Does the meltflake gelcoat repair as easily as the standard gelcoat by a professional? I do not currently have metalflake, just planning for the future.

Metalflake gelcoat repair is very difficult and it takes a very talented pro to get it right. Metalflake, unlike your standard straight color, has a bit of a random pattern to it(not really a pattern but you get the drift). To match that pattern would be pretty tough and would take a good bit of blending to get it right.
If you think you are going to be hitting objects that may scratch the gel, I'd avoid metalflake and look for a color that is easily matched and repaired...I have heard that white can be very difficult to match as well, believe it or not.

Exactly what I wanted to know. Scratch the metalflake idea.

yea but metal flake will give you the baddest looking boat on the water... don't hit stuff and have people talking about your ride for the rest of the year... mine has stayed in great condition just a couple VERY minor things w/ the graphic that were done by the POs...

and that picture doesn't even come close to doing it justice

I love the metalflake. I have not seen one color of Metalflake that I did not like.

What kind of repairs are you expecting?

I pick the colors for a boat that will be used by someone else for a while.........

I'm in the SE corner of AL, Dothan to be exact.

Your color scheme is exactly what I had in mind, except with black on the top.

no doubt it would be sweet... the only thing i'll caution you about black is that unless you keep the thing in a swimming pool it will spot like crazy... one of my riding buddys has a 08 moomba xlv that's blacked out... now granted its sharp as all get out its a beast to keep looking decent... it would be easier to keep a boat made out of a mirror clean than his... but MAN it looks good... see pics below... even on the top of his deck tho where you're talking about it would be a pain... the metalflake does hide a good bit of the scum but i'm thinking that you'd just have to keep the black waxed a few times a yr and wiped down everytime out of the water... i usually wipe mine about every 2 or 3 weeks... kyle wipes and spray waxes his about every other trip

Metal flake looks awesome (picture of mine is below) but have heard it's heard to repair (and heard that AFTER I got my boat). Got a chip in the back of mine due to a run in with an anchor that I am going to try to get repaired this winter - even so, I'd go metal flake again.

I love the metalflake. Here's my old 197: My new X14 is basically the same color scheme. The flake is one thing that sets the MC's apart from the rest of the crowd. I realize that if it gets damaged it is a more difficult repair, but that's the tradeoff I'm willing to accept.

Years ago, I had a metal flake Hydrostream. Long story short, it broke away from its' mooring and spent the better part of a week slamming on the rocks...it was a real mess, a large area was gouged right through to the foam.

A real pro fixed it, and it was an invisible repair. So it can be done. One thing the guy warned me about though was, that flake has essentially clear epoxy over it, and if there has been any fade to the boat, he wouldn't have been able match that. In that case, the repair would have stood out like crazy. Luckily, (well if you call having your new boat smashed on the rocks - lucky) my boat had no fade at all, so it turned out perfect.

It really is. Everwhere I go they complement it. I just wish they'd stop asking me "how fast does that go?" I actually liked the color of my 197 better which has the black deck. But it is way too easy to scratch the deck.

When it comes to repairs on metalflake, find a good bass boat repair shop. They have been using flake for years and know how to fix it.

Canadian or Navy?

I was seriously considering the Navyflake, but heard that it isn't that great looking. I really want to see it for myslef.

I like the lighter blue so I guess canadian. I saw a prostar all done in canadian blue metal flake posted here recently and it looked awesome. Agree though would have to see it in person.

Other colors I like is the protour red, navy blue, and fire red flake. I currently have viper red and it looks like a sports car.

being that i am probably one of MC biggest metal flake proponents...

can i buff out scratches w/ rubbing compound like regular gel?

short version... i got to the lake house late this weekend and they don't have a dock w/ a slip it's just a flat dock and i couldn't find all my fenders and since i had 2 i used the throw cushion which has a plastic buoy on the line... apparently at some point in the night the cushion fell and the buoy broke and the rough edges of the plastic made a lovely spot about half the size of your hand on the side... i about threw up... but nothing i can do now but try to fix it first myself then if it doesn't get it done then i'm gonna take it to a professional

It never seems to matter how hard you try, that boat cushion never works. I don't know how many times I have had to deal with dock rash when my attempt at using that dang cushion fails. Even worse to the metalflake. I am probably as obsessed as you. Good luck.

My last boat was metal flake. Really sharp looking! Most lighter scratches can be buffed out of the clear coat. Deeper ones into the flake can be impossible to match up, but I think that a repair that deep is going to be noticable on any colour. Sanding out deeper scratches through the clear can change the colour (brighten) the flake. Just try not to hit anything...

Right now I'm digging my black. ;)

i'm gonna baby it... there's a lot a gel between the scratch and the glass but if it starts looking too gnarly i'm gonna just take it to the local bass boat shop... my dealer won't touch flake that's not under warranty and i can't say i blame him

BELIEVE ME... i thought about it... i figure if anything i'll just get a custom graphic to cover the repaired place if i can't find anyone to correctly repair the scratches

Like you said, all you can do is try to buff it out. If it's down to the flake you'll have to get it repaired by a pro. Don't sweat it.

my main concern at this point is cost of that repair... as was the original concern... i know having a nice ride is already pricey enough and i should expect it to not be cheap when "crap" happens but i tend to pride myself on not making obvious errors in judgment and thinking ahead to prevent costly "crap" from happening

Reminds me of when I first started riding cruiser motorcycles. Spen a crap load on chrome...drop the bike...replace anything scratched (as a means to clear my concience, and not look like the turd that I was to drop it)...ride a while, drop the bike...replace stuff....

Expensive lessons, but I learned.

What exactly did you learn? Not to drop the bike or forget about the chrome?
