into an argument as they sat in a car in front of their home.

The report said the man would not let the woman out of the vehicle, so she threw his drink out of the car. In response, the man allegedly grabbed her arm and smashed the cheeseburger into her face. The pair got out of the car, and authorities say the man again took the McDonald's sandwich and put it on her face.

The man was released on $1,000 bond Wednesday.

Do we see a trend here?

Calif. KFC workers in hot water over sink baths!

ANDERSON, Calif.(AP) Three employees of a Kentucky Fried Chicken have been suspended for bathing in a deep sink used to clean dishes. The prank was discovered after one of the young women posted photos on a social networking site of the trio posing and cavorting in the steaming water in their underwear and swim wear.

The photos were filed in a gallery called "KFC moments." Captions included "haha KFC showers!" and "haha we turned on the jets."

A manager of the fast-food restaurant said the three were reprimanded and suspended Tuesday. She said no manager was on duty when the photos were taken as the three had closed the restaurant for the night.

For Sale on Ebay, One Senate Seat

CHICAGO(AP) For sale: One Senate seat. Goes to the highest BLEEP-ing bidder. Seller's positive feedback rating: since Tuesday, just about zero.

Outraged by the arrest of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, more than a dozen people have put the state's vacant Senate seat up for bid on eBay.

The offers popped up on the Internet auction site after Blagojevich was accused Tuesday of trying to benefit financially from his power to appoint a Senate replacement to President-elect Barack Obama.

Daniel Finnegan, a student at the University of Georgia, said he started an auction because he's "extremely upset about what happened" and wants to voice his opinion.

Finnegan says he's glad others posted similar auctions so the accusations against Blagojevich don't go unnoticed.

University of Illinois student Matt Platino says he posted his entry to be funny, but also because he's upset with Blagojevich.

At least one seller carefully noted the ad was "not an offer for actual US Senate seat. ... For entertainment purposes only."

Another wound up with a similar disclaimer, but not before unloading on the gov: "OPEN YOUR CHECKBOOKS, OR PUT THE THUMBSCREWS ON SOMEONE TO GIVE A HIGH PAYING EXECUTIVE JOB TO AN ASSININE, GREEDY VINDICTIVE POL OR HIS WIFE."

And folks are bidding, some jokingly. One posting ("Used Illinois Senate seat, all wood and leather, willing to deal on this one! Please be advised I will be away from my office for a while..."), had 78 bids and was going for $99,999,999.00 Wednesday morning.

Kidnapping expert kidnapped in Mexico

USA Today

A kidnapping expert was kidnapped after he finished teaching a security seminar last week in northern Mexico, The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/16/world/americas/16mexico.html?_r=2&hp) reports.

The paper says a group of armed men grabbed Felix Batista, a 55-year-old consultant to ASI Global (http://www.asiglobalresponse.com/), outside a restaurant on Wednesday in Saltillo. "We have notified the FBI and Mexican authorities, and they are working on the case," Charlie LeBlanc, head of the security company that employs the former military officer, tells AP (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/L/LT_MEXICO_AMERICAN_KIDNAPPED?SITE=TXDAM&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT). "What we are doing is we're offering our support to the family and hoping for the best."

The Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-fg-mexicokidnap16-2008dec16,0,3498794.story) says Batista was "on personal business and not on assignment for the company." The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/15/AR2008121503147.html) says "he has resolved almost 100 kidnapping cases in Latin America."

Here's a recent PowerPoint presentation that the U.S.-based consultant prepared on "kidnap for ransom," or K&R in security-speak.

Anyone from Canada see this

It came from outer space: Fireball streaks across Canadian Prairie, crashes

The Canadian Prairie is still buzzing about a giant fireball that roared across the sky last night and slammed into the earth with a bright flash. Witnesses described the fireball as red, green, white or blue.Aliens? Not so far, anyway. Just a meteor.

"It's a massive fireball; it's one of the brightest that we've seen in the area. And it almost certainly dropped meteorites," Dr. Christopher Herd, a University of Alberta earth and atmospheric sciences professor, told CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/11/21/meteor-close.html). "It looks somewhere around the Alberta-Saskatchewan border."
The Edmonton Sun (http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Edmonton/2008/11/21/7494091.html) reports that fragments may have landed in central Saskatchewan. Scientists have begun searching and reviewing footage from Web cams
See for yourself in this video from the dashboard camera of an Edmonton, Alberta, police car:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_2aX-784sw

Check out other video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0jQecO1jgY&feature=related) and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sZV4E***uk&feature=related).
The fireball was spotted around 5:30 p.m. MT (7:30 p.m. ET) and was seen in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, western Ontario and even North Dakota.

"It seemed like fireworks or a missile coming down. The sky lit up greenish and yellow," said Shawn Mitchler, who was pumping gas in Radisson, about 40 miles northwest of Saskatoon. "My heart just started racing because I didn't know what it was."

Despite its size and the noise it made entering the atmosphere, the meteor was probably no bigger than a grapefruit, Edmonton space educator Randy Atwood told CTV Calgary (http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20081121/CGY_fireball_alberta_081121/20081121/?hub=CalgaryHome). The meteor may have broken into small pieces before hitting the ground, or it may have burned up entirely before touching down.

"It was a beautiful show, and some people might have thought it was just over the hill, and that it was the size of a house," he said.

Fart Gene Isolated. Now, That's A Breakthough! | Weird Facts (http://weirdfactshere.blogspot.com/2008/06/fart-gene-isolated-now-thats.html)

Weird facts -
Kiwi geneticists have made a breakthrough in the plan to cut methane emissions from livestock.

"Our agricultural research organisation just last week was able to map the genome. . . that causes methane in ruminant animals and we believe we can vaccinate against (that)," Phil Goff told a conference in Paris.

Scientists in New Zealand are working on other ways to reduce emissions from agriculture, such as changing the way fertilisers are used on pasture land, he said.

Goff was talking about New Zealand's approach to emissions trading systems, one of the main instruments being introduced by developed countries to counter global warming.

New Zealand plans to include methane and nitrous oxide as well as carbon dioxide in its emissions trading scheme which is due to be launched in July.

According to a police report released Monday, the 20-year-old man threw the sandwich at his girlfriend's face during an argument about auto insurance and then hit her head with his fist.
The man admitted to throwing the food but not hitting her. He was arrested Friday and faces a battery charge.
Last month, another man was arrested on a battery charge for hitting his girlfriend with a sandwich, knocking her glasses off and nearly causing a traffic crash.
Police reports did not what type of sandwich was used in either attack.

AP) A man killed in a car crash was left in the vehicle, which was towed to an impound lot where family members discovered his body two days later, police said.

An officer who handled the crash failed to check the vehicle before it was towed, city Safety Director Martin Flask said. The police department is reviewing the case.

Emil Azzam, 50, of Lakewood, died instantly from head and neck injuries when his car crashed on Friday, the Cuyahoga County coroner ruled.

Azzam's car had apparently hit a retaining wall amid icy conditions on state Route 176 south of downtown. The car had heavy front-end damage.

The car was about 500 feet from a multi-vehicle accident and not part of the original call for service. Witnesses had described Azzam's car as an abandoned vehicle, police said.

Dennis Allen, co-owner of Parma Towing, said the company was asked to perform an emergency two so the road could be cleared. He wouldn't say if the driver looked in the car before it was towed or if it is the company's policy to look inside.

Azzam's family filed a missing person's report, traced his vehicle to the lot and found the body on Sunday. He was still holding a burned-out cigarette in his hand, his family said.

UNDATED Questions have been dogging Illinois ever since Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested last week on corruption charges. Now a California couple says the answer to all the state's woes may, in fact, be a dog. Their dog.
Michael Sunday and his family have launched an Internet campaign touting their 14-year-old border collie named Scuba as the next governor of the state.
Sunday wonders if Scuba who because she's deaf certainly wouldn't hear calls for her to step down wouldn't do any worse than Blagojevich.
Sunday really doesn't think Scuba has a shot. But the way he sees it Scuba who also has trouble seeing because of cataracts couldn't do any worse than Blagojevich.

ANKENY, Iowa Slush has never smelled so spicy. City crews in the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny are using garlic salt to melt snow and ice on streets from Tuesday's storm. The salt was donated by Tone Brothers Inc., a top spice producer headquartered in Ankeny.
Public Works Administrator Al Olson said the company donated 18,000 pounds of garlic salt to use on its 400 miles of roads.
Olson doesn't have details, but he said the salt would have ended up in the landfill, so the company donated it. A telephone call Wednesday to Tone Brothers wasn't immediately returned.
Olson said the city mixed the garlic salt with regular road salt and it works fine. He said some road workers say it makes them hungry, but Olson doesn't recommend it to spice up lunch or dinner.

Strickland was told by his doctors not to have the bullet removed unless it was pressing on any arteries or causing health problems. He does plan to see a neurosurgeon though because he wants it taken out if possible.
Police said Strickland was hit by a bullet Tuesday night from an attempted robbery outside a Walgreens store. A second person was also shot, several times, as he was leaving the store. Police said that person was listed in stable condition Wednesday.

Charges dropped against pallbearer hit by Taser

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Charges have been dropped against a man who was subdued with a Taser at his father's funeral.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported Thursday that the woman who took out a warrant against Gladwyn Taft Russ III did not appear in court on Monday. Glenda L. Sellars had taken out the warrant in August, claiming Russ had threatened to kill her. Assistant District Attorney Chris Flynn said there was no evidence except what Sellars had said.

Russ was a pallbearer and was loading his father's casket into a hearse last month when undercover deputies approached him. Relatives said two deputies dressed in coats and ties grabbed Russ and kneed him in his back before using a Taser on him.

Five sheriff's deputies were disciplined by New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey for their actions.

Hundreds of sets of women's underwear covered the freeway near the Waikele off-ramp at about 7 a.m, reported KITV in Honolulu.Bras in different colors and sizes and panties in every style covered a quarter mile stretch.State workers clearing the high-occupancy-vehicle lane maneuvered through the mess and motorists drove right over it.Where did they all come from? The items belonged to the Gap and at first check the store's manager thought the items were stolen. The manager said two weeks ago thieves got away with $4,000 in merchandise from one of the company's location.Upon further investigation, company officials discovered a morning shipment was short eight boxes. Several boxes apparently fell off the back of a Lynden International delivery truck.A delivery company spokesman said he is looking into the matter and is thankful nobody was injured.

Calif. Court: Would-be Good Samaritan can be sued.

By PAUL ELIAS, Associated Press Writer Paul Elias, Associated Press Writer Thu Dec 18, 6:22 pm ET
LOS ANGELES Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, the state's high court on Thursday said a would-be Good Samaritan accused of rendering her friend paraplegic by pulling her from a wrecked car "like a rag doll" can be sued.
California's Supreme Court ruled that the state's Good Samaritan law only protects people from liability if the are administering emergency medical care, and that Lisa Torti's attempted rescue of her friend didn't qualify.
Justice Carlos Moreno wrote for a unanimous court that a person is not obligated to come to someone's aid.
"If, however, a person elects to come to someone's aid, he or she has a duty to exercise due care," he wrote.
Torti had argued that she should still be protected from a lawsuit because she was giving "medical care" when she pulled her friend from a car wreck.
Alexandra Van Horn was in the front passenger seat of a car that slammed into a light pole at 45 mph on Nov. 1, 2004, according to her negligence lawsuit.
Torti was a passenger in a car that was following behind the vehicle and stopped after the crash. Torti said when she came across the wreck she feared the car was going to explode and pulled Van Horn out. Van Horn testified that Torti pulled her out of the wreckage "like a rag doll." Van Horn blamed her friend for her paralysis.
Whether Torti is ultimately liable is still to be determined, but Van Horn's lawsuit can go forward, the Supreme Court ruled.
Beverly Hills lawyer Robert Hutchinson, who represented Van Horn, said he's pleased with the ruling.

Illinois Health Department throws one sick Christmas party!

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill.(AP) Some health department workers in southern Illinois think they may have discovered some contaminated food _ at their own office Christmas gathering.

After the Lawrence County Health Department had a buffet for 72 people at a restaurant last week, 42 of the attendees suffered stomach problems, including the head of the department, Phyllis Wells.

"I'm telling you, it got me down. I about passed out and everything else," Wells said Monday. "It's not been funny. It's taken the punch out of my whole Christmas."

Wells says the cause of the outbreak hasn't been pinpointed. But she suspects the culprit was a norovirus _ something people get from contact with those infected, ingesting contaminated food or drink, or by touching contaminated items and then their mouths.

For now, Wells says the common denominator appears to be cold diced ham served in the salad bar.

"It may be that just a food handler was sick at the time and handled some of the food they prepped for the meal," she said. "Or maybe it was somebody who was sick who came to it and touched the handle and contaminated it."

Wells says it isn't lost on her that state health officials are now investigating a restaurant where food-inspection and other public health workers got sick.

"It's just my luck," she said, mustering a laugh. "Usually, it's our job to investigate other things. But us getting sick is ironic."

There was no answer Monday at the restaurant. Wells says it's her understanding the business hasn't reopened since the outbreak.

Elderly woman fights off naked invader!

PORTLAND, Ore. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said an 88-year-old woman fended off a naked intruder by grabbing the man's crotch and squeezing. Deputy Paul McRedmond said the man got into the house Tuesday through a sliding door. He backed the woman into her living room and pushed her face down onto a chair.
That's when the woman reached behind and squeezed. The man tore free and fled.
McRedmond said a county code enforcement officer who heard the police call on his radio spotted a car near the woman's house and passed on the license information to authorities.
Troutdale police arrested a 46-year-old man. He has been jailed on accusations of burglary, harassment and private indecency. Bail was set at $110,000.

Five inmates had already been moved from the Montague County jail to one in a nearby county this month after an FBI raid, said Jack McGaughey, district attorney for Montague, Clay and Archer counties.
McGaughey declined to say what prompted the investigation, also being conducted by the Texas Rangers. But he said authorities found contraband in the jail. New Sheriff Paul Cunningham moved the inmates to the Wise County jail on Thursday a few hours after he was sworn in.
McGaughey said some surveillance cameras' cords had been disconnected; recliners were in cells; some bathrooms and cells could be locked from the inside; and inmates had made partitions out of paper towels to block jailers' views inside their cells. One alarming discovery was a type of rack made of nails, he said.
"This action was taken because there was a concern for the safety of the prisoners and the jail personnel," McGaughey said Friday.
Some inmates had apparently used extension cords to lock deputies out, and unidentified pills were strewn about other jail cells, Dallas-Fort Worth television station WFAA reported.
No one has been arrested, but McGaughey plans to present evidence to a grand jury and said "a number of people" inmates as well as jailers could be indicte

Detroit lawyer gets 5-cent IRS bill, 4-cent refund!

(http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/ylocalnews;_ylt=Am84jVes1X0SK4u0zH5brFcuQE4F?ch=42 26712&cl=11356275&lang=en)

DETROIT James Howarth is a little confused by two letters he has received from the Internal Revenue Service.
The Detroit defense lawyer received one letter in November that said he owed the IRS money five cents.
He was warned that he should pay "to avoid additional penalty and/or interest," the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.
Howarth says he then received a second letter telling him the government owes him money four cents.
He was told he would have to request the refund since it's less than $1.
"When I owe them a nickel, I must pay them. It's not optional," he said. "But when they owe me, I have to ask for it."
Howarth says he's not sure if there is a connection between the two notices, or if the refund represents a recalculation of the original bill.
The perplexed lawyer says he called an IRS 800 telephone number but gave up after spending a long time on hold.
IRS spokesman Luis D. Garcia says the agency doesn't comment on individual accounts.

240,000 dollars awarded to man forced to cover Arab T-shirt

AFP/HO/File Tail of a JetBlue airliner. An airline passenger forced to cover his T-shirt because it displayed Arabic NEW YORK (AFP) An airline passenger forced to cover his T-shirt because it displayed Arabic script has been awarded 240,000 dollars in compensation, campaigners said Monday.
Raed Jarrar received the pay out on Friday from two US Transportation Security Authority officials and from JetBlue Airways following the August 2006 incident at New York's JFK Airport, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced.
"The outcome of this case is a victory for free speech and a blow to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling," said Aden Fine, a lawyer with ACLU.
Jarrar, a US resident, was apprehended as he waited to board a JetBlue flight from New York to Oakland, California, and told to remove his shirt, which had written on it in Arabic: "We will not be silent."
He was told other passengers felt uncomfortable because an Arabic-inscribed T-shirt in an airport was like "wearing a T-shirt at a bank stating, I am a robber,'" the ACLU said.
Jarrar eventually agreed to cover his shirt with another provided by JetBlue. He was allowed aboard but his seat was changed from the front to the back of the aircraft.

Tue Jan 6, 3:44 pm ET

WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. A 6-year-old Virginia boy who missed his bus tried to drive to school in his family's sedan and crashed. His parents were charged with child endangerment. State police said the boy suffered only minor injuries and authorities drove him to school after he was evaluated at a local hospital for a bump on his head. He arrived shortly after lunch, Sgt. Tom Cunningham said.
It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.
The boy, whose name wasn't released, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and drove nearly six miles toward school while his mother was asleep, police said.
He made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.
The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games.
"He was very intent on getting to school," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE."
His parents, Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26, and David Eugene Dodson, 40, are each charged with child endangerment, Wilkins said. Waltman is being held without bond. Dodson was released on a $5,000 bond.
It was not clear if they had attorneys.
The boy and his 4-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.
"This really is a story of miracles," Wilkins said. "The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway."

CA to issue IOUs instead of tax refunds http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/state&id=6587084

SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- California has been operating for 61 days without a new budget. State officials say California's financial situation is so serious that taxpayers may receive IOUs instead of refund checks on state taxes.
Hoping to get her state income tax refund as soon as possible, Akisha Marshall is getting a jump start on her filing. The single mom depends heavily on her refund.
"It's just like a job check," said Marshall.
Last year, 2.7 million people got their state refund in February, totaling $2 billion. But Marshall and other Californians may have to wait for their refund this year. The state will run out of cash next month. And it is at the point where the Controller will have to issue IOUs to pay the bills, including state tax refunds.
Story continues belowAdvertisement
"An IOU is a registered warrant issued on behalf of the state's treasury that lets the individual receiving the IOU know that they will receive their funds at a later date," said Jacob Roper, State Controller's Office.
Roper says the state does not know how much later those funds will come through.
State lawmakers recently came back from a long holiday break to continue budget negotiations. Republicans still don't want to raise taxes, and Democrats don't want deeper cuts to social programs. However, both agree that IOUs are a terrible option. The state issued them only once since the Great Depression.
"It's a horrible thing. It is morally irresponsible for us not to have an agreement," said Assemblywoman Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa).
"I think that that's a terrible prospect. Obviously, I don't want to see it," said Assemblyman Roger Niello (R-Sacramento).
Akisha Marshall doesn't want to see the IOUs happen either.
"My landlord isn't going to take it. The utility companies aren't going to take it. It just isn't good," said Marshall.
Taxpayers can't issue the state an IOU, so some may be wondering if an IOU is fair at all.
If the state has to issue IOUs, the money owed to you will earn interest. It's too early to tell what the rate would be, but it could go up to 5 percent.

Woman finds 139-year-old baseball card in box of antiques (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Woman-finds-139-year-old-baseball-card-in-box-of?urn=mlb,132871)

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_mlb_experts__17/ept_sports_mlb_experts-976110942-1231365231.jpg?ymwhrmADO6cLZ3mHThe strange story goes like this (http://deadspin.com/5125449/this-womans-baseball-card-collection-is-better-than-yours): Last summer, Bernice Gallego pulled an old baseball card from a box of antiques. She figured it might be worth something to someone, so she listed it on eBay.
The starting bid was $10.
But after getting a flurry of inquiries about whether the card was authentic or not, Gallego started to suspect she was holding something a little more valuable and immediately ended the auction.
Turns out her hunch was correct. She did have something more valuable. The card she found was made in 1869 and featured the "Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati," the sport's first professional team (http://www.1869reds.com/). It's considered one of the first baseball cards ever produced and its actual value could be worth more than $100,000 when she puts it back on eBay (with a higher starting price, of course).
Of course, the news that she had found a rare piece of early baseball history came as a shock to the 72-year-old Fresno, Calif., resident who said she's never been to a baseball game. Her tale, from unwitting discovery to learning about the card's history, is wonderfully captured by our old pal (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Fresno-says-forget-the-pen-banish-Barry-Zito-t?urn=mlb,79675)Mike Osegueda of the Fresno Bee. Click here to read it. (http://www.fresnobee.com/263/story/1101238.html)
From the Fresno Bee:
"When I came to meet her and she took it out of a sandwich Baggie and she was smoking a cigarette, I almost fainted," (collector Rick) Mirigian says.
"They've uncovered a piece of history that few people will ever be able to imagine or comprehend. And it comes out of Fresno," he says. "That card is history. It's like unearthing a Mona Lisa or a Picasso."
Gallego said she doesn't know exactly where the box of antiques came from since she and her husband are collectors and frequently buy lots from different estates around California. She does have a history of being lucky, though, having once won $250,000 on a slot machine.
(And with that, I'm off to see what I can find in my basement.)

Couple weds at Taco Bell!
NORMAL, Ill.(AP) Wedding bells meant Taco Bell for Paul and Caragh Brooks.

Customers inside the fast-food restaurant continued to order tacos and burritos as the couple sat Friday in an orange booth at Taco Bell and exchanged vows.

"It's appropriate," groom Paul Brooks said. "It's an offbeat relationship."

Employees displayed hot sauce packets labeled with the words "Will you marry me?" They decorated the restaurant with streamers and balloons.

The bride wore a $15 hot pink dress and the entire wedding cost about $200. Several dozen guests looked on as the couple's friend, Ryan Green of Normal, administered the vows while wearing a T-shirt. He was ordained online.

"This is the way to go _ there's no stress," said the groom's mother, Kathy Brooks.

Caragh Brooks, 21, of Australia, met Paul Brooks, 30, on an Internet dating Web site. They already had the same last name.

The couple wrote back and forth and talked on the phone for nine months before Caragh Brooks moved to the United States.

"We have the same brain, just in two bodies," Paul Brooks said. "We think alike in virtually every manner. We have the same interests, viewpoints."

He proposed on New Year's Eve and, because they like to spend time at the local Taco Bell, they decided to wed there.

"I would never have expected in my life in working here there would be a wedding," restaurant manager Carl Hamlow said.

You can't fire me, I'm drunk!

LIMA (Reuters) Peru's top court has ruled that workers cannot be fired for being drunk on the job, a decision that was criticized by the government on Wednesday for setting a dangerous precedent.
The Constitutional Tribunal ordered that Pablo Cayo be given his job back as a janitor for the municipality of Chorrillos, which fired him for being intoxicated at work.
The firing was excessive because even though Cayo was drunk, he did not offend or hurt anybody, Fernando Calle, one of the justices, said on Wednesday.
Calle said the court would not revise its decision, despite complaints from the government.
"It's not a good idea to relax rules at workplaces," said Labor Minister Jorge Villasante.
Celso Becerra, the administrative chief of Chorrillos, a suburb of Lima, denounced the ruling.
"We've fired four workers for showing up drunk, and two of them were drivers," he said. "How can we allow a drunk to work who might run somebody over?"

TOP 8 MORONS OF 2008

1.. WILL THE REAL DUMMY PLEASE STAND UP?
AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it's not Walter who's lacking intelligence.

2. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS.
Police in Oakland , CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, 'Please come out and give yourself up.'

3. WHAT WAS PLAN B???
An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidn apped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.

4. THE GETAWAY!
A man walked into a Topeka , Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him.

5. DID I SAY THAT???
Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: 'Give me all your money or I'll shoot', the man shouted, 'that's not what I said!'

6. ARE WE COMMUNICATING???
A man spoke frantically into the phone: 'My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart'. 'Is this her first child?' the doctor asked. 'No!' the man shouted, 'This is her husband!'

7. NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED!
In Modesto , CA , Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooo oo)!

8. THE GRAND FINALE!!!
Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thoroug h tops ide check revealed everything in perfect working condition The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard.
NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE.

Gun goes off in Utah restroom, shatters toilet!

CENTERVILLE, Utah(AP) The man escaped with a few cuts to his arm, but the toilet made out much worse. Police say a man's gun fell out of its holster while he pulled up his pants after using the bathroom at a Carl's Jr. restaurant Tuesday. The gun fired when it hit the floor and shattered the commode.

A few shards of porcelain cut the man's arm, and a woman in an adjacent restroom who was frightened by the noise reported she was having chest pain. Both people were checked at the scene and released.

Police say they confiscated the 26-year-old man's firearm while they review the incident. The man had a concealed weapons permit. No charges are being filed.

Guards angered aft6er stripper performs at jail!
MADRID, Spain(AP) A prison guards' union said a female stripper performed at a Spanish jail and authorities did nothing to stop it. The union says the woman took her clothes off before male inmates Jan. 2 and committed several lewd acts at the prison in Picassent in the eastern Valencia region.

An official with the Spanish Penitentiary System called it an inappropriate "musical performance" and said an investigation was trying to find out who authorized it.

The union called ACAIP reported the event in a complaint filed Jan. 8 with the prison system and reported Thursday in Spanish media.

The complaint said a female deputy warden witnessed the striptease in a recreation area and did not stop it. It says several female guards left the room in disgust.

Man found burned in apartment with no sign of fire!
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(AP) Investigators are baffled as to how a man suffered second- and third-degree burns inside his apartment _ even though the only sign of a fire was a candle in the bathroom. Knoxville Fire Department crews found the 56-year-old victim inside his apartment bathroom Monday afternoon with third-degree burns to his face and second-degree burns to his hands.

Officials say they knocked on the door of the unit at Cagle Terrace Apartments, and went inside when they heard someone moaning.

The man, who was not identified, was later taken to a burn center for treatment.

Fire officials say their investigation is ongoing.

Newspaper claims suspect transformed into a goat!

LAGOS, Nigeria One of Nigeria's biggest daily newspapers reported that police implicated a goat in an attempted automobile theft. In a front-page article on Friday, the Vanguard newspaper said that two men tried to steal a Mazda car two days earlier in Kwara State, with one suspect transforming himself into a goat as vigilantes cornered him.
The paper quoted police spokesman Tunde Mohammed as saying that while one suspect escaped, the other transformed into a goat as he was about to be apprehended.
The newspaper reported that police paraded the goat before journalists, and published a picture of the animal.
Police in the state couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
Belief in black magic is widespread in Nigeria, particularly in far-flung rural areas.

(http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/reuters/brand/SIG=pd7i95/*http://www.reuters.com) Goat detained over armed robbery!

LAGOS (Reuters) Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.
Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.
"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.
"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.
Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Man charged with driving with worker on the hood of his car.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.(AP) A man is facing assault charges after deputies said he hit a state transportation worker and continued driving several miles while the man clung to the hood of the car. Marin County prosecutors charged 73-year-old Peter Buchanan with assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving and hit-and-run driving Wednesday.

Authorities say Buchanan, an attorney, was returning to his office on Dec. 27 when he drove through a line of cones in Mill Valley and hit David Ramsey, a member of a Caltrans crew.

To avoid getting run over, authorities say Ramsey jumped on the hood of the Mercedes. But Buchanan allegedly continued driving, heading north on Highway 101 at speeds of 40 mph.

Authorities said Ramsey was able to jump off after two drivers blocked Buchanan's car when it exited the highway. Ramsey was not hurt.

By MICHAEL TARM, Associated Press Writer Michael Tarm, Associated Press Writer Sun Jan 25, 11:05 pm ET

CHICAGO A 14-year-old aspiring police officer donned a uniform, walked into a Chicago police station and managed to get an assignment patroling in a squad car for five hours before he was detected, police said Sunday.
The boy did not have a gun, never issued any tickets and didn't drive the squad car, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Dugan said.
Assistant Superintendent James Jackson said the ruse was discovered only after the boy's patrol with an actual officer ended Saturday. Officers noticed his uniform lacked a star that is part of the regulation uniform.
Police said they were investigating how the deception went undetected for so long in what they described as a serious security breach. Police said disciplinary steps are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police didn't identify the boy because of his age. He has been charged as a juvenile with impersonating an officer.
Dugan said the boy looks older than 14 and was motivated by a desire to be an officer, not malice or "ill intent."
The boy once took part in a Chicago program for youth interested in policing, so he would have been familiar with some procedures, perhaps helping him blend in, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

One in 5 men at risk of drinking problem.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - At least one in five men in developed countries are at risk of abusing or becoming dependent on alcohol during their lifetimes, U.S. researchers said on Sunday.

The risk is about half that for women, who have an 8 to 10 percent chance of becoming dependent on alcohol.

And despite the popular belief that nothing works, there is help in the form of several effective treatments, they said.

"This is a serious problem," Dr. Marc Schuckit of the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and the University of California said in a telephone interview.

He said men have roughly a 15 percent lifetime risk for alcohol abuse, and a 10 percent risk for alcohol dependence.

"Once you carry one of these diagnoses regularly, you tend to cut your life short by 10 to 15 years," he said.

His findings, published in the journal Lancet, are meant to guide doctors on how to spot and treat their patients for alcohol dependence disorder.

This includes a range of problem drinking behaviours such as spending too much time drinking, having trouble stopping once started, skipping important life events to drink or recover from a binge, and setting and exceeding a self-imposed limit on the number of drinks a person plans to consume.

The definition also includes more classic signs of alcohol addiction such as withdrawal.

They said repeated heavy drinking increases the risk of a temporary bout of depression by 40 percent. And 80 percent of people who are dependent on alcohol are regular smokers.

Some 40 to 60 percent of the risk of problem drinking can be explained by genes, and the rest by environmental factors, Schuckit said.

That may explain why women have a lower lifetime risk.

"This is a cultural issue. More women than men are lifelong abstainers. A higher proportion of women than men never open themselves to the possibility of alcoholism because they never or very rarely drink," Schuckit said.

He said heavy drinking raises the risk of heart disease and cancer, even in those who do not smoke.

And despite perceptions that treatments do not work, he said most patients with alcohol use disorders do well after treatment.

About 50 to 60 percent of men and women with alcohol dependence abstain or show substantial improvement in a year after treatment, which can include drugs such as Forest Laboratories Inc's Campral or acamprosate, naltrexone, also known as Revia and Depade, and disulfiramacamprosate or Antabuse.

Schuckit said these should be used in combination with therapy aimed at helping people change their behaviours.

MOTORIST FINED FOR DRIVING WITH HORSE ON BACK SEAT

Monday January 26,2009

THIS Fiat Uno gave traffic police a run for their money as it sped along the motorway with a horse on the back seat.

The driver had bought the foal at a livestock market near Warsaw, Poland and was driving the 150 miles to his farm in the north of the country.

By the time police caught up with the driver Hieronim Kapuscinski, he had pulled over to a lay-by when the car's engine conked out.

The pony waited patiently inside the car to be fed while the driver's two pals - who'd been crammed into the front - checked that the rear seat was secure on the ramshackle roof rack.

According to the Austrian Times, Police fined the driver 50 for inappropriate use of a car and confiscated the horse until the owner could arrange for a proper livestock transporter to pick it up.

Deputies: 2 Fake Officers Stopped Vehicles At Gunpoint
Victim Says He Was Kicked In Groin, Chest

POSTED: Monday, January 26, 2009
UPDATED: 2:13 pm EST January 26, 2009

LAKE MARY, Fla. -- Two men were arrested Sunday on allegations that they pretended to be police officers while holding five people at gunpoint whom they suspected drove through and damaged several Seminole County yards.

Lawrence Bentley, 47, and Joseph Coluccio, 64, both of Lake Mary, were arrested after the incident, which occurred on Wednesday.

According to Seminole County sheriff's deputies, Bentley and Coluccio said they heard a Ford Mustang they believed damaged the yards and followed it in Bentley's pickup.

Bentley called 911 as he was following the vehicle and said there was another pickup traveling with the Mustang.

The Mustang and the pickup entered the Shannon Downs subdivision in Lake Mary, so Bentley blocked the entrance, which also serves as the only exit, with his pickup, deputies said.

The passengers, four of whom are juveniles, said Bentley and Coluccio identified themselves as police officers and Coluccio pointed a handgun at the vehicles to get them to stop, according to the sheriff's office.

Coluccio is also accused of pointing his gun at the driver of the Mustang, then pulling him to the ground and kicking him in the groin and chest when he asked for his police identification.

Seminole County sheriff's deputies arrived, and the five people in the Mustang and pickup said Coluccio and Bentley claimed they were police officers. Bentley and Coluccio, who was armed with a .38-caliber handgun, denied the accusations, deputies said.

A review of the 911 call placed by Bentley revealed that he yelled "police officer" as they were stopping the vehicles, deputies said. Bentley also requested "backup" on a 911 call, deputies said.

After a further investigation, Bentley and Coluccio were arrested on multiple charges, including impersonating an officer and false imprisonment.

In this Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 file photo released by the Centerville Police Dept.shows a shattered toilet in the restroom a Carl's Jr. restaurant in Centerville, Utah A toilet that was the victim of an accidental gunshot was remembered fondly during a memorial ceremony.

John, a porcelain commode gunned down in an accidental shooting at a fast food restaurant's bathroom, has died. His age was not immediately known.
The toilet was shattered by a bullet Jan. 12 when a man's gun fell from its holster as he was pulling up his pants, police said. Police do not plan to file criminal charges in connection with the incident.
Christian Martinez, manager of the Carl's Jr. where John was gunned down, held a memorial service Friday at the restaurant. He gave away bottles of John's favorite toilet cleaner, Kaboom Bowl Blaster, to the eatery's first 50 patrons.
A Bountiful flower shop provided a large floral arrangement.
"In all my years, I can say without a doubt that I have never delivered for a toilet," said deliveryman Doug Graham, "but I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever heard. I got a kick out of it."
Remnants of John hit and cut the gun owner's arm, but he was not seriously injured.
Police blamed John's death on the gun and style of holster the man was using.
"He was survived by the men's urinal and wash sink," said Martinez. "He left us way too soon."

Girl dies after being trapped in washing machine!

Tue Feb 3, 11:54 pm ET
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. Authorities say a 4-year-old girl died after she climbed into a washing machine and her little brother switched it on.
Orange County sheriff's officials say Kayley Ishii apparently climbed into the front-loading washer Monday and her 15-month-old brother managed to start the device.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the machine's controls were 20 inches from the floor and the start switch was a simple push button.
The girl was in the water-filled, tumbling machine for at least two minutes before her mother found her. Her death was ruled accidental.
Investigators say the mother could not explain why Kayley climbed inside the machine.
Says Amormino: "They don't know if they were playing or what."

Prosecutors: Russian girl's killers ate body parts!

By IRINA TITOVA, Associated Press Writer Irina Titova, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 27 mins ago
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia Two young men one of them a butcher have been arrested on suspicion of killing a 16-year-old girl and eating parts of her body, Russian prosecutors said Wednesday.
The girl disappeared after leaving her home in St. Petersburg for school on Jan. 19, city prosecutor's spokesman Sergei Kapitonov said. He said she was killed that night, and that body parts believed to be hers were found in plastic bags scattered around the city.
Police arrested Yuri Mozhnov, a florist, and Maxim Golovatskikh, a street-market butcher and one-time psychiatric patient on Saturday, Kapitonov said.
The suspects, both 19, knew the victim, and she accompanied them voluntarily to an apartment rented by another acquaintance on the day she went missing, Kapitonov said. Prosecutors believe they drowned the girl in a bathtub.
"The arrestees said they ate the girl's body parts because they were hungry," Kapitonov said. They told investigators they baked some body parts with potatoes, he said.
They allegedly disposed of her bagged remains in garbage containers and bodies of water. Bags with body parts were found in at least two locations, he said. Both men are being held on suspicion of murder.
St. Petersburg news Web site fontanka.ru (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/ap/ap_on_re_eu/storytext/eu_russia_killing/30835093/SIG=10k6pp9l5/*http://fontanka.ru) cited a top city prosecutor, Andrei Lavrenko, as saying investigators believe the suspects decided to kill the victim after an argument erupted between her and Golovatskikh.
Moscow-based tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda on Wednesday cited a department head at the St. Petersburg forensic medicine office, Vitaly Sysoyev, as saying the body parts had not been positively identified as those of the girl, who he said was still officially listed as missing.
Kapitonov said he was unaware of that.
Lavrenko said investigators found traces of blood when they ripped out plumbing and floorboards in the apartment, fontanka.ru reported.
Mozhnov was convicted of robbery in 2005, Kapitonov said. He said Golovatskikh had been treated in the past at a psychiatric hospital.

60-year-old gives birth to twins?

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) A 60-year-old woman in the Western Canadian city of Calgary has given birth to twins after going to India for fertility treatments, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported on its website on Thursday.
The report said the twins, both boys, were seven weeks prematurely delivered by caesarean section. Though one is breathing with the help of special equipment, doctors said the twins are doing well but will be kept in hospital until they gain weight and both can breathe on their own.
The woman, originally from India, traveled back to that country for in vitro fertilization using donor eggs after being refused the treatment in Canada because of her age. The CBC said she had tried for years to get pregnant but had miscarried three times, even after surgery to correct a problem with her womb.
While unusual, a 60-year old woman giving birth is nowhere near a record. ABC News reported in July that a 72-year-old woman in India, who already had five grandchildren, gave birth to twins after in vitro fertilization, making her the world's oldest mother.
The CBC report said the Calgary woman's obstetrician thought it was a joke when she was referred to him before she showed up at his office. He is still questioning the implications of someone having children at an advanced age.
"I couldn't imagine if I was 65 having two five-year-olds running around crazily. The energy to do that is incredible," the CBC quoted the doctor as saying.

Sharpton calls for justice outside Madoff's home http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090207/us_nm/us_madoff_sharpton

NEW YORK (Reuters) Saying Bernard Madoff enjoys a "gilded penthouse incarceration," civil rights activist Al Sharpton led a rally outside the accused swindler's Manhattan home on Saturday urging equal justice for the rich and poor.
Sharpton and about 30 other demonstrators protested that Madoff was being allowed to remain free pending trial while poor people with no access to top legal representation languished in prison for relatively minor infractions.
"There must be one standard for all, and not one based on income," Sharpton said at the protest on Manhattan's affluent Upper East Side.
He added that Madoff was experiencing "a kind of gilded penthouse incarceration."
Madoff, 70, was arrested on December 11 in connection with what authorities have described as the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. In a Ponzi scheme, early investors are paid with money from new investors.
According to prosecutors, Madoff has confessed that his money management business was "one big lie" and had racked up losses of as much as $50 billion.
Madoff is under house arrest and 24-hour surveillance in his penthouse apartment as a condition of his $10 million bail agreement.
It was not known if he was home during the rally.

The great Atlantic Ocean swimming hoax (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/The-great-Atlantic-Ocean-swimming-hoax?urn=oly,140525)

It detailed American Jennifer Figge's accomplishment in becoming the first woman to swim across the Atlantic Ocean (http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ap-atlanticswim020809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns). Many (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,489704,00.html) media (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/more/02/07/figge.swims.atlantic.ap/index.html) outlets (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=3891711) (including Yahoo! (http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ap-atlanticswim020809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)) jumped on the story that seemed almost too good to be true. That's because it was.
The AP originally reported that Figge swam from the Cape Verde (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/cpv/) Islands off the coast of Africa to Trinidad (2,100 miles) in 25 days while escorted by a boat. She was said to have rested every night and hopped back in the water in the morning.
Figge woke most days around 7 a.m., eating pasta and baked potatoes while she and the crew assessed the weather. Her longest stint in the water was about eight hours, and her shortest was 21 minutes.
There were problems with the story from the start. A few of the less-important ones included the fact that Cape Verde is at least 2,400 miles, not 2,100, from Trinidad. And the African islands are about 500 miles off the western coast of the continent, meaning Figge had a huge head start on her trip across the Atlantic. (It'd be like somebody saying they ran across America after starting in Cincinnati.)
Those are trivial though. The real issue stemmed from the fact that swimming 2,100 miles in 25 days is impossible. (Some newspapers (http://www.suntimes.com/news/world/1421055,w-jennifer-figge-swim-atlantic-ocean020909.article) picked up on this.) It's infinitely more impossible when somebody only spends 21 minutes swimming during one of those 25 days. Michael Phelps swimming his fastest would take about 20 days to cover that distance. And that's his fastest pace, sustained for three weeks, without ever stopping. Impossible.
Yet, somehow, the AP ran the story even though a few seconds of thought and a pocket calculator was enough to disprove it. They ran a correction (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090211/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/cb_caribbean_trans_atlantic_swim_corrective) yesterday that read, in part:
Figge swam only a fraction of the 2,100-mile journey. The rest of the time, she rested on her crew's westward-sailing catamaran. Her spokesman [said] that her total swimming distance has not been calculated yet, but that due to ocean hazards including inclement weather, he estimates she swam about 250 miles.
Swimming 250 miles is nothing to scoff at; but it's not 2,100. To go back to the running-across-America analogy, this would be like driving cross country with a friend, and getting out of the car every ten miles to run one mile for the entire trip. That'd be an impressive feat, but nobody would ever confuse it with running across the United States (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/usa/).
In an interview yesterday with the AP (http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=207187&cl=11976818&ch=207399&src=sports), Figge avoids discussing the validity of her swim and instead says she "never intended to swim the Atlantic." That may be so, but she didn't do much to prevent most American news outlets from reporting that she did.

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die. This is so priceless, and so, so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today.!!!

Now some people are really stupid!!!!

A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank. Here is the exchange:

Family Member: 'I am calling to tell you she died in
January.'

Citibank: 'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.'

Family Member: 'Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.'

Citibank: 'Since it is two months past due, it already has been.'

Family Member: So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?'

Citibank: 'Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!'

Family Member: 'Do you think God will be mad at her?' (I really liked this part!!!!)

Citibank: 'Excuse me?'

Family Member: 'Did you just get what I was telling you - the part about her being dead?'

Citibank: 'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor.' (Duh!)

Supervisor gets on the phone:

Family Member: 'I'm calling to tell you, she died in January.'

Citibank : 'The account was never closed and late fees and charges still apply.' (This must be a phrase taught by the bank!)

Family Member: 'You mean you want to collect from her estate?'

Citibank: (Stammer) 'Are you her lawyer?'

Family Member: 'No, I'm her great nephew.' (Lawyer info given)

Citibank: 'Could you fax us a certificate of death?'

Family Member: 'Sure.' (Fax number is given )

After they get the fax:

Citibank: 'Our system just isn't setup for death. I don't know
what more I can do to help.'

Family Member: 'Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could
just keep billing her. I don't think she will care.'

Citibank: 'Well, the late fees and charges do still apply.'(What is wrong with these people?!?)

Family Member: 'Would you like her new billing address?'

Citibank: 'That might help.'

Family Member: ' Odessa Memorial Cemetery , Highway 129, Plot Number 69.'

Citibank: 'Sir, that's a cemetery!'

Family Member: 'What do you do with dead people on your planet???

Only reason it's in the bizarre news section is because it's the first time ever I've agreed with big Al

Sharpton calls for justice outside Madoff's home http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090207/us_nm/us_madoff_sharpton

It is not unusual for an alleged criminal to be free on bail while awaiting trial. The decision is based on many factors, including the likelihood that the accused will actually show up for trial.

And I disagree that rich people should accept less effective legal representation simply because poor people can't afford it. I bet Al Sharpton won't be going down to the local legal aid society for representation if he ever gets accused of a crime.

Similar to that, about month or two after my great grandmother died at the age of 91, the DMV sent her the paper work to renew her license through the mail.

We have this one going on here in San Francisco. This guy and his wife from SF were on Wife Swap. It aired a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night and I just happened to see it. Anyways, this guys behavior was not received well by fellow San Franciscans and someone posted their address on the internet. By Sunday night, two days later, I had read that these people had hired a private 24hr security company to post up outside their home. I have a project going on around the corner from the address, I drove by and sure enough! 24 hour security!

NEW DELHI (Reuters) A hardline Hindu organization, known for its opposition to "corrupting" Western food imports, is planning to launch a new soft drink made from cow's urine, often seen as sacred in parts of India.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or National Volunteer Corps, said the bovine beverage is undergoing laboratory tests for the next 2 to 3 months but did not give a specific date for its commercial release.
The flavor is not yet known, but the RSS said the liquid produced by Hinduism's revered holy cows is being mixed with products such as aloe vera and gooseberry to fight diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
Many Hindus consider cow urine to have medicinal properties and it is often drunk in religious festivals.
The organization, which aims to transform India's secular society and establish the supremacy of a Hindu majority, said it had not decided on a name or a price for the drink.
"Cow urine offers a cure for around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes. All are curable by cow urine," Om Prakash, the head of the RSS Cow Protection Department, told Reuters by phone.
Prakash, who is based in Hardwar, one of four holy Hindu cities on the river Ganges where the world's largest religious gathering takes place, said the product will be sold nationwide but did not rule out international success.
"It is useful for the whole country and the world as well. It will be done through shops and through corporates," he said.
The Hindu group has campaigned against foreign imports such as Pepsi and Coca Cola in the past, which it sees as a corrupting influence and a tool of Western imperialism.
The RSS was temporarily banned after a Hindu mob tore down a mosque in 1992 which lead to bloody religious riots.
The Shiv Sena, a hardline Hindu political party also known for attacking what it sees as threats to Indian culture such as Valentine's Day, started a similar initiative last year to appeal to its powerbase in Mumbai.
To promote the food of the native Marathi culture, the Shiv Sena said it was "making a chain like McDonalds" to sell a popular local fried snack.

Well, I would like to share this with you.
Yesterday I went to throw out an empty Reynolds foil box and for some reason I turned it and looked at the end of the box and written on the end it read:Press here to lock end.
Right there on the end of the box is a tab to lock the roll in place.
How long has this little locking tab been there?
I then looked at a generic brand of aluminum foil and it had one, too.
I then looked at a box of Saran wrap and it had one too!
I can't count the number of times the Saran wrap roll has jumped out when I was trying to cover something up.

I'm sharing this with my friends. I hope I'm not the only person who didn't know about this.
