Ok so I pull up to the Marina Friday. Forward, Reverse,Forward, Revrse ect ect slowly kid/guys lets the front of the boat bump the dock.......wife did not catch us because the guy was standing there like he was going to do his job........I say uhhhh thanks for catching us. He ties us up half/A$$ while I am putting bumpers out he goes to the back of the boat steps onto the back deck/gelcoat with his SHOES ON! He is stepping around back and forth trying to tie the back end up......I said hey man I will just tie it up myself. In a reasonable tone. So he starts to put gas in the boat steps back onto the boat again gelcoat/interior back deck turned around sits down on the side of the boat with his legs hanging off putting the gas in with the nozzle between his legs..............I am thinking this guy obviously is and idiot. I dont say anything to him at this point because I realize I need to get away from here as fast as before I kill this person. He then ask if need anything else. I request two bags of ice. He comes back toward the boat and from 10 feet away he "THROWS" two bags of frozen Ice into the floor of my boat. "CLUNK" CLUNK" Ok thats it. I yell dude chill out throwing the ice. I may have put another explitive in there I dont remember. He storms off thowing his hands up in the air I follow him straight to the counter and lit into him. "First of all you let my boat hit the dock, then you ground your tennis shoes into the gelcoat and interior of my boat twice and then throw frozen ice from 10 feet away into the bottom of the boat dont act like I have a bad attitude you better change yours!"

So needless to say I was Pi$$ed......... Needless to say he did not get a tip!

not a bit... i crawl peoples butts and they're like "dude come on... it's just a boat" i then usually go into my practiced method of directly explaining to them that a flat bottom is "just a boat" what they were standing in is my investment... then i usually go into a form of how i'm certain the next time my ride needs to be cleaned they'll be no where around to clean it up and i'd be thanking them when i was scrubbing their wal-mart feet or nasty flip flop mark off my seats... then i appologize for my inability to let my boat which cost more than they make in a year (true or not it's a good line to throw in there) go to crap like their vehicle that their daddy bought for them

the throwing the ice thing... i would have probably threw them back at him only the bag probably wouldn't have left my hand if you get my drift

Being a "gas dock boy" at the local marina/mc dealer I see stuff all the time. This dude shouldn't have his job. No matter what type of boat it is I take my shoes off if I need to enter the boat. I also try to be as curtiius as possible with the customer. I know half of our customers names so that helps big time. I've had a few boats hit the dock already cuz they don't have bumpers out when entering the dock.

Good you didint give him a tip. Bet he didn't make $85 bucks in tips in one day like me! Sorry you had such a bad experience.

The ice I completely understand! As far as tying up and fuel pumping... I have a bit different idea.

At our fuel dock, you cannot even think about docking until your fenders are out and your lines are ready. I think the fuel dock has gotten a decent amount of earfulls from boat owners for their method of helping out with docking, so the fuel dock will pretty much do nothing to assist you, other than allowing you to hand them a line and they will tie it up for you. Also, the thought of the fuel dock pumping fuel for me is a pretty foreign idea. Because if they are pumping, the accept liability if there is an overflow. The fuel dock will hand you the hose and feed you the line, but opening the fuel fill, inserting the gun and pulling the trigger is strictly the owners' responsibility.

I guess the good thing about living in California where the threat of fines and lawsuits run rampade, is that I will never have a dirty dock guy stepping on my boat, not catching my bow or pumping my fuel! :D

Sorry about your misfortune, Todd! Next time... just do it all yourself! Its physically more demanding, but everything gets done the way YOU like! :)

I don't think you overreacted at all! While I don't use a marina for gas everyday I have on numerous occassions on houseboat trips and even occassionally at our own lake, and for the most part, the guys at the pump are very respectful of us and our boat. It sounds like you ended up with a real jerk there and I would have reacted in a very similar fashion.

The only time someone pumped gas into my boat at a marina, the attendant asked if she could step onto the platform.

I would not have waited as long as you did. I would have said:

Hey there SPALDING.....

(He turns and looks cause all the stupid ones do)

Get your f foot off my boat before I put mine in your ***

You think I'm kidding? I ain't kidding. Don't touch my boat, period.

I had a guy grab the rear guide of my trailer, jump up on the fender step and take a look inside the boat while I was at the gas station earlier this summer and as I walked around the other side he began to lift his foot like he was going to board the boat. I said to this punk:

You get down now or I'll pull you down off my boat, you decide?

He jumped down and called me a jerk as I walked away. I started laughing. 8p

Honestly these guys usually are "hey how are you guys today" "What can I get you" they dont step on the boat just catch you tie up the cleat ect. I put the bumpers on typically before I get there. Generally they put a overflow ring on the nozzle which keeps from scratching the boat and catches any drips.

I dont mind them throwing the ice over into the boat from next to the boat after they crush it up but I am telling you this was like 8 pound bolders being catapulted into the floor. Heck they were still not broken up when I picked them up.

He was probably having a bad day, after all think of his environment. People drive up and demand things from him all day, its the hot sun, he is underpaid, and probably tired. I mean he can't get a better job because instead of doing his work in school, studying hard and getting a grant to college; he coasted and enjoyed getting by in the easy classes and playing with his friends all the time. That’s not his fault, the schools failed him. All I am saying is we are all a product of our environments, you should have asked him how that made him feel when he threw the ice and then given him extra money just for being upset at having to work, after all its our responsibility to take care of him in spite of his poor work ethic.

This reply was approved by the DNC. :D

I have a friend who owns a marina here. He had a guy pull into the fuel dock with his wife & kids in the boat. This guy was smashed drunk. Put the gas nozzle into the ROD HOLDERS and started filling! Nobody caught it until he had almost completely filled the bilge. Once the staff realized what he had done they shut down the pumps. All the time he was filling, the pump was set on automatic fill, and he was messing with his kid. He saw a gator swimming around the docks and THREW his kid in the water as he was laughing his a$$ off! Kids gets up on the dock, crying, runs to mom. Well about this time is when the staff realized that the gas was going into the bilge, not the gas tank. They shut down ALL the pumps and tell the guy to get out of the boat and don't start it until they pump all the gas out and make sure its all safe. Well, what do you think the idiot does? Turns the key and BLAM!Blows himself and the boat, along with the fuel docks , sky high! Ends up in the water with 3rd degree burns to 3/4 of his body. lays up in the burn unit for months, maybe even a year. Gets out, gets a lawyer, and you guessed it, sues my buddy for HIS stupidity! Case is still pending

When dealing with people who aren't part of my regular crew, i.e., not my wife, or who I'm otherwise not sure have the same standard of care for their own boat, toys, etc. as I do for mine is to decline most if not all offers of assistance. It's just easier this way. I know that I have a very specific way I like things to operate and most folks aren't going to do it like I like it. That way, if I have to react, I can at least be comfortable with the fact that I told the dude to keep his distance.

Typically, this has to do with the more technical side of things. I'm happy to have help wiping down or backing the trailer or ten other things that need to happen to get us skiing.

As for the gas situation, I'm fortunate to not have to buy gas on the water. For me, it's all self serve.

As for having to react, it's usually not more than a simple request that someone remove his shoes (or muddy shoes) and the knowledge that I'll be doing some scrubbing and cursing later.

If it had happen to me I think I would of held his head under the prop.

However, when fueling on the lake I always pump my own! NO excuse not to! I always tie my own boat up, unless with someone I know who can manage what you would think is a simple task. This just give me peace of mind!

Dude after I was done with the prop thing I'd tie what was left to the end of a ski rope and drag him around the lake so they know you mean business.

You in no way over reacted!
The only time in nearly 20 year with our MC, we have used a gas dock was at CSM '07 and '08 was @ Harbortowne Marina.
Once we approached the dock and parked like we had some sense, they asked what they could do to help, then we did the rest, no fenders, no ropes, Lynn just held the boat off the dock, they handed me the gas hose, I did the filling. Then I held the boat and Lynn went to pay for the gas, ice and other stuff, the dock guy/gal helped her bring it to the boat, crushed the bag on the pier, filled the cooler on the pier, took the empty bag to the garbage nearby. I gave a tip more for allowing us proceed w/o problems than the service. 4 guys in a Bu just behind us commented to each other about how we knew what we were doing, complimented us on the boat and our actions, asked questions about it and couldn't believe it was 19 years old, then proceeded to say they understood why it was so well kept.

i rarely let anyone "help-out" on our boat. it amazing to me that some people cant figure out out to work the swivel board racks after several instuctionals. i usually keep a close watch on everybody in the boat. they may mean well but too many times their methods of "helping out" include pulling harder or twisting harder. i do think yelling and screaming at someone does you more harm than it does the recipient. the best solution for me is to tell everyone what i am fixing to do and ask them to pay attention to how this particular cushion opens or how this board rack locks, etc. if they show interest i say, "come give it a try, i could use some help from time to time". as far as letting someone pump my gas.....never! the trick is to take control of the operation and give instuctions rather than let them have the liberty to help out as they see fit. good luck and keep a check on that blood pressure :-)

Hell no you didn't over react. Anyone who has been around boats knows not have shoes on period. To be stepping on the gel coat then the upholstery is completely unacceptable. I very rarely go to our marina for gas but when I do they ask permission to board and they remove remove their shoes, even when they are on the platform.
