View Full Version : Can anyone guess what I didn't check?

OK, got on the water fairly early (compared to my latest launch times) and everything was going great for about 3 hours. Swimming and boarding went well, but as I was getting ready to pull a friend on a ski, the boat wouldn't start. Now is where I challenge the "seasoned MC owners" to as what went wrong, and what I forgot to check. Here are a couple of hints to help you figure it out.
I had full stereo (direct from battery and not thru the boat and with a single battery), but no bilge, blower or any guages. Starter would not kick or even try. I installed a depth finder the night before, so thinking that I had installed it improperly, we took the dash out to get to the new gauge as well as the ignition switch ( does anyone remember how much of a pain in the arse the dash is?). No luck in our search for the problem so at this point we just jumped the ignition switch to the battery and started it and drove back to the launch with loose dash in my lap (almost). Loaded onto trailer and got it home.
Now at home with boat in the driveway, and cold one in hand, the little light in my head(and a little dim at that) went off.
PROBLEM SOLVED!! TELL ME WHAT I FINALLY FOUND!! P.S. "88 Prostar............

Kill switch has been dis-connected since I've owned the boat for the past 3 years. Good guess, would you now like to use one of your life lines? LOL

Sometimes you have to jiggle the throttle so that the engine knows that it is in nuetral. I know it happens a lot on mine. thats my guess.

Throttle was not the problem either.. Another hint: I neglected to check the obvious. It was electrical, but not in the bow of the boat.....

Jimmauburn wins the beer!! ProStar190Fan comes in a close second (only if you ment the Circuit Breaker that Jimmbo mentioned and not the resets on the dash). I messed with the boat for an hour on the water and drew a blank. Sitting in my driveway, I decided to lift the engine cover and take a look. While checking my starter lead, I saw it!! Smacked me in the face like a wet towel!! Big white letters that said " CIRCUIT BREAKER" with an arrow that pointed down to it. Pushed the reset button and my blower motor started running. I felt like such an idiot!! Lost some good time on the water today.
I also changed my ground location for my depth finder in case that was the cause. I'll be back on the water on Monday, and I'll see if all is well. If not, I will be buying a new breaker. Thanx to those that played along, and cold ones owed to all... Scott

It's a lot easier to guess when some info is provided, like the year and model of boat, ALL of the accessories that have been added, etc.

When a breaker or fuse pops, it's not an indication that the fuse or breakers is bad, it means that you exceeded the capacity of the fuse or breaker.

You're killing the messenger and not reading the message.

You have not solved your problem. I don't think your circuit breaker needs to be replaced. It did it's job. You made changes to the wiring and now it tripped. That is your first clue in your guessing game. Go back and check all your connections for tightness and that you have not overloaded the circuit. If you don't you will be resetting it again.

One of the cables loose on the battery or fell off?
