What are the differences between an 2001 190/197 and the current hull. Its my understanding that it's basically the same hull as the current but without the hook. How does the wake compare without the hook? Is the hook a necessity? I also hear talk about replacing the rudder. Is the cabin size the same?

I think it's similar, but not the same. As you mentioned, the newer ones have a hook on the transom. There may be other subtle differences. At one time, the hulls were symmetrical which could cause chine lock. The newer hulls are asymmetrical to prevent this. That's what was explained to my anyway. Someone will clarify this soon....

Seems like I remember reading that chine lock was a problem with the 1998 - 2000 hull. I don't remember ever reading that it was a problem on the 2001 and up.

It certainly can be. I know from experience.

I don't know about that asymetrical thing though....seems kind of far fetched since they don't know what direction you'll be turning.

boat looks pretty much the same. drawbacks of course is the non hook. even when added it is still not as good. ive skied two with the hull hook and it doesnt even compare to the 2002 and up. also the rear hatch is split down to the riser of the back rest, makes a great palce for the rope to get caught up.

So the 2002 with a hook and 06 rudder is on par with the 03 and up hulls?

the 2002 TT skis great. dont know if they are the same as they are now hull wise, but i dont imagine too much has changed.

The 2002 TT boats where the CURRENT 197 HULL. Only the TT boats had the current hull that year

Dr. Brainey FINALLY comes through w/ some valuable info...THANKS

Disregard the below, I just noticed "Only the TT boats had the current hull that year".

Thanks Jim.

So is a 2002 non-TT the same as the 2001?

Rodltg2 said that a hooked 2001 does not compare to the current hull. Is this the case for the 2002 non-TT as well?

the 2001 isnt that bad though. its a pain to drive with the T rudder . aside from that it skis well. i would just prefer to ski and drive a 2002 TT and up.

I've currently a 1997 190 which honestly is more than I'll ever need. I've a friend looking for a boat and he'll buy mine and mine only (he likes it and knows it and don't feel like looking) so if I want to sell it I can. I want a 190 (not a 197) and when looking in the used market there seems to be a lot of 2001 - 2002 190's with low hours, very clean, and decent price. Its hard to even find a 190 for the years 2003 up.

The asymmetrical info came from MYMC when I was talking with him in February. It has something to do with displacing the same amount of water on each side of center and the rudder not being able to turn the hull if that happens. I guess it was not a readily accepted phenomenon until Mr. Dorton experienced it personally. I'm not sure exactly what year boat(s) it happened with. I am probably not explaining it properly. I had other stuff on my mind that day like "how the heck am I ever going to pay for this boat?":D
