I bought my first boat this summer and have an oil question. My oil is low and I need to add about 2 quarts. My manual says I can use Quicksilver 4 Cycle Marine Engine Oil, or straight 40W SG or CD detergent oil. I can't find either of those anywhere. All I can find is 25W-40W marine oil (by various manufacturers), and 40W non-detergent motor oil. Is 25W-40W the standard marine oil? My manual is from 1996. Can I use the 25W-40W marine oil? I assume that I should not use the 40W non-detergent motor oil. Help!?!?!

Use Rotella-T diesel oil, it will meet all your requirements. You really need to do a complete oil change.

We have to be careful with some of these questions with so many unknowns and check their profiles for the boat they say they own. We don't want to turn a generic I/O with a Mercruiser 4 cyl./V6/V8 into a real ski/wakeboard boat do we!

Suggest you keep a close eye on the levels each day you use it since it was two quarts low it must be burning it.

My last boat was a Maxum, nice boats but wasn't doing what I needed.

The 2700 is huge, a little bigger that the PS 190.

Might be fun for wakesurfing :D

I'd just switch to the 25W40. Quicksilver (Mercury) has a synthetic version that should be suitable, although it's about $9 per quart. West Marine sells it. You could just add 2 quarts of that to what you already have, but it never hurts to do an oil and filter change.

The Rotella T or any of the other 15W40 diesel oils would also be suitable.

I would NOT use the non-detergent oil.

If you like being eaten by a prop on that I/O.

Non-detergent oil would be something you'd put in an old engine with out an oil filter, that way as much of the nastiness as possible settles out at the bottom of the pan and you eventually pull apart the bottom and and scrape that junk out of there.

Just curious, does anybody on here have any experience with motor oils? I'm lost, caue it's time to do the first 20 hour service on the old '89!:eek3::rolleyes::D

Maybe I should just sell it to keep from having to do it!
