I know... I Know! It is the code name given to the Caddy Northstar engine that Indmar marinized for MasterCraft a few years ago. The designation DD7 does have a significance to those that were involved in the project. I could tell you but then the secret would be out. We need to have a fer good guesses before the real answer is revealed.

Actually Jeff a friend of mine here in town works for Cummins (marine side) and they did do some testing putting a diesel in a MC. They just couldn't get the performance versuses cost at an acceptable level so gave up on it. They put a big Cummins diesel in a pink PS 190. They called it the Barbie Boat.

Okay, what is the answer?

The Northstar project needed to be completed by July 1 for inclusion the new model year MasterCraft boats. It had a "Drop Dead" date of July ... DD-7. Funny how internal code names seem to stick with a product.

Maybe you can answer this one too, Engine Nut? I heard from another that purchased this option, that this was a $10,000 hit? Any truth to it?

I am not sure of the actual upcharge because pricing of the entire boat is MasterCraft's baby. I do know that the Northstar engine was significantly more expensive than the 5.7. The engine itself was quite costly from GM and all new exhust manifolds etc. had to be designed and of course it was a very low volume engine.

It was a great engine. Very smooth, very linear acceleration but even with all the good stuff, it didn't perform as well as the less expensive 5.7L.

Wow....Engine Nut is trying to compete with JimN with his engine knowledge. I bet he has some insider info.

Not to mention that at the time that engine was only a transverse (FWD) installation so there had to be significant engineering that went into the front and back ends. Now it's got all the goodies (even pressure!) so it would compete with the 5.7 in every way except cost...

Any idea how many were sold?

Not many were sold ... probably way less than 50. One pops up once in a while but not too often. The ones that are out there seem to be running just fine.

Sure not trying to compete with JimN or anybody for that matter. Just trying to provide accurate and useful information when I can.

Less than 50 you think..Very cool..I have owned 3 different boats..this one, so far, has been the best running boat of them..Very good looking engine when you open the hatch too...

Anyone know how hard it would be to change the hatch, upgrade it to the new style, hatch for motor, then 2 seperate hatches to open from the side?

Hatches to open from the side??

jletoo
06-22-2005, 06:12 PM
Hey ryan,

You know, mine now is one hatch, opens front to back, via an electric motor, push the button, newer models, have one that opens front to back in the middle, and the two on the sides open from the middle out, so you could stand on the swimstep and have access to the storage areas

Hah! I get it. I had a Direct Drive moment. I don't know why I keep thinking you have a PS 195. Now that I've seen pics maybe I'll remember. There must be another j_something in CA.

Since this thread is already hijaacked....

I've said for years now that one of my next mod's will be a clamshell engine box for my PS190. How does MC expect you to check your oil if you have anything in the boat? Seems like I always have to pull a ski or 2, rope, throw cushin, wetsuit out from under my box when I'm trying to close it.

That is my only complaint about my boat and one day it's going to be changed somehow (not sure how yet).

Ryan

Order an '04 engine box. They have the clam shell. I am not sure if they were sold in other years - I know someone on here mentioned that MC were afraid of fumes leaking out or something - who knows. I think it's a great idea. Anyone know how the proportions match up??

Ryan

Side view (different boat). I'd love to have one on my boat. I wonder how much they cost???
