It's a good theory, implementing that idea would be hell. Ask obama in a year if it's a good idea to run a campaign on sweeping change8p. All I'm sayin is Fred could talk about nat sales tax but please don't build a platform on it.

Don't paint with such a broad brush. I am not a sheep who votes simply along party lines like alot of this country. I vote for the best candidate and frankly this year I wasn't hot on either of them. I do know that rolling out a 70 year old candidate year after year is not going to work. McCain conceded the day he chose Palin and the fact that Republicans stood behind that ticket shows how myopic some people can be. Don't get me wrong the democrats would have done the same thing. It shows how broken and divisive the 2 party system has become.

Carpet pole into a mountain....hmmmm. Never thought of that one....better have a good seatbelt on the forklift for that. One of my professors always preferred a #2 hammer....or a sledge, whichever was closer. Next time I go by KSU I will run that one past him and see what he says. 8p

Funnier to listen to the denial of physics generally, and the laws of thermal dynamics specifically by people like Fred Thompson who would flunk a high school science class.

Could be worse, that dumb bag of rocks, Palin (who would have failed a primary school lesson on civics) could have gotten elected.

Not a dead issue in science or in the rest of the world...you will see over time.

Then again there are many scientists who claim that you cannot separate this global warming cycle from the natural change in earth's surface temperatures over time.

That being you can correlate O3 levels, or UV radiation, or Glacier recession vs. temps and make nice graphs. But we are well within the statistical "norm" of the earth (according to science)

Now does that means humans can survive w/in all those norms?

But as far as getting people to care about their CO2 footprint, the best way is typically through their wallet. High electric bills? Lights out. Gas too expensive? Drive less. Etc.

Heck I even go all the way and have all my chargers and computers plugged into surge bars so i can switch them off the power to everything fully when not in use (also gets rid of that annoying red glow... win win) But will that do anything in the grand scheme? Has the equilibrium already been shifted. Are humans shafted?

I for one, am glad not to live by the oceans.

A:Don't paint with such a broad brush. I am not a sheep who votes simply along party lines like a lot of this country. I vote for the best candidate and frankly this year I wasn't hot on either of them. B: It shows how broken and divisive the 2 party system has become.

A: I agree, I don't think there was a single truly electable candidate in either bunch. And I'm going back to the primaries. Was there a single candidate that you could read their political stance and go with 95% certainty, this person is worthy of the office of President (or drive a forklift - so its not offtopic).

Then when the primaries finished we ended up with a charismatic young (politically and years) senator who kept his head down by not voting in the IL senate or as a senator from IL. But was liberal and targeted the young vote. This in turn enraged the conservatives because it scares them. Not only is the candidate young, liberal, (and for some I'm sure black is on the list) but no one really knows where he stands on things. Hillary sure did a good job (in my opinion) questioning what Obama truly believed and voted for during the primaries. But I never got the feeling that he tells anything near the full truth about the tough questions in his past and what he really will try to do as President.

McCain on the other hand has his service record (military and politically) you can see how he votes, know who he's allied with, but he didn't have the charisma to be an exciting prospect, too moderate to be appeasing to the conservatives, but then running against such a liberal ticket that looked almost conservative enough. Add Palin who at least seems to shoot from the hip and it was at least a do-able vote, though I had doubts of his abilities to make it through 2 terms and quite frankly you have to think that way when you elect.

B: I feel that the biggest problem is that strong political individuals who might have beliefs closer to socialist, or libertarian, or the green party slide themselves under the blanket of either republican or democrats. They shift their political stance slightly on some issues and get a big boost in the poles. And for president if you really break down the various candidates in the primaries some of them would make a decent third party ticket. But since they don't we are where we started. And since a vote for a 3rd party is essentially a vote against your preferred candidate (that being if you would have voted Obama, but instead vote Nader that's one less for the win X 600K or whatever Nader took this time around). And I think we just took a step further away from the possibility of a 3rd party president any time soon due to the sheer $$$ Obama was able to spend. No 3rd party candidate can come close to the funds required to campaign on that scale.

Ric

I'm not sure this is necessarily true but I'm pretty sure campaigning with only public money is history. McCain did it, Obama said he would and changed his mind, knowing McCain wouldn't go back on this. Obama's campaign manager was a lot better and that group is a lot more savvy when it comes to reaching the masses.

It will never happen, but IMHO. Here is how the presidential and or senate races should run:
1) No TV ads (they are ALL negative these days anyway)
2) Give each presidential candidate 1 hour on TV per week. Let them talk about whatever they want, but once the hour is up the hour is up.
3) Have the debates with equal face time for each candidate (did anybody else notice the last debate? when Obama talked he had the whole screen when McCain talked he got a split screen so Obama could show off his facial expressions)
4) Stop letting candidates spend so much damn money (that money could be redistributed or shared;))
5) a)Take the media out of the equasion. If there is a soundbite or video on a particular candidate. they either show the whole segment or none at all. Then shut up. I don't want Katie Kouric or Harry Smith telling me their opinion on what was said
6) Let them travel wherever/ however they want to, but they must stop in all 50 states. Not just "battleground" or constituent states. (the us government can supply the travel)

The system of electing officials has become a battle of who has the most money and or who does the almighty media like the most instead of who is the better man for the job

I cant wait to get my $1000 rebate check from the windfall tax that Obama is going to put on Exon Mobile. When do you think it will come?

Well it's a 1000 year plan so look for a buck back after being taxed at a higher rate for about 1000 years.

When he buys your gasoline, pays your mortgage and sends your kids to college no questions asked!

I heard someone say that if the $700B bailout money was sent to homeowners who aren't bad credit risks, in the form of a $70K check, most of the country could pay off their mortgage. Then, assuming they can keep from buying everything is sight after the house is paid off, they could save the amount that had been used for the mortgage to save for their retirement.

I owe $67K on mine and that would suit me just fine. Apparently, a large chunk of the banks will be paying bonuses and salaries for execs with their first installment, which the gov't has apparently put the kaibosh on. Greedy bastiges!

Not quite. Outstanding mortgage debt in the U.S. was $10.5 trillion in 2007. Current estimates vary between $11 and $12 trillion and $700B would barely make a dent.

About $1.3 trillion is sub-prime.

6.4% popular vote margin isn't exactly wiping the floor but as I posted, if he ends up doing things that pizz off the country, he could lose in '12. HE's already considering changing his timeline for pulling out of Iraq and he said that the changes may not come in a year, they may not even come in one term. Won't be the first time he has flipped on something and it won't be the last. A candidate making campaign promises when they aren't privvy to all of the data is a good way to end up looking like a schmuck.

Now he has a responsibility to protect this nation. Just like his running mate said, he will be tested.

At least he has the support of the Iranian President. The same guy who was part of the assault on the US Embassy in Iran. You know, where United States Marines and civilians were killed during the assault and the survivors were held hostage.

Don't want to start a political thread for fear of removal so I'll post it here..

World History 101

For those of you who slept through World History 101 here is a condensed version. Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were:

1. The invention of beer, and
2. The invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer, and the beer to the man.

These facts formed the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals
2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men.

Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy and group hugs, the evolution of the Hollywood actor, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide all the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years, Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most liberal women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals.

Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, firemen, lumberjacks, construction workers, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing.. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America. They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today 's lesson in world history.

It should be noted that a liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers, and to more liberals...just to tick them off.
