it's for backlash from the ski rope. Most had nets to stop the handle from hitting the driver in the head....

Okay, it's function is to serve as a mounting point for a net to prevent a tournament boat driver (or any driver) from being struck with a recoiling handle.
Works better than a shock tube. Shock tubes eliminate some recoil, but are not fool proof and really do a better job of keeping the rope from wrapping around the driver's neck than they do at eliminating handle strikes.

It is MasterCrafts second attempt to get a boat that could compete in NASCAR.
Here is a photo of the first attempt.

No, No, No. It was Mastercraft's first dibble into the "mini-tower" market due to the ongoing skurfing scene!:D

They put them on the boat so that you can practice "doing the limbo" while in the boat. 8p
Truthfully, while they protect your head they are also a big pain to climb around.

Some good answers here on this thread but you guys are off base. The function of the safe-t-top is to create down force on the boat upon take off out of the hole. Sorta like a ricer wing that you see on the import cars.
Hope that helps,

We used a ski rope the first few trips out with the new boat. It is amazing for someone that's never skied much to see a handle coming 70' back right at your head. We had a few laughs and I caught the thing a few times before I got beaned. You would think the thing was tied to the drivers seat. When its on the tower hook it comes in head high. :D
Edit: sorry------------idiot.

Thanks for setting us straight Rich.
But why do import cars have a wing on the back of their car?????:confused:They are front wheel drive……. you don’t need down force in the back ??????????????:confused:

I wouldn't be surprised if more heads have hit one of those cross bars than would have been hit by a flying handle.

I knew if I started my thread with something dumb it would get my answer!! I wouldn't have even thought about the rope recoil...seems like it would be more of a PITA than it is worth? How many people actually use them? with the net?

Thats why it is ideal to have a Safe-T-Top on a 205. You can do both dips and pull-ups to get the most out of your upper body workout! :D

I have a picture somewhere of a 70's/80's Safe-T-Top w/ holes in the side, it was pretty cool.
It was funny one of the first times I skied behind the X9 and I fell and the handle hit my dad in the head, I just said "Wishing you had the old boat?"
Ditto what everyone said on here, idiot.

I thought that it was to create 'lift' on the boat. That would, in turn, reduce the amount of the boat in the water and make the wake smaller...

Actually it does create lift, but not for that. Its so the driver can simply flick the cigarette up in the air and it goes out instead of landing in the boat. Thats why you dont see them anymore, people stopped smoking as much....

personally I think it is a good idea. Just ask the oil pressure gauge in our 07 team boat. I've driven for guys on the team that have popped them back and I have caught them, so yeah it can happen.

As an owner of an '89 with the Safe T Top, I can attest that my head has hit it way more than a handle has hit my head! We bought the boat not really needing it, but the price & timing was right. It was cool (still is I think), but the only time it is now on the boat is when it is covered. The original MC cover that fits with the top on is still in good shape, and the cheap one I bought a few years ago (that fits the boat without the top) leaks like a sieve. Yeah, I'm too cheap to buy a nice new cover! Actually it's pretty easy to take on and off. It's just 3 nuts on each side under the gunnel (or whatever it's called) that it's mounted to.
It is a pain to get around the boat with it on, and even worse when the net was installed. I haven't even had the net on after the first year. I did have a handle hit the back of the boat once, but that is as close as I've come to getting hit. Ironically I'll probably get smacked with a handle sometime when the bar is on, as the net surely won't be on!:uglyhamme
